TUESDAY'S CAMPAIGN ROUND-UP....Today's installment of campaign-related news items that wouldn't generate a post of their own, but may be of interest to political observers.

* After two campaign cycles as chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, New York's Chuck Schumer is stepping down. How much credit Schumer deserves is open to some question, but Democrats gained at least 13 seats during his tenure.

* Sen. Bob Menendez (D) of New Jersey will replace Schumer at the DSCC. Menendez served as the vice chair of the committee for the last two years.

* A few new polls have been released on the Senate runoff race in Georgia. A new Politico/InsiderAdvantage poll shows Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R) leading Jim Martin (D) by three (50% to 47%), while Public Policy Polling shows Chambliss up by six (52% to 46%), and a Mellman Group poll taken for the DSCC shows Chambliss' lead at two (48% to 46%).

* Speaking of the race in Georgia, Rudy Giuliani will campaign in support of Chambliss today, and Sarah Palin will speak at four rallies in Georgia on Monday.

* In case you thought the recount in Minnesota's Senate race couldn't get messier, consider the question of missing ballots.

OMG, they're sending in BOTH Rudy Giuliani AND Sarah Palin to campaign in Georgia?

Oh, please, please, Br'er Fox, whatever you do, DON'T throw us into that briar patch!

As a NY resident, I've not been a big fan of Schumer's positions. He was one of those who defended lower tax rates for hedge fund managers, for instance.

But he knew how to get people elected. The Sunday news conference in order to maximize airtime and visiting all electoral districts were great tatics. His absence on the DSCC will be missed.

What's Dick Cheney doing these days?

Agree with g. powell on Schumer's electoral effectiveness.

Another thing that will be missed about him is his prodigious fundraising ability. That man can snap his fingers and come up with a million bucks in campaign funds.

Does anyone know whether Menendez is anything more than your standard corrupt New Jersey hack?

Menendez is a standard NJ hack. By Garden State standards, he probably isn't that corrupt, but that's not saying a lot. The only thing I like about him is that he isn't a Republican. In fact, he's the kind of pol the Dems could do without.

Palin will go to the opening of an envelope, as they say.

She will campaign for anyone as much as they want because being in the spotlight is her reason for being.

Hope Obama's Ohio boys and girls can get out the vote even better than they did on the 4th. Maybe the Florida team can go to GA, too.

I don't know about Saxby-Sadie but I wouldn't want Simple Sarah anywhere near my campaign! Of course, she'd make a fine George Bush!

If Saxby Chambliss thinks George W. Bush and Rudy and Sarah are his kind of people then it's certain he wouldn't have much influence in the Senate and Georgia will just be waiting...waiting for a long long time for the Republican Party to regain their footing and to gain more seats in Congress. Before then Chambliss and the other Senate Republicans won't have much to do.
