WEDNESDAY'S CAMPAIGN ROUND-UP....Today's installment of campaign-related news items that wouldn't generate a post of their own, but may be of interest to political observers.

* John McCain made it official yesterday, holding a press conference to announce that he will seek re-election to the Senate in 2010.

* Obama probably won't head to down to Georgia personally to campaign for Jim Martin (D) in the state's Senate runoff contest.

* Al Franken experienced a setback this morning when a canvassing board rejected his lawyers' request on a review of thousands of rejected absentee ballots.

* Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) was a leading candidate to replace Barack Obama in the Senate, but he reportedly turned down the offer from Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D).

* Speaking of replacing senators, who should get Hillary Clinton's seat? Karl Meyer and Shareen Blair Brysac make the case today for Sen. Bill Clinton.

Bill Clinton as a Senator.

I highly doubt that the big dog would want to become a junior senator. Highly, highly unlikely.

Bill Clinton in the Senate?
Obama will never allow it.

John McCain made it official yesterday, holding a press conference to announce that he will seek re-election to the Senate in 2010.

I was only half listening to it, but I thought he said he would make a formal announcement when appropriate. It didn't seem to be the purpose, but I don't know what was.

Bill Clinton in the Senate? Why not? There's certainly precedent: John Quincy Adams, after losing the Presidency to Andrew Jackson, was elected to the House, where he was known as 'Old Man Eloquent,' and frequently spoke against slavery.

Besides, it would piss off the GOP nearly as much as the idea of HRC in the Supreme Court.

Worth noting - the only president before Clinton to get impeached - Andrew Johnson - was also elected as a Senator after his term in office, although he died very shortly into his term.

Oh, god, can we just have a break for five minutes from Bill Clinton? Seriously?

I know a lot of the overexposure comes from Clenis-obsessed wingers and the MSM. I know he gave a terrific speech at the convention and eventually campaigned loyally for Obama and now for Martin, making up for much of the damage his mouth did during the primaries. Some of the reasons why so many of us are sick of him are not his fault.

But the bottom line is that, his fault or not, a lot of us are fucking sick to death of this guy and of the idea that both Clintons must keep succeeding each other in various offices. Enough already.

I think it should be IMPERATIVE by now that all the BIG GUNS of the Dems go to Georgia nad support
Jim Martin - Obama needs all the help he can get from a SUPPORTIVE Senate in this economic crisis! He cannot afford a devisive Senate, one that squabbles over who said what when and where, one that compalins about having their feelings hurt and trying to do some grandstanding.
So, I would suggest we all call our Representatives and urge them to support Jim, and get the message out there, that OUR COUNTRY NEEDS AGREEMENT SUPPORT for Mr. Pbama, so he can do his job of pulling the hot coals out of the fire left by gwb.

Sometimes only a well-placed F-bomb will do...

I've thought for a while that (if I were revising the Constitution) former Presidents should be members of the Senate (whether ex-officio, or with full voting rights, I don't know). Of the current, recently deceased, and soon-to-be former presidents, there is really only one that doesn't have the gravitas to be there. (In fact, in my lifetime, the only other outlier would be Nixon, and some kind of official office for ex-presidents might have helped with some momentum to actually conclude the case against him, or otherwise resolve it in a more satisfactory way).

there's been some discussion here in illinois about whether blago (AKA "Official A" in the justice department's investigations) should replace obama w/ a real senator who'll run again in '10 or w/ a placeholder to leave the field open in '10.
the catch, as i see it, is that anybody that gets appointed now -- if they want to run again in 2010 -- will instantly be tagged as "rod's guy."

Au contraire, put him in the senate so he doesn't wind up as co-Secretary of State. Give the man something constructive to do, so he can't make trouble.
