OBAMA'S THANKSGIVING MESSAGE.... I noted yesterday that Barack Obama and his transition team, after seeing the markets reach new lows last Thursday, began a full-court press, emphasizing a new economic message/development every day since. It led, among other things, to three press conferences in three days.

I figured there wasn't too much the president-elect would do Thanksgiving, but lo and behold, the streak continued with a new Obama message this morning, recognizing the holiday, and at the same time, reminding Americans that our economic conditions will improve in time.

"Nearly 150 years ago, in one of the darkest years of our nation's history, President Abraham Lincoln set aside the last Thursday in November as a day of Thanksgiving," Obama said. "America was split by Civil War. But Lincoln said in his first Thanksgiving decree that difficult times made it even more appropriate for our blessings to be -- and I quote -- 'gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American people.'

"This week, the American people came together with families and friends to carry on this distinctly American tradition. We gave thanks for loved ones and for our lasting pride in our communities and our country. We took comfort in good memories while looking forward to the promise of change.

"But this Thanksgiving also takes place at a time of great trial for our people.

"Across the country, there were empty seats at the table, as brave Americans continue to serve in harm's way from the mountains of Afghanistan to the deserts of Iraq. We honor and give thanks for their sacrifice, and stand by the families who endure their absence with such dignity and resolve.

"At home, we face an economic crisis of historic proportions. More and more Americans are worried about losing a job or making their mortgage payment. Workers are wondering if next month's paycheck will pay next month's bills. Retirees are watching their savings disappear, and students are struggling with the cost of tuition.

"It's going to take bold and immediate action to confront this crisis. That's why I'm committed to forging a new beginning from the moment I take office as President of the United States. Earlier this week, I announced my economic team. This talented and dedicated group is already hard at work crafting an Economic Recovery Plan that will create or save 2.5 million new jobs, while making the investments we need to fuel long-term economic growth and stability.

"But this Thanksgiving, we are reminded that the renewal of our economy won't come from policies and plans alone -- it will take the hard work, innovation, service, and strength of the American people.

"I have seen this strength firsthand over many months -- in workers who are ready to power new industries, and farmers and scientists who can tap new sources of energy; in teachers who stay late after school, and parents who put in that extra hour reading to their kids; in young Americans enlisting in a time of war, seniors who volunteer their time, and service programs that bring hope to the hopeless.

"It is a testament to our national character that so many Americans took time out this Thanksgiving to help feed the hungry and care for the needy. On Wednesday, I visited a food bank at Saint Columbanus Parish in Chicago. There -- as in so many communities across America -- folks pitched in time and resources to give a lift to their neighbors in need. It is this spirit that binds us together as one American family -- the belief that we rise and fall as one people; that we want that American Dream not just for ourselves, but for each other.

"That's the spirit we must summon as we make a new beginning for our nation. Times are tough. There are difficult months ahead. But we can renew our nation the same way that we have in the many years since Lincoln's first Thanksgiving: by coming together to overcome adversity; by reaching for -- and working for -- new horizons of opportunity for all Americans.

"So this weekend -- with one heart, and one voice, the American people can give thanks that a new and brighter day is yet to come."

And thank you for your passion.

The photos and video of Obama at the grade school he spontaeously visited yesterday say it all. The joy and excitement from those little faces and outreached little hands bursting right through the screen. Obama is a godsend. On this Thanksgiving, I'm so grateful for him.

Happy Thanksgiving to you, Steve, and thanks for posting his message.

What a truly wonderful "change" it is to have a president (elect) like Mr. Obama!
Hope, indeed.

It's rare that exactly the right person ends up in the right place - how much different this would all be if McCain or Clinton were the president-elect.

Of course, we wouldn't be in this mess if the GOP hadn't staqed a coup 8 years ago, but at least the right things are happening now.

These are modern day fireside chats. Part of a very good big picture strateregy currently being executed by Obama and his advisors.

I dunno, I'm a little suspicious of this "complete sentences" and "paragraphs" thing. And did you notice how he started and ended with the Lincoln theme? Very organized, very "Other."

Are people really ready for this kind of radical change? Especially in a Time of War When America is Under Attack (TM)? Just what is he trying to accomplish, walking in and upsetting everything, especially when he's not even in office yet! Doesn't he know his place?

I certainly hope David Broder reminds him of just who he is and where his limits are.

The man (and team) is just brilliant. Bush is going to be lucky not to be flung from office. Ihear somebody outside with a leaf blower on T-day. I'm either going to beat him or invite him to dinner. Wow, Obama it the winner's ticket!

It certainly is rare for the right person to be in the right place at the right time, and is someone who also knows the right thing to say to not only capture the moment, but provide hope and inspiration for what's to come. And Obama says it so well.

The ever shrinking Bush grows ever smaller the more press conferences Obama holds. He is already almost invisible, but unfortunately we have to bear his simian-like face for another eight long weeks. Bush's legacy: the definition of lame duck.

Happy Thanksgiving to all. This one is truly happy because there is much to give thanks for.

Has anyone in our history ever been in Obama's position? Think about it - he finds himself having to calm and reassure the nation before he even takes office. In a very real sense, he is fulfilling at least some of the duties of the presidency. And I'm guessing there are at least a few areas in which he'd rather not be tipping his hand right now. It's one hell of a tightrope to walk. And so far, it's pretty damned impressive.

Posted by: Roddy McCorley on November 27, 2008 at 1:55 PM | PERMALINK

Perhaps it would be better, bleh, if you were to remind David Broder of just who HE is, and where HIS limits are. I fully expect either Broder himself, or another of his ideologically-deranged breed, to offer the following words within the week:

How dare Obama...?

Would that you, I, and everyone else "dare" just a portion that he has; would that any of us demonstrate the audacity to commit ourselves to the ultimate ideal, of voluntarily giving up a part of ourselves for the betterment of those less fortunate---a thought-process that clearly does not exist in the yammering mishmash of talking points, twisted words, cherry-picked commentaries, and outright lies hurled against the Republic and all its ideals by the communalized hate of the Right.

If we were, as a People, to dare such things, we might actually give "the hateful ones; the spiteful ones; the xenophobes and their demented ilk" the golden opportunity to experience for themselves what they boastfully wished upon the rest of us-----"eternal condemnation to the hinterlands of political power...."

Keep it in the Black Thursday

Man oh man...
All those Friday paydays...
All those $25 dollar donations to Camp Barack...
Oh yea I got my money's worth...
Every thin Roosevelt dime...
Maximized to the power of "O"...

Best investment I ever made.

So cut me a thick slab of that soya Turk-y roast please...
And a huge piece of organic sweet potato pie...

Amen...

Obama could quit tomorrow and he still would have accomplished more for the American people and the American spirit than George Bush has done in eight years. It is, despite all the problems we face, a truly great time to be alive, and for that we should all give thanks.

I am so glad Mr. Obama got elected. At least *NOW* we have a PRESIDENT! (as compared to the chimpy who has usurped the office, and is in hiding to do his dirty deeds, trying to throw more sticks into the spokes of the wheels that turn our country)
WHERE IS CHIMPY TODAY? Where are HIS speeches of comfort and caring in these trying times?

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYBODY!~ I know what/WHO *I* am thankful for...

That's what we've needed and need now: A President/-Elect, even, who knows he has to project that inspiring confident air to make the people trust the future. As a student of Jungian psychology and psychohistory, I know it is required to have a mantle of "divine Kingship" regardless of how the political system or elections work.

Barack Obama gives really good speeches. I think that I have liked every one that I have read or heard so far.

Happy Thanksgiving, Steve. And thanks for this post! Gotta tell you, I haven't felt this much hope in years... and we're in the middle of a financial crisis.

Posted by: purplehawk on November 27, 2008 at 4:47 PM | PERMALINK

Compare this with Mr. Bush's "speech" as he pardoned a couple of turkeys.

I believe that Mr. Obama could make even the "turkey pardoning" ceremony inspirational.

But frankly, I hope he discontinues it altogether.

Passion, compassion, intelligence, honesty, articulation, facts, and high-flown rhetoric. Had Bush made this speech he would be hailed a great orator. For Obama, it's just normal. We are right to give thanks for this man, and our fellows who made his election happen.

Happy Thanksgiving to all from an American ex-pat in New Zealand suffering serious turkey withdrawal. Cold turkey indeed. Gobble.

PS Go Lions!

Wow, he's a much better president than ... than ... Shit, what was his name...?

Huh? Bush? Who the hell is -? Oh, is he still the president?

Damn, I almost forgot.

;-)

Happy Last Thanksgiving with Dubya in Office!

OB said "Workers are wondering if next month's paycheck will pay next month's bills. "

Ha Ha, ...the lucky ones are.

I'd bet Most Workers are wondering if next month's paycheck will pay LAST month's bills.

Very droll, Bleh @ 1:29pm! Very, very good. Almost as good a snark - but not yet quite, but possibly, suspiciously like another esteemed poster at the highly respected, now bookshelved CarpetBagger's IFP. Are you thee?

>

Anywho - yes, how dare he indeed! Where is David Broder to tell us/President Obama what to think.

Retreating to sofa to sleep off the turkey I go, mumbling something about a color of a fruit, tangerine?!?! No, promengranate... nah - it was an ORANGE!

So much to give thanks for this day... Happy Turkey day to all.

The turkee Barack will be pardoning is ... Preznit George Bush! Yeah, let him crawl to Crawford, but please: don't forgive Joe Lieberman!

Can he dump the lapel pin trinket yet?

Posted by: paulo on November 27, 2008 at 11:34 PM | PERMALINK

Can we talk about more important things than Obama's lapel? That's so yesterday's conservative thinking.

For me this is a great holiday and a special thanks to all of you in this blog it is the best, and something new is in the air. A significant change is about to occur in our politics and culture. The great American experiment is going to have new leadership. With a new balance, a black man with a funny name has declared his job is to bring about change, and White America is giving him that chance.

But, here, a huge responsibility and new huge new pride for the black community that here is a chance to do better, if not, another chance maybe a long way off if Obama fails. Ladies and Gentlemen of America the Neo-Con Republicans realize this and hate to loose, and hate radio is on the rant displaying this. Mainstream Media is delicately behind them.

In that press conference where Obama formed the message where he is the person to fill the job of making change was pretty good, here, Obama, said with sharp direction, that it is his job to fulfill those ideals in change. That was a moment that cut through clutter, and without looking down at a script as Reagan did saying famously Gorbachev “tear down that wall”, here, Obama, standing alone delivering a simple yet so powerful ideal looking straight ahead at all of us that no matter who he works with it is he who makes that final decision for change. That’s his job. That was good.

That simple message took the toxic Mainstream Media off guard. In a masterful way Obama put that reporter in his place and showed America a wonderful thing. Obama displayed how he will not be manipulated. This is a very powerful moment and hopefully as Biden said Obama has a spin of steel.

For me, if Obama does not go after those perpetrators of profiteering in the last eight years they will slowly like controlled flesh eating piranhas destroy Obama slowly nibbling away for the next four years. Obama will need all the help he can get for this long time long controlled media is partnered with the few the rich the Jekyll Island group that was in place for all most a century without change. They are the Piranhas that eat away with incensement delicately with verbal and graphical contextual twisting that is directed to kill the concept of We the People.

Hannity made the comment once, “If you are going to fight the Media you will loose”. Fox, CNN, MSNBC are the Media; this cable medium is core to America’s problem. God willing, Obama maybe the one to initiate the change necessary that finally puts “We the People” as the foundation of this experiment and we all realize we are the leadership not the media.
