Tanta

"The blogger Tanta, an influential voice on the mortgage collapse, died Sunday morning in Columbus, Ohio.

Tanta, who wrote for Calculated Risk, a finance and economics blog, was a pseudonym for Doris Dungey, 47, who until recently had lived in Upper Marlboro, Md. The cause of death was ovarian cancer, her sister, Cathy Stickelmaier, said."

Tanta was someone that I always enjoyed reading, for her unique voice and especially for her wit and wisdom. There isn't anyone I can think of who combines her knowledge about the mortgage markets, the ability to write concisely, and a great sense of humor. She'll be missed.

Until today, I'd never heard of Doris Dungey. I knew her as Tanta, the witty, intelligent, mind-bogglingly-well-informed co-blogger at Calculated Risk, a well-regarded economics blog. I stumbled upon Calculated Risk when it first got started, and at one point I had read everything ever posted there. Before too long, the site attracted a stable of regular commenters that were way out of my league, including the early Tanta, so I quit posting.

Eventually Tanta's replies became Tanta's posts, and now Calculated Risk gets 75,000 visitors a day, with hundreds of replies to every post. Many thousands-- perhaps millions-- have been informed and entertained by her work. Amazingly, she achieved all this while recovering from cancer. And today the cancer finally took her from us.

Goodbye, Tanta. We are all in your debt. So to speak, of course...

She was smart and funny and could be trusted.
Having just seen Emma Thompson in Wit, this one hurts even more...

What a goddamn tragedy. I learned more from Tanta at CR than 99% of the bloggers I read daily.

I'm afraid to go to Calculated Risk now this morning....
