INTERNATIONAL MAN OF 'PEACE'?.... Mike Allen reported this morning, "Pastor Rick Warren will present President George W. Bush with the first International Medal of PEACE from the Global PEACE Coalition in recognition of his contribution to the fight against HIV/AIDS and other diseases."

I thought, "That can't be right." And in a way, the name of the award is a little misleading. Here's a press release from Rick Warren's office.

"No U.S. president or political leader has done more for global health than this Administration, which has raised the bar on America's role and responsibility for providing critical humanitarian assistance around the world," Warren said. "Over the past eight years, the President and Mrs. Bush have traveled the globe as they and their staffs have worked tirelessly to bring awareness and solutions to pandemics such as HIV/AIDS, and we are privileged to honor their efforts on World AIDS Day."

The "International Medal of PEACE" is given on behalf of the Global PEACE Coalition for outstanding contribution toward alleviating the five global giants recognized by the Coalition, including pandemic diseases, extreme poverty, illiteracy, self-centered leadership and spiritual emptiness. The Coalition is a network of churches, businesses and individuals cooperating together to solve humanitarian issues through the PEACE Plan, an effort to mobilize 1 billion Christians to Promote reconciliation, Equip servant leaders, Assist the poor, Care for the sick and Educate the next generation.

"PEACE" is an acronym. The "P" stands for "promoting reconciliation." Of course, Bush isn't good at this either, but it's at least slightly more plausible than giving him an award for promoting actual peace.

As Ezra noted, "There's no argument that Bush has done some genuine good in pushing America's HIV/AIDS policy forward, but giving Bush the International Medal of PEACE is like giving the Dalai Lama the International Medal of WAR. You can find a rationale, but it demonstrates a genuinely insufficient sensitivity to irony."

Kind of like PATRIOT Act was an acronym. We won't be done with these juvenile jackasses too soon.

May Jebus bless the 22% who still think Shrub is still an OK Guy

"it demonstrates a genuinely insufficient sensitivity to irony."

Southern Baptists have no understanding, let alone sensitivity, to irony.

That Bush's mindless pushing of the right's "abstinence-only" agenda, which has resulted in an INCREASE in HIV/AIDS in countries like Uganda - where the rate of infection was going down with accurate information and the promotion of condom use - is considered worthy of an award congratulating him for his efforts, boggles the mind.

Then one remembers that this is being given to an idiot by a Christian Right moron in honor of total stupidity, and it all makes perfect sense.

The folks at Minipax and Minitrue must be so proud.

I predict that George W. Bush will do great things for the cause of Peace . . . by leaving office on January 20, 2009.

Well, even assuming Georgieboy has a positive ledger when it comes to fighting AIDS, he is in the negative when it comes to fighting illiteracy, and there may not be a world leader who has exhibited more self-centered leadership than he has. Can they give him the award for one but take it away for the other two?

I can see a new McSweeney's list topic from this:

Award to GW Bush, or title of an Austin Powers Sequel?

Wouldn't the self-serving leadership caveat along with the number of Americans Bush policies have ushered into poverty nullify his nomination for such an award.

Let's not even start with the war-mongering that should disqualify one from a peace award.

Promote reconciliation, Equip servant leaders, Assist the poor, Care for the sick and Educate the next generation.

Forget the acronym; Smirky doesn't meet the qualifications on any one of those goals.

The crazy wingnuts can shower Bush with all the made-up, make believe awards they want. It still doesn't change the fact that he's the right hand of the Devil.

P = Pre-emptive warmongering
E = Eschewing peaceful negotiation with sovereign leaders
A = Actively promoting torture and recruiting terrorists for al Qaeda
C = Corporatist collaborator and a culture of corruption for Christ
E = Executive privilege as a means of avoiding accountability

This is one of a number of fancy plaques that will allow Bush to exchange an honest accounting of his life for the heroic and courageous landscape of what he imagines himself to be.

It is just another piece of denial.

If there is one thing that Bush could have used less of, are the vultures around him who have allowed this man to perpetuate his stupidity and arrogence unchecked while feeding off his blind blunderings, people as unapologetic and empty of compassion as he is.

I honestly believe that George W. Bush might have been a good man once.

Hey, Chrenson! My hat is off to you for that excellent acronym!

Good Ol' Boy George wasn't much on the Assisting the Poor front, either, although that shouldn't be misconstrued as casting aspersions on American generosity as a whole. Americans probably do more, without prodding, to help the world's poor than any country on the planet - a fact on which their president is eager to captalize.

As someone once said of another leader; "He must have loved the poor, because he made so many of them".

Rick Warren should be ashamed of himself.

Gee, if he wants it, I'll give him the grand Order of the Dumb $hit Award.

He's certainly earned it. And my congregation would love to give him the publicity.
