TUESDAY'S MINI-REPORT.... Today's edition of quick hits:

* If you haven't yet, don't forget to take a couple of minutes to complete the BlogAds reader survey.

* The Wall Street roller coaster continued its wild ride, with the Dow closing up 270 points (3.3%) today. The S&P and Nasdaq indexes were up by slightly higher percentages.

* New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson will be introduced tomorrow as Obama's choice to lead the Department of Commerce.

* GM says it needs $12 billion to stay in business.

* For Ford, it's $9 billion. (On a related note, Ford's CEO drove to D.C. from Detroit. Smart move.)

* If polls have any meaning at this point, Americans seem to approve of Hillary Clinton and Robert Gates joining Obama's cabinet.

* An independent, congressionally-mandated has concluded that "terrorists will most likely carry out an attack with biological, nuclear or other unconventional weapons somewhere in the world in the next five years unless the United States and its allies act urgently to prevent that."

* Biden really should try to stick to the script.

* The election may be over, but Virginia Republican Party Chairman Jeff Frederick is still a hack.

* There's apparently low turnout in Georgia's Senate runoff election today.

* The U.S. Mint is not at all pleased about those Obama coins that keep popping up on cable TV advertisements.

* The Sci Fi Channel has given the green light to "Caprica," a "Battlestar Galactica" prequel.

* Note to hunters: sometimes, a deer will fight back.

Anything to add? Consider this an open thread.

The U.S. Mint is not at all pleased about those Obama coins

He doesn't look like all those other presidents on the dollar?

What's wrong with what Biden ad-libbed?

Posted by: Glenn on December 2, 2008 at 5:44 PM | PERMALINK

Glenn asked What's wrong with what Biden ad-libbed?

Absolutely nothing.

It was actually kind of funny. He manages to play on how the media is ignoring him and continuing to give screen time to Palin. But the MSN has been talking it up as some type of 'gaffe' or something and it appears Steve has decided to jump on the bandwagon.

I think is another case of the media creating 'controversy' out of nothing.

Hunters should also keep in mind the Constitutional right to arm bears.

Makes it more sporting when the critters can return fire, don't you think?

Seems like overcompensating to me. He really doesn't have anything he could be doing more effectively in the four or so extra hours he would have if he flew commercial?

But if he is doing it he needs to be behind the wheel of a sub compact (ok he can trade off with his staff in the car). If you are going to go all the way go all the way.

I would also be interested to know how his staff are making the trip.

Ultimate act of hubris: he is driven in the largest SUV they make, his staff arrives on the corporate jet, he is flown back in that.

I did the survey, Steve. I didn't get the part about piercings and tattoos. Does that make me uncool?

inspired by MissMudd: I did the survey, Steve. I failed the part about piercings and tattoos. *sob* Does that mean your advertisers are gonna cut you off cause i'm too uncool?

ps

Hey, Steve, love your site and I'll complete the survey.

Wanted you to be alerted to a typo in the seventh bullet point, "congressionally-mandated concluded has concluded..."

Keep on.

Why does the survey ask what my dominant hand is? Are we trying to snuff out hemispheric bias?

Posted by: Frank on December 2, 2008 at 7:10 PM | PERMALINK

Oh, give Biden a break. It's a self-deprecating crack and it's relatively funny.

RE: Biden-Humor and laughter are what distinguish conservatives/Republicans from the rest of us.

Posted by: st john on December 2, 2008 at 7:35 PM | PERMALINK

What's not to like about a VP who's both smart and genuinely funny? I'm surprised Biden isn't yet taken seriously after his statement that Obama will be "tested quickly" proved so tragically accurate. When he talks, listen -- then laugh, then think.

And, Ford's CEO didn't even drive the company's nicest hybrid SUV to Washington, let alone its largest. That would be the Ford Excursion, a behemoth on an F250 truck chassis. Instead, he drove a Ford Escape, three sizes smaller and the budget model of the Mercury Mariner. About fourteen months ago we drove a Mariner hybrid 11,000 miles, ten states and two provinces in two weeks. We were tired, but not because of the car. One sweet and relatively inexpensive ride. But that was when it came sticker price, 0% interest and with a $2000 government rebate designed to stir interest in hybrids. It's now a six month wait if you can find one at all, and $2000 over the sticker.

Are you asking because you have piercings and tattoos or because you don't? :)

I'm ink and hole free, too, assuming the holes I put in my ears no longer work since it's been more than a decade since anything was in them.

I've never liked anything long enough to have it permanently emblazoned on my body, but I was mere hours away from getting a 'The Carpetbagger Report' branding when Steve announced the switch.

Boy, would I have felt silly! :)

Posted by: doubtful on December 2, 2008 at 7:57 PM | PERMALINK

I think it would have behooved Joe to stick to the script rather than play up the drama more. Not so much for Palin's sake, but for everyone else who was paying attention.
===========================================

But that said, I don't really think Palin would note or integrate ANY thing Biden would say or not say--much as she doesn't with anyone and everyone else.

For lack of a better metaphor, there is an impenetrable bubble around Palin--perhaps not un-like we find with other narcissists-- who truly aren't listening and further more-- feel that any actual listening might actually make them vulnerable.

As a fortieth birthday present to myself, I got my nose pierced. Wow did that hurt! The tat thing though never really appealed to me.

I did however consider having "CB" cut backwards into my cheek...

Posted by: MissMudd on December 2, 2008 at 8:09 PM | PERMALINK

Palin's comment's at the Governor meeting were not well enough critiqued or depicted by Olbermann--beyond attention seeking, they were so "SORE LOSER" and as such, incredibly pathetic in nature.

I really hope others will pick up on this aspect.

Talk about unbecoming to the extreme!!

Here was the President-Elect (by the way, did she not refer to him as such) and the V.P. Elect who were extending themselves in a bold and unusual attempt for diplomacy, conversation, connection...

And she chose to do nothing but whine like a self-righteous 13 year old!

Steve:

I made sure to add a comment about "The Carpetbagger" in the survey as well; mentioning you by name. Hopefully some other people took the time to give you a little plug as well.

Funny responses on the Tattoos and piercings as well as the left/right dominant issue.

Keep up the GREAT work. You must be the most prolific blogger there is... Of course I'm only counting bloggers that make sense, which excludes about 80% of the right wingers.

Tony Auth had an even smarter idea...

On the same topic:
Seems like overcompensating to me. He really doesn't have anything he could be doing more effectively in the four or so extra hours he would have if he flew commercial? Jeff F, @18:01

Flying commercial is no longer a time saver, unless it's a really long trip. First, you need to get to the airport; depending on where you're starting from, it can take an hour or more. Then, you have to show up at least an hour ahead of time (even for domestic flights), to make sure you make it through the security check (and, who knows? Maybe he discovers he's on the no-fly list?). Then you sit on tarmac for half an hour or more, while they're trying to fill in the plane and/or are waiting their turn (because they got knocked out of line due to bad weather, bad connections, etc, etc). Then the 90 minute flight (always assuming you can find one without layovers), then get yourself from the airport to where you need to be...

I'm in Lexington, VA. Took a flight, once, to Ithaca, NY (a lacemaking workshop). 11 hours, door to door. These days, I drive. Door to door, even with pee and lunch breaks, it's less than 10hrs. It also costs less than a quarter (even when gas was inching up) and I don't have to worry about the airlines loosing my equipment and making the whole trip pointless...

Jeff Frederick was a state delegate who served part of my county in the Virginia General Assembly before he got the GOP Virginia chairmanship. He's indeed a hack.

Posted by: pol on December 3, 2008 at 12:28 AM | PERMALINK

I, too, did the survey.

I got y'all covered on the tats and piercings (3 and 3 [two ears and an elsewhere]).

I didn't get the purpose of the question for demographics, but, what do I know?

Posted by: MsJoanne on December 3, 2008 at 12:47 AM | PERMALINK

Did anyone else read through some of the knuckle dragging commentariat at that US Mint announcement link? With followers like that, it's little wonder that the Republican brand continues to be in decline. The two clowns insisting that the colorized coin were being minted in tribute to "King Obama" at his behest, likened by the one to King George III, were particularly precious.

Anything to add? Consider this an open thread. Stay tuned. This is the real Bush. Here's hoping Gregory will make the most of this. Good advice. Newsflash: In fact, ironically, he saw the writing on the wall. This isn't it. We'll know more soon enough. One thing's for sure: the two sides will, once again, be playing by different rules. Anything to add? Consider this an open thread.

Something to keep an eye on..."A New Crisis Ready To Go"

The International Energy Agency reports that the Global oil producers are creating a new energy crisis which will spark a return to even higher gasoline pump prices than those experienced this year...

By pocketing their windfall profits and not investing those monies in planned investments for new refining and exploration projects the fossil fuel industry is creating a new future energy crisis when the demand for fuel returns as the economy stabilizes.

Speaking of the US Mint advisory on Obama coins, can we talk about those commemorative plate ads? Talk about laying it on with a trowel. "...his confident smile and kind eyes..." Hilarity.

In Utah in 1975 a hunter shot a buck and then stood over the animal when the vengeful beast reared it's head and hooked the man in the groin. The antler tip ripped open the man's ballsack and he bled to death before he made it back to his truck.
