IMPRESSING THE GOVERNORS.... What's that old Woody Allen line? "Ninety percent of life is just showing up"? Reading about Barack Obama's appearance at the annual meeting of the National Governor's Association, it seems he scored points for just showing up, but he did even more by knowing what he was talking about.

No one could remember a meeting quite like this.

President-elect Barack Obama met with the nation's governors Tuesday to hear their tales of economic pain -- and won some points by telling Republicans in the room that he welcomed disagreements, "so feel free," one participant recalled.

In many respects, it seems Obama excelled by connecting with governors the way George W. Bush wouldn't, or perhaps, couldn't. As the Politico reported, the governors "were taken with Obama's openness, policy depth and just that he showed up to engage in a real back-and-forth, a move none could recall on the part of a newly elected president." It was, in the words of one state chief executive, "unprecedented."

For Democratic governors, it was a welcome relief after years of meeting with a Republican president they found to be unfamiliar with details.

"The contrast with our meeting with the sitting president was fairly stark," said Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen, recalling a "much more controlled" environment with President George W. Bush.

Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer, the incoming head of the DGA, was more blunt: "Just to have an administration, a president, a vice president, who listened, engaged, and came to meeting prepared -- it's a brand new idea." [...]

Obama impressed the governors with his ability to get into the policy weeds on the thorny question, demonstrating a detailed knowledge of FMAPs, the state-by-state formula which determines how much money the federal government sends to help cover Medicaid costs.

The dynamic will no doubt fade in time, but for now, comparisons with his predecessor are going to be extraordinarily helpful to Obama.

Well, what do you expect? Bush is semi-retarded and Obama is a genius of historical proportions.

As just a private citizen I already feel like I am being heard. It's amazing. I got so discouraged with Bush. The millions who protested the invasion of Iraq,,,totally ignored.

When i complained about the stolen election, or when anyone did, we were told to "get over it!"

Recession or not, I am happier now than I have been in eight years...and he isn't even in charge yet.

Yes, but did Gov. Palin see sparkles on her glasses? Did she feel he was winking at her?

a president who knows what the f**k he's doing: what a concept

I remember back in 2000 all the talk about Bush being a cipher (even some Republicans realized this, but were content that a good marketing campaign could get him elected and get them back in power). Turns out the talk was correct, and the devil's bargain was hell for the country (indeed the world) ...

And Bush was a governor, yet had no concept of what other governors were experiencing. The governorship of Texas is, er, a uniquely and weakly configured position, but still.

But... bu... buh.. but do they want to sit down and have a BEER with him?!?!

Sheesh, are we going to loose focus on the really important questions now??

Also, it's important to remember that Obama's 7 years in the Illinois Senate might have helped.

No, Simp, we are not going to "lose focus on the really important questions now". Obama's meet-and-greet with the Governors(as well as the working meeting that it was) showed "goodwill" on his part, as well as his knowledge of the problems facing the states, and his willingness to work with them on solving those problems. The juvenile (non)issue of being comfortable "having a beer" with him had absolutely nothing to do with the substantive issues involved in this meeting. Grow up, Simp!

Obama's a very smart, capable, informed person, but even he won't be able to stop the collapse of the US economy. It's coming, folks; 30-40 years of economic mistakes are finally coming home to roost.

It's simple. The adults are back in charge.

Yes, the governorship of the Republic of Texas is a limited position. But, then, one doesn't have to deal with the truly important decisions of the day, such as "Should I keep Sosa or trade him?"

"Eighty percent of success is just showing up" Woody Allen

I still get your point, however.

""The contrast with our meeting with the sitting president was fairly stark," said Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen, recalling a "much more controlled" environment with President George W. Bush."

Poor Bushie had to be protected from the "gotcha media" forcing him to "control" his "environment". That way he could be more Presidential, virtually gaffe proof. Oh wait,,,, never mind.

How the HELL did it ever come to this???

How did the bar ever get set so low?

Obama might not be one some see they could have a beer with (a contention with which I tend to disagree), but he sure as hell is the President I'd love to share a single-malt scotch with.
