CHRIS MATTHEWS STILL EYEING SENATE RACE.... Last week, FiveThirtyEight reported that Chris Matthews, the MSNBC "Hardball" host and a former Capitol Hill Democratic staffer, has "negotiated with veteran Obama staffers" about joining his team for a Senate campaign against Arlen Specter in Pennsylvania in 2010. Soon after, Matthews said the report is "absolutely not true."

Of course, Matthews wasn't denying interest in the campaign, he was only denying the report about negotiations with Obama staffers. In fact, by all indications, Matthews is seriously considering the Senate race.

Chris Matthews is dead serious about running for the Senate in Pennsylvania -- and shopping for a house in the state and privately discussing quitting MSNBC as proof of his intense interest, according to NBC colleagues, political operatives, and friends.

The garrulous host of the show "Hardball with Chris Matthews" has already picked out a home in Philadelphia to establish residency in the state, according to a Democratic operative in discussions with him about a potential candidacy. Over Thanksgiving weekend, at his vacation house in Nantucket, Matthews' family gave him their full backing.

As speculation surrounding his potential candidacy heats up, Matthews has also been asking advisers whether to step down from his MSNBC post well before his contract expires in June. At one recent meeting, he was advised that if he truly intends to run, he should resign from the network as soon as possible.

"We talked about the value of doing this now and six months from now. I advocated that he do this as soon as possible," the operative said. "It's the MSNBC stuff that's going to jam him up. I said, 'if you want to be a U.S. senator, step up and get into the race.'"

It's possible that Matthews is using a possible campaign as leverage in his upcoming contract negotiations with MSNBC, but a Democratic advisor told the Politico, "He genuinely wants to do this."

He certainly seems serious about it. Last week, Matthews reportedly sat down with Democratic leaders in Pennsylvania to "discuss the prospect" of a Senate campaign. This week, he met with two party lawyers and the state's incoming treasurer to get additional input about a campaign. Last month, Matthews chatted with former Rep. Joe Hoeffel (D), who said, "He is interested, and that's about all I can say."

For what it's worth, I don't doubt that Matthews is giving this serious thought, but I also suspect he expects his celebrity status to propel him to the front of the pack. If so, he's mistaken -- Matthews doesn't even own a home in Pennsylvania, he's rightly perceived as a creature of the Beltway, and popular in-state Democrats like Reps. Allyson Schwartz and Joe Sestak, and state Rep. Josh Shapiro, have all expressed interest in the race. If Specter is seen as vulnerable, and I believe he is, the field could grow quite a bit.

What's more, Matthews' on-air presence is a double-edged sword. Yes, he's very well known, but his constant commentary has led to a variety of remarks that may come back to haunt him.

if it gets him off my tv --even for a little bit -- i'm all in favor.

I never watch Hardball because I can't stand people interrupting each other and shouting to be heard. Given that that's his format, I think he'd be better suited for the House than the Senate.

As a Pennsylvania Democrat, I cannot imagine him as a realistic Senatorial Candidate. If Arlen Specter is challenged from the right and loses, practically any Democrat who can appeal to Philadelphia and the surrounding counties can win hands down. The last three state wide races Democrats have won by 11-205 against more conservative candidates.

If Specter does not, I think Matthews would be seen as a carpetbagger and many Democrats (myself included) would be forced to vote for Specter rather than a candidate who has no real link to Pennsylvania. This is more a mid western state that a New York or Maryland.

I have a dream--where Tweety does decide to run for US Senate, getting him off the air, and then loses his Senate bid due to some dug up deep dark secret which ends up disqualifying him from coming back on the air.

I'm with "mellowjohn" - Tweety should step down immediately and MSNBC should give his Hardball time slot to somebody who's more interested in hearing what his guests have to say than in hearing himself talk endlessly about whatever lame topic has piqued his interest.

I should think that the anti-Matthews negative ads ought to write themselves given his years of inane motormouthing. Also he's a really grating persona; I agree with the comment that he'd be better suited to the House. Last of all, why would a 62-year old pick now to launch a Senate career? The next few years are going to be all about eating political broccoli. And he'd be 70 by the end of his first term; he'd have to be nearly to his 80's before he got enough seniority to do anything interesting.

As a Pennsylvanian, I ain't exactly getting a thrill up my leg. I believe Rick Santorum used up the state's entire allotment of Senatorial boneheadedness for the next few decades.

can you even imagine that rude fucking gasbag on the senate floor. and i wouldn't trust that pig in a democratic seat -- you can bet he'd be blabbing any democratic policy initiatives/strategy to any and all who asked.

yeah, let's see that pig run as a democrat. then let's see the ads with the clips of him and g gordon drooling over idiot son's 'package' at his 'mission accomplished' moment; or perhaps when he said well into idiot son's collapsing support:

MATTHEWS: I like him. Everybody sort of likes the president, except for the real whack-jobs, maybe on the left -- I mean -- like him personally.

if the democratic party of pennsylvania latches onto him because of his celebrity status, they deserve to fucking lose. and i despise arlen specter.

The idea of Matthews and his out-of-control mouth being set loose on the floor of the U.S. Senate is about the only thing to recommend his candidacy. Well, that and I'm sure the suits at MSNBC wouldn't mind Matthews easing himself out so they can put someone on that people might actually want to watch.

I don't think people here in Pa. were ever too big on celebrity candidates, especially those who buy homes in the state for the sole purpose of running for election.
Just ask Lynn Swann--I think he at least owned a home in the state.
Also, Matthews' gigantic record of comments on MSNBC is a treasure trove for his opponents. I'm not sure how much he's thought about this, and the fact that most of the state is nothing like Philadelphia.

Just show the clip of Tweety drooling over Commander Codpiece declaring "Mission Accomplished."

That'd win him votes — if he were to run as a Republican.

Matthews getting clipped in the Dem primary--by a solid candidate who can unseat Specter--would be the best solution for all concerned. I fear I am dreaming again, though.

Whatever Chris Matthews' merits as a Senatorial candidate, he's most definitely *not* a carpetbagger. He's a native of the Mayfair section of Philadelphia, although Wikipedia says that he lived in Oreland (a suburb ~5 mi. outside of the city).

I agree with previous commenters. Let him quit so MSNBC can move Rachel Maddow to an earlier time slot. Then let him lose in the primary and disappear, writting a a tell-all book about insider "Warshington" politics on his way out. Matthews is just a hack who likes the sound of his own voice.

It's true that while I was glad to see Chris Bowers on Hardball, first, in principle, because I'm getting tired of seeing centrist democrat and right wing republican analysts telling me what the Democratic left thinks about Obama's transition and appointments. It was good that Matthews had one of the members of the Democrat left on the show.

Second, Chris was really good, showing that the looney, unhinged hippie lefties was a caricature.

But, it did cross my mind that Bowers is a party and elected official in Philadelphia, and that may have been one reason why Tweety had him on. I don't see how Tweety can even put out feelers for office, and also do this show.

ohj please!!!he is a misogynistic, homophobic egomaniacal hack! if we pa dems cannot come up with a better candidate who is actually representative of pa dems, we deserve six more years of snarlin' arlen.

Chris Matthews in the U.S. Senate? Does this country need another fruitcake like him in the Congress?

Posted by: HaroldinBuffalo on December 4, 2008 at 2:27 PM | PERMALINK

Sounds like a mid-life crisis sorely misguided.

Posted by: ellen on December 4, 2008 at 4:04 PM | PERMALINK

If he is seriously pondering a run for the senate, Matthews must be considered a leading contender to win the 'Dan Quayle Presidential Timber Award' trophy, awarded annually since 1996 to the most delusional politician in America.
