THURSDAY'S CAMPAIGN ROUND-UP....Today's installment of campaign-related news items that wouldn't generate a post of their own, but may be of interest to political observers.
* It took a while, but the House race in California's 4th congressional district was resolved yesterday, when Charlie Brown (D) conceded to Tom McClintock (R).
* For all of his many flaws, Chris Matthews seems to have enough poll support to at least make him vaguely credible as a Senate candidate in Pennsylvania.
* Leaders in both the House and Senate are moving forward with a plan to reduce the salary of the Secretary of State, removing a possible constitutional hurdle for Hillary Clinton's confirmation.
* The Democratic Governors Association announced yesterday that its new chairman will be Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer. Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley will be the vice-chair.
* Jeb Bush isn't the only Florida Republican with a famous last name eyeing the 2010 Senate race. Rep. Connie Mack IV (R), whose father was also a senator, is reportedly thinking about throwing his hat in the ring.
* Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell (D) was overheard on a live mic this week saying Janet Napolitano will make a great Director of Homeland Security because she doesn't have a family, and she'll have more time for the job. Rendell backpedaled yesterday and apologized.
* There are, believe it or not, new details emerging on the RNC's campaign wardrobe for Sarah Palin.

Good grief.

Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell (D) was overheard on a live mic
I'd bet Napolitano just laughed when she heard this. After all, the gist of the statement was that she is a hard worker, not that she can't find a hobby.
a plan to reduce the salary of the Secretary of State
Not that Hillary or anyone else would take this job for the money, but this solution is both absurd and offensive.

Rendell's comments are unforgivable, not because they're anything more than Rendell's standard mild buffoonery, but because they gave Campbell Brown an excuse to get into I'm Now a Very, Very Serious Journalist and I'm Really Outraged! mode. God, she's tiresome.

as disgusting as rendell's comments were, it was also interesting to watch the glee with which the msnbc fratpac covered it. they do seem to take particular delight in highlighting the esp demeaning attacks on high profile women. yesterday's it was the 'sloppy seconds' comment directed at some actress.

That's kind of an interesting comment from the person who noted that the RNC wouldn't be releasing this "new accessories" info if it weren't trying to smack down Palin.
Between this, the attempted promotion of Bobby Jindal, Jeb's triumphant reentry into politics (please, can the country issue a restraining order on that family?) and a few other things which escape me at the moment, I'm getting the distinct impression that the major players in the Republican party are really interested in putting the brakes on Palin. Popcorn for everyone.

Danp, did you actually read the article linked to? This is not absurd and offensive; it is merely necessary. It's called the Saxbe fix.

jdporter, I'm familiar with the reason. And there may well have been a good reason for putting it in the constitution, but to ask a SoS to take a paycut because they gave up a seat in the Senate, strikes me as, well, absurd and offensive - especially when failed CEO's are getting such huge golden parachutes. I think it says something about priorities, even if it is only done to create a nominal loophole.

Connie Mack's father was not only a senator; he was a senator from Florida. Maybe if Mack IV wins, he could cut costs by using some of his father's old stationery.
If Mack runs, yet another famous last name will come into play. He's married to Rep. Mary Bono (Sonny's widow).

For those of us not blessed with a subscription to Roll Call, could someone please summarize the constitutional prohibition (or give Article and Clause), as well as the proposed solution?
Thanks.

Oh, and despite Steve still refusing to blog about this, we could have an actual Green elected to Congress to replace the corrupt William Jefferson in LA-2nd District.
Steve, why aren’t you posting information about this?
You can do better. Why aren’t you?

I don't know if you've noticed, but Steve Benen is undoubtedly the hardest working man in the bloggin' business. He's bound to miss a thing or two here and there. Cut him some slack.

Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell (D) was overheard on a live mic this week saying Janet Napolitano will make a great Director of Homeland Security because she doesn't have a family, and she'll have more time for the job. Rendell backpedaled yesterday and apologized.
Actually Rendell's comment was more along the lines that the job took up so much of one's time, that one would be better at it if one did not have a family or other obligations.
In what way is that comment "sexist"? Answer: it isn't.
The sexists are the "liberal" tongue-clickers whose knees jerk reflexively any time the word "family" is mentioned in conjunction with a professional woman.
The actual facts in our country? Women and men who marry and especially those who have children are given all manner of benefits. People who "merely" have hobbies or pets that require a great deal of attention or time can basically fuck themselves. They are the ones working on the weekend when the other folks are licking sno-cones at the fucking zoo.

Is Gov. Napolitano a lesbian? Not trolling, just want to know. (Diversity includes dykes, too, you know.)
