SHE DOESN'T HAVE TO GO HOME, BUT SHE CAN'T STAY THERE.... When the U.S. Attorney purge scandal was at its height, some federal prosecutors became famous for getting fired for purely political reasons. Other U.S. Attorneys became notorious for being loyal Bushies who seemingly used their offices to advance the Republicans' agenda.

Take Mary Beth Buchanan, for example, the U.S. Attorney in Pittsburgh since 2001. Buchanan has been accused, repeatedly, of being one of the more blatantly partisan prosecutors in the country, and using her post to launch politically-motivated investigations. With Bush's second term nearly over, many have been looking forward to Buchanan stepping down, as all U.S. Attorneys do when the White House changes hands.

But therein lies the twist. As Faiz noted this morning, Buchanan wants to stay right where she is.

Despite a new administration coming into power, U.S. Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan said she plans to stick around.

"It doesn't serve justice for all the U.S. attorneys to submit their resignations all at one time," she said yesterday. [....]

More than that, she said she would consider working in the Obama administration. She would not discuss what her future might hold beyond the U.S. attorney's office.

"I am open to considering further service to the United States," Ms. Buchanan said.

Well, that's certainly generous of her to offer, but I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that the Obama administration will replace her very quickly if she refuses to step down. As Faiz reminds us, Buchanan not only brought dubious charges against Democrats while overlooking Republican wrongdoing, she also hired Monica Goodling and spoke with Kyle Sampson about some of the prosecutors who were ultimately fired in the purge scandal.

I can appreciate the whole "reconciliation" dynamic, but Buchanan really has to go, whether she wants to leave or not.

Anyone who got past the vetting process during the Bush administration needs to go. And they should all be considered "under suspicion" for voter fraud and malicious prosecution until otherwise determined.

Translation: "No one outside the gov't wants (mostly) or can't (unlikely) hire me. Where will I go? What will I do?"

Her refusal to bring charges against Congressman Tim Murphy for using congressional staff on his campaign is grounds enough for her to be fired. That was a very clear-cut case, with the evidence well publicized in the local press.

More "heads I win, tails you lose" Republican logic. Bush gets to clear out the ranks of U.S. attorneys (twice), but in order to make up for administration politicization at Justice, Obama should be forced to keep the Regent alumni and other assorted hacks now infesting the place. Right.

Buchanan? wasn't she the star of teh Tommy Chong prosecution?

Absent some special circumstance all US Attorneys go when there is a change of administrations. She doesn't have a choice. US Attorneys serve at the pleasure of the President.

I am with the writer above. This woman has made so many enemies nobody is interested in hiring her.

Bushies have no ability to reflect upon their insanity, so they continue to delude themselves that they are important even when empirical evidence says otherwise!-Kevo

I think this needlessly refuses to consider how the enthusiasm of talented, energetic, experienced personnel can be used to further the interests of justice and serve the people of the United States.

For example, I'm sure there is a pressing need for knowledgeable, experienced file clerks, who are willing to roll up their sleeves and really whip the files -- and even the filing system -- into shape.

And everybody knows -- as the Republicans have long made clear -- about the waste, fraud, and abuse that is rampant in federal agencies and government generally. I think an energetic, sophisticated auditor of office supplies, furniture, equipment, and other expendable and capital goods could save the department -- and the taxpayer -- many times her own salary by tightening up on underused equipment, over-purchase of copy paper and staples, and so on.

There is definitely a future for the Buchanans of the world!

I wonder whether she is setting herself up as the test case about the use of politics to get rid of U.S. Attorneys. If it is inappropriate to get rid of a U.S. attorney for political reasons during a presidential term, why, they will argue, is it acceptable at the beginning of a presidential term?

Posted by: jackt on December 5, 2008 at 11:40 AM | PERMALINK

She's just hanging around long enough to get fired, so the Reps have a "look, Obama did it too!" line for the future. Nuance, as always, will be eschewed.

Posted by: PDR on December 5, 2008 at 11:47 AM | PERMALINK

Yeah, she's setting herself up to be a martyr for the right--so she can whine about how she was forced out for political reasons.
And yes, she was the one who prosecuted Tommy Chong, and it was purely political.

jackt and PDR are exactly right. This is the beginning of the inevitable fight against the purge scandal.

Yeah, she's setting herself up to be a martyr for the right--so she can whine about how she was forced out for political reasons.

Yup. She's playing to become a talking point.

I wonder....would keeping her around make it easier, legally or politically, to investigate her previous abuses? The media might play the investigation of a _former_ USA as petty vindictiveness, but if she were still in office...

Is this a blogger conspiracy? Yglesias had a post titled "Closing Time" just a few hours ago.

You guys are determined that that song will be going through my head all day.

Well, MattT, every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end, after all.

Yes she's the one who went after Tommy Chong and also went after the whizzer device that foils urine tests for drug offenders. She is completely worthless and should be one of the first to go.

Posted by: Len on December 5, 2008 at 12:55 PM | PERMALINK

Is anyone really surprised at another republican that doesn't have the slightest clue as to what reality is?

Posted by: Gandalf on December 5, 2008 at 12:57 PM | PERMALINK

Wow, this is one delusional chickie-boo. She thinks herself all-powerful and untouchable in her ivory tower, apparently not realizing that she has to go whether she wants to or not.

And she apparently thinks that her skills and talents are so vast that the Obama people will come on bended knee begging her to work for them, a request she would graciously consider despite her lofty status as Queen of All She Surveys.

Earth to Buchanan: You are a worthless party hack with nothing to offer anyone. The only reason you got your job was that you did your Leader's bidding without question or scruple.

Well, your boss is gone, dearie, and without his protection, so are you.

K'bye.

I suspect what we are going to see is that a bunch of the Bush-appointed US attorneys will refuse to resign, with the idea of arguing that their subsequent removal is the equivalent of the Bush-era US Attorney scandal. That would certainly be consistent with the Republican tactics we've seen over the last couple of decades . . .

"I am open to considering further service to the United States," Ms. Buchanan said.

Allow me to suggest a year as truck driver in eastern Afghanistan. If you finish that, how about another year?

Seriously, however, I doubt that she is so stupid that she doesn't realize the position she is in. There has to be some ulterior motive behind this and getting into the hannity/limbaugh news cycle is probably involved in her strategy. What she is trying to accomplish beyond that, other than become publically visible, is something only she knows for sure.

If she can answer the question, "What is it about Obama that makes you want to serve him?" with a straight face, then have her fill out one of the applications for the vetting process.

Posted by: Marko on December 5, 2008 at 1:50 PM | PERMALINK

Good. Let her go to work with pick and shovel in a CCC-inspired recession recovery program.

"I am open to considering further service to the United States," Ms. Buchanan said.

The Military is recruiting.

Posted by: Lance on December 5, 2008 at 2:14 PM | PERMALINK

This is just her/their way of daring Mr. Obama 'to do the same as gw has done' and then say: 'See, he is the same, but when Obama does it, it is OK, just when bush did it (with the whole attorney-gate scandal), then it is different.' WHINERS!!!

You will see the whole rethug party getting together to thwart Mr. Obama at every turn. They cannot afford him to be successful at ANYTHING.

This is a nice bit of apple polishing, albeit a poisoned apple.
Maybe she has inside information that the Joker plans to simultaneously rob every branch of the federal reserve bank on midnight, January 19th. How diabolical! Who could have foreseen such evil? Wait, Mary Beth Buchanan did!
God bless you Mary Beth Buchanan!

Impanel a grand jury and get busy!

Posted by: Glen on December 5, 2008 at 9:22 PM | PERMALINK

Oh snaps! This is the problem with these people. They think they live their entire lives as public servants.
Wait, did I just say public servants?

These people think they can live off the taxpayers for their entire careers - this is worse than welfar fraud.

I have a few things to say to Ms. Buchanan, "Tramp, you need to join the unemployment lines like the rest of the American workers."

****This idiot is scared, she knows how the REPUBLICAN PARTY totally screwed up this economy and she'd have nowhere else to go.
