FRIDAY'S MINI-REPORT.... Today's edition of quick hits:
* Wall Street ended the week on a high note, with the Dow closing up about 3%. The other indexes did even better, with the S&P finishing 3.6% higher, and the Nasdaq closing up 4.4%.
* The markets upswing happened despite dismal employment numbers, and a new report that U.S. retailers posted the worst November sales in more than three decades.
* Those were some pretty scary right-wing activists at the Supreme Court today, convinced that Obama isn't an American. It was quite a sight.
* It seems the rumors about Caroline Kennedy possibly replacing Hillary Clinton in the Senate are fairly serious.
* A few more Obama White House staffing announcements were made this afternoon.
* Ana Marie Cox is leaving Time's "Swampland" blog.
* Miami Mayor Manny Diaz has been rumored as a leading candidate to become Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, but he's starting to draw heat from labor and activist groups, including the South Florida AFL-CIO.
* Former Rep. David Bonior (D-Mich.) is trying to rally support to make union activist Mary Beth Maxwell the next Secretary of Labor.
* No one should listen to Henry Kissinger.
* Sarah Palin has decided the Troopergate scandal has been resolved. Demonstrating her commitment to transparency and accountability, Palin is also refusing to release a transcript of the testimony she made during the investigation.
* I'm starting to think Alberto Gonzales is in a bit of trouble.
* Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.) has some more explaining to do.
* In light of his presidential inauguration, Barack Obama has decided to finally buy a new tuxedo. It will be, for those who are curious, a union-made tux.
Anything to add? Consider this an open thread.

Palin continues to remind me of W, spouting rhetoric which is completely opposite of her actions. "Watch what I say, not what I do." She has no shame whatsoever.

I'm confused. Doesn't having an American parent make you an American, no matter where you were born?

Also... There's a union for tux-makers?

Only if you're white and Republican.

This is like saying Einstein knew a little something about physics. Reading the qualifications of these two people literally had me shrieking with joy. I didn't know people this good still existed!
Quality professionals....GOD, I love this administration!!!!!

Latest in solar power: a PV panel manufacturing facility partially powered by PV panels:
http://www.solardaily.com/reports/Worlds_Largest_CIGS_Thin_Film_Solar_Array_Goes_Live_999.html
Once a few more of these are built, if fully powered by PV panels, we will have passed the tipping point for PV generation of electricity.
This is just one of the many alternative ways that the Federal Government could invest the money that it is thinking of investing in Chrysler, Ford and GM: invest in fully PV powered PV manufacturing facilities.
Your opinion may vary, of course, but I think that this is an important milestone.

"It seems the rumors about Caroline Kennedy possibly replacing Hillary Clinton in the Senate are fairly serious."
I think this is a good choice. I would think there is a good chance that Caroline will not like politics, and as such, will be a "good placeholder".
The other "Proffesional" politicians will be able to fight it out among each other, from an equal starting point in 2010.
If I am wrong about Kennedy, and she does enjoy politics, let the New York voters decide then who they want to represent them. If she is good enough for Obama, that is a very good reference for me!

if you have an american parent, you are an american citizen regardless of where you were born, but constitutionally speaking, you've got to be born on u.s. soil in order to be qualified to be president.

Recommending going to crooksandliars.com to see The Daily Show's Jon Stewart's take on the totally bogus interview Charlie Gibson had with Dubya.
Wow--talk about cognitive dissonance from Georgie.
Talk about no clue.

The last journalist?
Sullivan on Palin:
Actually, the Dish went out and interviewed eight of the leading obstetricians in the country and laid out all the facts of the case and asked the experts for their take. While none would say that this pregnancy could not have happened, and none would comment on a case they hadn't examined personally, all of them said it was one of the strangest and unlikeliest series of events they had ever heard of and found Palin's decision to forgo medical help for more than a day after her water broke and risk the life of her unborn child on a long airplane trip to be reckless beyond measure.

I'm confused. Doesn't having an American parent make you an American, no matter where you were born? --Crissa, @17:36
Somehow, I have an impression that it's the *site* of your birth that counts for more than the parentage. Else, why would the wingnuts screech about the "anchor babies"?
Most other countries go by the parent's (or parents') citizenship when according citizenship to a child although, in some cases, the site counts *as well*. I seem to remember that the mother of one of the Belgian Queens (or Kings?) was visiting Canada (I think) while pregnant and was rushed to the Belgian Embassy for the delivery so as not to knock the coming child out of succession.
This fixation on the place rather than parentage always seemed strange/amusing to me. It reminds me of an old Russian fairy tale, where a king is asked to resolve the ownership of a foal -- should it belong to the man whose mare gave birth to it, or should it belong to the man under whose cart the mare foaled?
All the same... When I found I was pregnant, my husband and I cancelled a (Fulbright) trip to Poland; even though my husband is Virginia born-and-bred (for generations), I wasn't a citizen then and I wasn't *about* to risk my child's US citizenship because he might be born in a wrong place.
Which brings me to the issue of the paranoia which seems to be swirling around Obama's citizenship. Yes, I think he was born where his mother *said* he was born -- in a Honolulu hospital. But it is *not* ridiculous to think that, had she delivered in Kenya, she might have wanted to make sure he had US citizenship from birth, without any doubts. Not because she was planning for him to become a President, by-and-by. But because, at the time, American citizenship offered protections that no other citizenship -- including British -- would have. Bush has screwed up so much in such a short time, that many may not remember how things used to be. But, believe it or not, American Embassies all over the world used to fight for the rights of their citizens tooth and nail. Which was not, necessarily, true of any other country.

Yes, I have something to add.
Several conservatives, whom I know personally, happen to be upset about the same thing, i.e., the hypocrisy and sheer audacity of the Obamas pretending that public schools were actually considered for their daughters.
Consider for a moment how they know that it was hypocrisy.

Article II of the Constitution states: "No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President ..." As the son of an American citizen, Obama can be regarded as a natural-born citizen, regardless of where he was born, since he did not need to be naturalized. But Hawaii state officials have certified that he was born there (after Hawaii was accepted as a state).

Mary Beth Maxwell appears to be an excellent, truly excellent choice for labor secretary. What a night and day difference from Elaine Chao she would be.

Ana Marie Cox is leaving Time's "Swampland" blog.
is this good / bad / file under who gives a s*** ??
never read swampland, haven't read time mag in over 20 years, never read wonkette.
read somewhere that the letter 'ell' was dropped from AMC's first name after she left wonkette as she seemed to be preoccupied with that type of sex while at wonkette.

I'm not sure about that one, but Princess Juliana of the Netherlands lived in Ottawa, Canada during WW II and had one of her children in an Ottawa hospital. The Canadian Parliament passed a special law declaring that the Princess's hospital room was outside Canadian jurisdiction for the duration of her stay so that her daughter would remain in the line of succession. Otherwise her daughter would have had dual nationality.
