Jefferson Loses

CNN tells us that "Dollar Bill" Jefferson will have to pick up his freezer and go home:

"Nine-term Democratic Rep. William Jefferson, who has been battling scandals and a federal indictment for the past three years, appears to have lost his bid for re-election.

Louisiana Democratic Rep. William Jefferson has been embroiled in a bribery scandal.

Republican challenger Anh "Joseph" Cao, an attorney and community organizer, has defeated Jefferson in the 2nd Congressional district race, according to The Associated Press.

With 79 percent of precincts reporting, Cao had 52.9 percent of the vote to Jefferson's 43.2 percent."

So long, and thanks for all the fish!

Hmm...Cao has a background as a community organizer? Doesn't that make him a pinko? We'd better check with Palin on this one...

This is excellent news...for Democrats. Jefferson is dead weight, and made the national party look bad. They couldn't get rid of him unless he went to jail--he was never going to lose a primary. But with Cao's win, they can line up a Dem in two years to take him on. It's a heavily Dem district (+28), so Cao will likely be a one termer. In the meantime, the Democrats aren't hurt by losing the seat for a cycle, and get to replace Jefferson with a clean candidate in two years.

Wow, a Republican won in a D +28 district? That's unexpected.

They're all dirty. The longer they cling on to their seats, the dirtier they become. Yet, this is small compare to Cunningham (R), who's sitting in prison right now.

It's important that we stop letting these sens and reps live and die in their seats.

For instance, McCain, 72 years old. Senator, receiving military pension, a monthly social security check of $1938 a month (See San Francisco Business Journal July 2008), his wife is a millionaire - what more does he want?

How about, To serve his country?

Look, I voted for Obama and indeed donated to a campaign for the first time ever. I recognize the unmitigated disaster that John McCain would have been as President. I helped him lose and I'm glad of my role. But can we all recognize that maybe, just maybe, not every member of Congress is motivated by a petty lust for filthy lucre? Some people really do believe in this country; they really do believe in the system; and they are willing to spend their lives trying to make it better.

By all means, let's end the free ride for lifers. But just because someone's lasted for many years doesn't ipso facto make them corrupt or unresponsive.

Yeah right, but pal-ling around with a former senator that says we're a nation of whiners?

By picking a running mate that attempted to cause division in this country?

As far as I'm concerned, Boy George had no choice but to tell the truth about the condition of our economy since his party LOST - other than that, we'd probably still be a nation of whiners and protectionist!!!

Jefferson should really be indicted for bribery and go to jail. The guy is Scumball #1. It was necessary to remove him.

In two years, the fight for this district will be really interesting. Cao might hold it, but probably not, if it is D+28 as someone said.

Jefferson should really be indicted for bribery

Jefferson has been indicted for attempted bribery. It appears from his indictment that he was never actually successful.

I take that back (7:59 comment). He was indicted for accepting bribes as well.

So, does the FBI put a tail on Jefferson and his "magic refrigerator" and conduct a new search the minute the new Congress is sworn in?

JM beat me to it: the Republicans nominated a _community organizer_? Well, good for them, and congratulations to Congressman-elect Cao!

But I do also have a feeling that the national party paid little attention to who wanted to be sacrificial candidate, and let the Congressman-elect run without vetting him since they really didn't care?

Congressman Cao may turn out to be a surprise not just to ex-Congressman and possible future prisoner Jefferson, but to the national Republican party, too!
