STEELE FLEES FROM MODERATES.... When former Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele was running for the Senate in a pretty reliable "blue" state, he was anxious to offer evidence of his alleged centrism. Now that he wants to be chairman of the Republican National Committee, Steele is equally anxious to prove the opposite. (thanks to V.S. for the heads-up)
Last year, with some fanfare, former Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele joined two prominent Republican moderates in announcing the revival of a centrist political organization, the Republican Leadership Council.
Now, Steele's name has mysteriously disappeared from the RLC's Web site.
Until recently, he was prominently listed as one of three co-founders, along with former New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman and former Missouri Sen. John Danforth. The change apparently happened within the past week, according to an Internet search.
What a remarkable coincidence. Just as he wants to convince the far-right GOP base that he's a reflexive, knee-jerk, conservative ideologue, Steele's name suddenly goes missing from the RLC's roster.
Colleen Parro, executive director of the anti-abortion Republican National Coalition for Life, recently called Steele's involvement with the RLC "deeply troubling."
She broke into laughter yesterday after clicking on the RLC's Web site and learning that the description of Steele's involvement was gone.
Neither officials with the RLC nor Steele responded to requests to discuss the Web alterations, but Parro noted that Steele was listed as a co-founder of the group as recently as last Friday. She saw the change as evidence that "he is trying to get away from it."
Keep in mind, Steele is a staunch opponent of abortion rights, but the fact that he was even associated with the RLC has become problematic with the Republican Party's activists.
It's quite a party.

In fairness, Democratic activists would think exactly the same thing about a DLC-associated politician.

Off topic but I want to remind everyone about how dangerous these right wing extremists are.
In the last few days of the campaign, the Republican National Trust PAC ran its "Reverend Wright Hates America" ad repeatedly on national television - Sunday & Monday Night Football, the SNL Election Special, Today Show, Amazing Race, Hardball, Morning Joe, etc.
The NRT PAC, registered on 9/29, had $205k in the bank on 10/15. How did the NRT PAC raise more than $5 million in less than three weeks to broadcast those ads on national television?
The NRT PAC's Post-General FEC report should have disclosed the names of individual contributors between 10/16 and 11/13 but the NRT PAC's report covered the period between 11/14 and 11/24.
A month after Election Day, we still don't know who paid for those despicable ads. The names of individuals who contributed more than $5 million to the NRT PAC remain secret.
BTW, the National Republican Trust PAC is the group that paid Dick Morris more than $24k to tout it as the next MoveOn.org on Fox and the internet.

Don't worry Mikey. Just remind your fellow Resluglicans that you tried to trick black voters into thinking you were a Democrat and they'll welcome you with open arms.
It's actually kind of weird watching the GOP devour itself. I was certain they'd be brought down by a series of goat-related incidents.

The bottom line - no one, whether far right or centrist should trust Steele. No problem here.

Steele's attempt to pass himself off as a centrist is about as phony as the naming of the Independent Woman's Forum - "Independent"? With Lynn Cheney and Nancy Pfotenhauer, who came from the far right Koch operation, running the Forum, they are far from being "Independent". NP left to become a Senior Advisor for Double Talk - Michelle B, the new President, tries to create a "fair and balanced" image on Cable show. But, an elephant is an elephant is an elephant, no matter what the moniker.

These slugs don't stand for anything but grabbing power and holding onto it.

How is that black man going to get along with redneck racists, which are the majority in that party?

A shout out to Michael Steele.
He guest hosted a talk show on AM 570 "Freedom 570" formerly "McCain 570" and while not thrilled with the quality of the show (570 is a nest of windbags and hacks), he did engage callers who didn't agree with him from the get go.
As we learned in previous posts here at W.M., this means he's a terrible host.
Too bad. The audience might have learned something.

BTW, my fundie sister-in-law is looking for places to move due to the election of Obama.
First thought was Saudi Arabia, perfectly suited to her racist fundamentalism, but unfortunately she's Christianist.
It's hard to come up with a non-Muslim country that is a homophobic and racist as she is.
As I'm really eager to help her find someplace farther away from me (and where a call from her would be expensive) I'm open to any suggestions.

Cal Gal, tell your sister-in-law to go to London, home of singer Boy George, George Michael, Elton John - that's where you can be gay, racists, and christian!!!!

BTW Cal Gal,
if your sister-in-law was just gay and christian, she'd be welcome here in the U.S.
HaHa, seems she could only be shunned in the GOP. She's not welcome with the dems because she's a racist.

Cal Gal;
Tell her to go to Russia. They're just as racist and homophobic as Americans are, and their president is white. They're also Christian. Eastern Orthodox, but hey that's like watered Catholicism. Close enough...
Anyway, Mr. Steele is in a world of hurt. Elephants, so they say, have long memories...

Yup, that's what Michael Steele deserve, he was on Real Time with Bill Maher. Actress Kerry Washington tore him a new A**hole.
Wonder what happened to Ward Connolly - the guy that says he's not black but everyone thinks he's black. Ward says he's Portuguese!!!!!(He's one of the co-founders of affirmative action bill in Cali)
Amy Holmes is next to get the boot.

annjell, is it just me, or does Amy Holmes do a lot of double talking? I've seen her on Maher and whenever a liberal out-argues her, she becomes real reasonable sounding. Later it is same old BS.
