NEWT GINGRICH, BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER.... Rep.-elect Anh "Joseph" Cao (R-La.) managed to get elected thanks to the cash in William Jefferson's freezer. Given the Democrats' overwhelming advantage in the district, Cao will have a lot of work to do if he plans to get re-elected in two years.
As Amanda Terkel noted, the Republican establishment completely ignored Cao during the election, assuming he'd lose. But now that he's eked out a victory, Cao is a party hero. Indeed, GOP leaders are rushing to embrace him.
Perhaps the most entertaining outreach comes by way of Newt Gingrich.
By midmorning Cao was interrupting an interview to take a call from former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who offered good wishes and, Cao said, counseled him "to reach out to the African-American community." Cao said Gingrich offered to act as a go-between.
Now, I can understand Cao wanting to establish stronger ties with the African-American community -- a clear majority (64%) of his congressional district is black, and he isn't. Indeed, Cao has already taken several steps to foster a relationship with, for example, the NAACP and the Congressional Black Caucus.
But putting that aside, what on earth makes Gingrich think he, of all people, has so much credibility in the African-American community, that he can serve as a liaison on Cao's behalf? Has the former Speaker been hiding an impress record on civil rights issues that we're not aware of?
Gingrich sure is odd.

What Gingrich really should do is become a comedian. He's already one of the funniest people in America. And it's not like anyone takes him seriously now.

Only Newt Gingrich would offer himself as a "go between" for a guy who just got himself elected in a majority black district.

Newt must be more desperate to get back in the game than we thought. I guess the occasional appearance on wingnut media shows isn't enough of a buzz for him. Now he's desperately trying to attach himself like a human limpet mine to someone he figures is his best shot at regaining some influence.
Considering that his target is brand new, has zero influence of his own, and is more than likely not going to get re-elected in two years, can there be a more pathetic attempt than this?
I think not.

I wonder when the last time was that someone won a congressional seat with only 31,585 votes.

Newt exists simply because he's a wedge. Sometimes if you need a wedge you'll find one at the bottom of your toolbox.

Gingrich sure is odd.
You would be too if your own mother named you after an amphibian.

I saw this rather bizarre comment from Newt too and couldn't figure out why Newt thought he was qualified--especially considering his congressional district was lily white.

Well... Cao is not your run of the mill Repub. Not life-long, to begin with (switched, from indie, fairly recently, or so I've read somewhere). Then, even though he's not black (like the majority of his constituents), he's not cracker-white, either; he's likely to have an understanding of minorities' lives that Gingrich will never have. And there's that "community organiser" tidbit in his bio, too...
So... I don't think Gingrich's offer was *really* about facilitating outreach to blacks. I think it was more about trying to show Cao a bit of love-from-above (and any excuse would do for that). *Just in case* Cao proves popular and has a chance of a re-election but might consider switching once again -- this time to Dems.
Repubs *need* to have as many minorities as they can scramble up -- a task that's not easy for them, given their general attitudes -- to show at their conventions and such. It's not surprising that they'd want to bind Cao to themselves as strongly as they can, now that he proved he's a horse that *can* race...

Kevin,
If you could, please note who has had an impress (sic) record on civil rights compared to Newt.
Of course, I would not compare Newt to men from older generations than he, but this is your cyber home and I'm just a guest.
Also, since I'm a conservative, I believe treating individuals as individuals and not a part of a group is an important predicate to "civil rights." I believe this after a short study of Jon Locke.
So short it might even be John Locke, I just don't know.
Congrats on your blog success, it's been around a long time and that means something.

Hello exlibra,
I've commentated and misspeltd shiit before.
It always gets off track, no matter how I state my case.
So let me just say this:
As an individual, would you agree that you do not understand Newt?

"Gingrich sure is odd." And verbose, too. And burdened by an overly inflated sense of self-worth.
"I believe treating individuals as individuals and not a part of a group is an important predicate to "civil rights."" But apparently Newt doesn't as he's offered to serve as an intermediary to the BLACK community.

Thanks for the response, Cal Gal, and I envy your weather!
The non-sequitor you posted above is illustrative.
Exlibra, based upon your initial response to Cao's status as a Republican, are you still wondering why Brewer's Famous Quotations lists Clemenceau saying:
If you don't vote Socialist/Communist before you are twenty, you have no heart- If you do vote Socialist/Communist after you are twenty, you have no head.
I could explain it to you, or there are numerous citations online you could explore. Either way, you should understand why Cao's a Republican.

Gingrich needs to leave the crack alone.

Easyliving1, @19:10,
As an individual, would you agree that your problems with English extend well past spelling? Your sentence structure and general clarity seem to have been influenced, heavily, by the Sarah Palin School of Thought and Expression.
I hope you don't mind my saying this but you really should have stuck with Locke; he's a *much better* model.

I have transcript from the conversation:
"Hello?"
"Hello, Anh Cao! This is Newt Gingrich! Just wanted to say congratulations and it'd be a really good idea to reach out to the black community."
"You think?"
"Oh I know! Were you aware your district was 64% black?"
"..."
"Hello?"
"Who is this REALLY?"

I hope you're not being serious. Everybody knows that "Newt" is a straight up jet-black ghetto name that is widely copied in the African American community. It practically oozes street cred; why, Fifty Cent was considering calling himself "Totally Newt" until fellow artists convinced him that it might appear he was merely trying to capitalize on the name - it'd be calling himself Jimi Hendrix. The Newtster is a legend in black America.

Cao is not the hero. That honor goes to the voters of that district. This is the exact opposite of what happened in my home state with Saxby Chambliss. It speaks very highly of those voters and I hope Cao realizes that.

Maybe he meant "body guard."
Or maybe he's just an attention whore.

Nice touch of the Newtster to offer Cao all of his tapes of "The Bill Cosby Show" - Will really bring him up to speed.

Yes, he is odd. However, there's nothing mysterious about this latest garbage that came out of his mouth. His ego is enormous and he thinks people want to hear his opinion or need his help, counsel, etc. on everything. Remember early on in the presidential campaign when he thought there might be some enormous clamoring from the public wanting him to run? Ridiculous to the rest of us but very logical to him.

I have no love of the Newt, but I do recall back in his Speaker days his coming to my hometown of Louisville, KY, and dumping a ton of money on the local black churches on the West End. I do believe this is his idea of "acting as a go-between".

Nature has a subtle way of warning us of impending disasters, tsunamis, earthquakes, tornados, etc. Is nature trying to warn us today? See the evidence at, http://stopthepresses2.blogspot.com

Not a Newt fan, but since when must someone be black to relate and care for the black community? Please put that outdated notion at the bottom of the toolbox next to the wedge someone so cleverly joked about.
PS - you do not get elected in GA these days without having a clue about the concerns of the black community.
