OF ALL THE PEOPLE TO RUN FOR THE SENATE.... This has "bad idea" written all over it.
In the midst of the U.S. Attorney scandal, Griffin became well known as one of the "loyal Bushies" who replaced Bud Cummins, a federal prosecutor less willing to play ball with the White House political agenda. Griffin served as a U.S. Attorney for six months, but was never confirmed by the Senate. But that's only a small part of what makes his possible Senate campaign troubling. Griffin, more importantly, was an opposition researcher for the Republican National Committee before joining the White House team as a Karl Rove protege. As an oppo man, Griffin helped dig up footage that wound up in an ad by the Swift Boat Vets who smeared John Kerry. In describing his own work, Griffin once said, "We think of ourselves as the creators of ammunition in a war. We make the bullets." And then there's the "vote caging." To refresh your memory, it's a process in which Republicans target eligible voters for disenfranchisement, send them mail knowing it'll be returned, and then use the "caged" mail to limit those voters' access to the polls. Griffin was the research director for the RNC in 2004 and sent a series of confidential emails to Republican Party higher-ups with the suggestive heading "RE: caging." The emails contained spreadsheets with the heading, "Caging," with lists of homeless men and soldiers deployed in Iraq. And now he wants to be a U.S. senator. Uggh. Normally I would welcome anyone running against "Miz Blank" as she's known here, since she's a blank slate upon which PACs and big ag write out their wish lists which she then cheerfully carries out. She's one of I think only 4 Democrats who voted against the automaker bailout - just can't stand the idea that someone, somewhere, might be earning a living wage. John Kerry "smeared" and "swiftboated" an entire generation of Vietnam veterans in saying nearly all participated in war crimes and so much of what he said back then, he simply made up. He was only in Vietnam for four months. The left was so used to spitting on Vietnam vets, they were shocked beyond words when some of the vets started spitting back. It's not a "smear" if it's true. It was actually the Swift Boat vets who were smeared and continue to be smeared. All of those who opposed Kerry served at least three times as long in combat as he did. Thousands of those who served in Vietnam were greviously wounded and demanded to be returned to combat when they got out of the hospital out of loyalty to their troops - not John "someone else can lead these guys, I've got a campaign to run" Kerry. The Swift Boaters, with their years of combat experience earned the right to have their say and counter the smears John Kerry had leveled at them and every Vietnam vet. And it will show Southern Democrats that they lose when Republicans are allowed to behave badly.
