FILLING THE CABINET.... With Barack Obama preparing to head out of town for a Christmas vacation this weekend, it looks like the transition team is putting the finishing touches on the remaining cabinet vacancies. Believe it or not, we're just about done with the entire list.
We talked earlier about Rep. Hilda Solis of California becoming the next Secretary Labor, but there have been quite a few announcements, and a few related rumors, over the last 24 hours.
* Mary Schapiro will be the chairwoman of the Securities and Exchange Commission.
* Rep. Ray LaHood will be the next Transportation Secretary (and the second Republican in the cabinet).
* Former Dallas mayor Ron Kirk is likely to be the next U.S. Trade Representative, which is a cabinet-level position.
* Retired Navy Adm. Dennis Blair appears poised to become the next Director of National Intelligence.
* Gary Gensler will head the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, while Daniel Tarullo will fill the open seat on the Federal Reserve board in Washington.
* Physicist John Holdren, an international expert on energy and climate, will be Obama's science adviser.
That fills every position in the entire cabinet except the CIA director.
I don't have anything especially interesting to say about this; I just thought I'd update the record.

FYI: I'm the new head of the CIA. We're keeping things so secret that we didn't even want it announced, but I knew I could trust you guys. And yeah, I'm the reason your internet connection seems a little slower today.

Obama has announced that the newly-minted position of Chief Technology Officer will be cabinet level.
What's the buzz on the CTO spot?

dren - thanks. You're right, of course.

today has an interesting table of the level of education of the various picks. It was compiled before Solis, but the rest of them are there. Impressive. Though, amusingly, the Sec of Education is the one of the few w/o a graduate degree.
I also find it amusing (so, I have a warped sense of humour. Sue me) that Obama has done a tit-for-tat on the Transportation. 'cause, wasn't Mineta the token Dem in Bush's early days?

Has there ever before been a transition with the major characters named this early? Before Xmas?
Of course the Republicans will feel it necessary to disrupt the Senate process somewhere, but doesn't this sort of marginalize their obstructionism?

Isn't there something weird with head of the FBI and tenure? Like some sort of fixed term?
As for CIA - it isn't easy to find someone with the heft, experience, etc. period, much less with the events of the last 8 years hanging over the heads of a good bit of the intelligence community (see the last almost candidate for the job).

Yes, but how many of them are basketball players? Someone observed a little while back that a lot of Obama's early choices were basketball players, and then when they announced Arne Duncan as Education Secretary on NPR, one thing they mentioned was that he too is a basketball player. The Constitution, of course, forbids any kind of religious test for public office--but does it permit a basketball test?
