FRIDAY'S CAMPAIGN ROUND-UP....Today's installment of campaign-related news items that wouldn't generate a post of their own, but may be of interest to political observers.

* As I type this, Al Franken leads Norm Coleman in Minnesota by 123 votes. It is Franken's first official lead since the process began six weeks ago. According to a projection by the Star Tribune, Franken will win by a margin of 80 votes.

* The AP reports that the final outcome will "also depend on some 5,000 withdrawn challenges that have not yet been allocated to the candidates," and that may not be resolved until the new year.

* On a related note, CNN reports that Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R) is "quietly prepping for the possibility of a temporary Senate appointment," working under the assumption that the contest may not be resolved when Congress reconvenes in January.

* Caroline Kennedy had lunch with Al Sharpton in Harlem yesterday. He praised her as a "unique candidate," but would not say whether he supports her Senate bid. "I will trust the government's judgment to decide what's best for the state, he told reporters. "I won't get into that."

* Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle (R) is popular in her home state, but if she were to challenge Sen. Daniel Inouye (D) in 2010, he would still be the favorite.

* Rod Blagojevich has scheduled a 3pm (eastern) press conference in Chicago. That ought to be interesting.

I'm tempted to wager that Rod only talks about the snowy weather we had last night and skips the more pertinent topics altogether.

From yesterday's "Mini-report": Chuck Todd will be the new chief White House correspondent for NBC News. Todd is generally a very sharp and knowledgeable political analyst, but is he a beat reporter?

Silly rabbit...White House correspondents aren't beat reporters — they're stenographers. In Todd's case, he'll just regurgitate GOP talking points.

The awesome aria of a cognizantly-aware pig with a faux Elvis wig being sucked unceremoniously into a sausage grinder the size of a '48 Plymouth? Wouldn't miss it for the world!!! Pass the popcorn, please....

And one bit of news from a recently concluded campaign that people may find interesting. Sarah Johnston, the mother of Levi Johnston, supposedly to become Sarah Palin's son-in-law, was busted for six felony narcotics charges (and most of them were Class 2 Felonies, for 'making or distributing' not just Class 4 for s'imple possession.'

The police are not giving out much information, but as the folks at muflats said:
"If anyone is still bothering to watch reality TV, or soap operas, I really don’t know why. Quit wasting your precious time, and tune in to real life in Alaska. It’s far more dramatic and compelling, and you’ll get a lot more bang for your entertainment buck."

The shine has come off Lingle a little bit recently; she campaigned vigorously for Sarah Palin, and then she said Obama wasn't really very Hawaiian even if he was born here, and then she blew off the invitation to that Governor's conference he held, saying she was too busy.

Since Hawai'i went for Obama by a higher vote margin than in any other state, that didn't sit well. The tone of the letters pages in the papers has been almost universally negative.

My local public radio station in Seattle just announced they will cover the Blogo presser live. I can only assume that the snowstorm that has transportation in the city seized up by icing is involved. Unless their regular host is trapped at home by the weather, there can't possibly be anything Blogo would say that is worth listening to live here.

Further to Linkmeister, Governor Lingle was the subject of critical editorials by the daily newspapers for the statements mentioned. She was also roundly criticized for spending the election season on the mainland campaigning for McCain, while her minority party struggled with no party leadership. Ultimately, the election produced the smallest number of Republicans in the legislature ever. Only two senators, out of 25, are Republicans.

As Hawaii's tourism-based economy falls further in the tank, Lingle eschewed Obams's invitation to the attend an economic development session at the national governors conference. She claimed she was too busy. Local columnist Lee Cataluna heaped scorn on the governor for saying she was too busy when the gov's schedule was empty, except for run-of-the-mill photo opps.

Dan "The Man" Inouye is the most popular politician in the history of the state (yes, even more popular the iconic governor Jack Burns). And don't say earmarks like it's a bad thing.
