BLAGOJEVICH CLAIMS HE'LL BE 'VINDICATED'.... Gov. Rod Blagojevich has barely uttered a public word since his arrest 10 days ago, but he held an event in Chicago this afternoon. Regrettably, he did not break his silence to announce his resignation, but rather, to profess his innocence.
"I will fight, I will fight, I will fight until I take my last breath. I have done nothing wrong," Blagojevich said in a brief news conference. "I am not guilty of any criminal wrongdoing."
There were, as one might imagine, quite a few reporters on hand for the governor's comments, but Blagojevich did not take questions from reporters.
As for the prospect of resigning, the governor said, "I'm not going to quit a job that people hired me to do because of false accusations and a political lynch mob." He added that he has "powerful" forces against him, but he has "the truth," which is the "most powerful ally."
After quoting Kipling at some length, Blagojevich said he is "absolutely certain" that he "will be vindicated."
He also appealed to Illinois voters, urging them to "patient," and asking that they "afford me the same rights that you and your children have. The presumption of innocence. The right to defend yourself." Blagojevich added that he is "dying" to respond to the accusations, but he said he'd reserve his defense for the "appropriate" setting, which in this case "isn't 'Meet the Press' or the news," but rather "a court of law."
I don't imagine his remarks today are going to change a lot of minds, but the statement does tell us that if Blagojevich is going to go, state lawmakers are going to have to impeach him.

Paging Mr. Nixon; Mr. Nixon. Paging Mr. Nixon.
People want to know if their Governor is a crook. Well I am not a crook.
I'll be vindicated.
So that's what Blago said, eh? Ummmmmm....
So did Ted Stevens.
And Senator "Wide Stance."
And Duke Cunningham.
And...and...and...and...and...

The guy's completely delusional. "I'll fight, I'll fight, I'll fight"? Is it out of his mind? There's nothing to fight about. It's over.

He's so hyperbolic in his rhetoric.
Fighting until his last breath? 'Dying' to answer questions?
I expect him to come out next time in blue face paint shouting about how they'll never take his freedom.

You know, it's perfectly appropriate for an ordinary, private citizen to say, the only appropriate forum to respond to the charges is in court. A private citizen, after all, doesn't owe the public any explanations. But, I'm sorry, a person in a position of public trust does owe the public a duty to be candid and forthcoming.

It's simple, Rod is less popular in Illinis than W is in America. The public is ready for the Gov to go, by resignation, by House impeachment and removal by trial by the Senate, or by conviction by the U.S. Attorney in a federal corruption trial. Just get gone by whatever happens first.
As for his "fight fight fight", this is a mind in need of serious meds. In so many ways, Rod, W and Sarah all have the same mental state. Scary thought.

He think's he's Elvis!
He's been quoting Elvis....
I think the SunTimes is having a contest to see who can rewrite an Elvis song to describe recent Blago events......
when somebody's this delusional, self-parodying comedy is semi-automatic.......
and yes, I live in Chicago, I'm used to all of this.... I do feel sorry for Blago's kids, or anyone unrelated to all this with that last name....

Let me guess, he was rehearsing lines for the play 'Corrupt som Bitch'.

The whole thing was just painful to watch. As I just noted to a friend, they sent him out there to quote Kipling's "If" with a straight face and an air of victimhood...and he did it. Dear God.
At least we can take comfort in knowing they'll whack those bangs off at the Marion Correctional Center.

A very creepy man. I can't even imagine what the people he beat to win 2 terms were like.

On the level, we know they are after Daily and or Obama…
Put it this way the Republicans are used to running Illinois with “Ryan’s Run”, then along comes Blagojevich and kapowey, what the…
Now the news, And Fitzgerald, is Whiney, screemy, cat calling and a whole lot of hate radio news making mayhem. To my surprise even after Michael Medved spent endless minutes describing how no one could be as corrupt as Blagojevich proceeds to describe Madoff and how this scandal is regular on Wall Street. But more incredible Medved sincerely talked about that it will be hard to take down Blagojevich. Now how does he know? One wonders.
Ladies and Gentlemen this stuff of taking down the Democrats has been going in Illinois for over four decades. The curiosity not talked about is finally the failed Tribune paper is one of the Companies that are going bust. The center piece of Illinois Republican chewy stuff, Wriggly gum, and Wriggly field are on the block. And foremost WGN radio, television. Whoa, they lost billions and are filing for bankruptcy. For me, the tribune should have made a deal with Blagojevich for taking out one editor, now the system is going to fail.
A lot of public snarling, the most significant, Mike Madigan and his daughter lost leverage and respect especially from me. For me, a great deal of admiration and respect was lost when Lisa Madigan made such a quantum leap rushing to the Supreme Court asking to take out Blagojevich for being crazy or something, like not being able to function as a Governor. From just the Grandstanding of Patrick Fitzgerald, Bush’s wiping boy.
Serious allegations have been made to plenty or sitting politicians especially that Southern Governor who was actually convicted for wrong doing but seems to have been kangarooed to jail. Now national new covers the legal tragedy in a very, very little way becuase of Republican partisan embarrassment. Maybe, Just maybe Blagojevich is angry and pushing the envelope but doesn’t any one who is facing this pressure just get harsh as they might face indictment or impeachment.
Form my view I would like to see the public fight. It should be interesting to watch Blagojevich wrestle with the legislature. There are plenty politico’s in Illinois that have disgusting characters and this would be the perfect time to flush out those Lieberman types that are infested in Illinois politics.
Go get em "Gojevich" lets see what you’re made of. Better yet lets see what they, the legislature are made of.
The funny thing is Blagojevich's lawyer could very well be right...This will be fun...For me I learned a lot in these past few days and Blagojevich maybe mad but he is not crazy...

He's got bad hair and a funny name. (We in Illinois like our pols with funny names.) He's got a foul mouth. And, it seems, an over-inflated sense of self.
But did he commit a crime?
I think if you read Fitzgerald's complaint that the evidence is thin. He talked a lot, and even indicated that he would LIKE to commit a crime, but we're going to have to do better than that. In the meantime, the man has a point: he's entitled to the same presumption of innocence that everyone else is.

Blago will be vindicated, all right. Only in a different sense. Kind of like the Vought SB2U Vindicator, a pre-WWII navy dive bomber that fought at the Battle of Midway and was shot down in flames in large numbers without accomplishing anything.

Somebody should have asked him "So, you like Kipling?", just to hear the immediate vehement denial that he had ever kippled in his life.

It's all a sad commentary. Krugman's NYT editorial is a good one about this corruption that has run rampant over the last several decades in our country.
As far as Blago's performance today--it doesn't surprise me. That's what Narcissists do. They love the drama, they love the attention, they love the sense that it's them against the world. They are typically very lonely people with few friends (like him), because they don't know how to maintain an intimate respectful long term relationship. It's much easier to fight real and imaginary battles.
I'm truly sorry this all has to get to be played out on T.V. Like another long O.J. trial. And meanwhile, we lose out on a senate seat from Illinois.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
It's demoralizing for all of us, and I for one will be tuning out.

Is anyone who ever claims they'll be vindicated ever...?

I disagree that the only way for blago to go is impeachment. I know it's cold and snowy in Chicago these days, but pick a day and go to his office, it's right dontown, and all 200,000 people or 300,000 people hold up their sign that simply says GO.
His only defense in staying is that the people of Illinois elected him to do a job. It is up to the people of Illinois to tell him he's fired.

I could care less whether he goes or stays but I do think we should have a higher standard for kicking out a governor other than selected transcripts from a prosecutor. Show us where he took the money.

Show us where he took the money.
Oh, he took it, all right. Remember, this isn't all that Fitzgerald has on Blagojevich. Rezko has begun to talk again, which has gotten him an indefinite stay of sentencing.

The people of Illinois are telling him loudly and unequivocally, through direct correspondence, contact with the media, calls on legislators, protests and polls. Almost 90 percent say they want him out yesterday. Presumably the others didn't understand the question.
He's too far gone in denial to hear what we're saying.
mr. shortstop and I were saying this morning that we might as well take our jaws off the floor where they've been resting for a week and a half, because anyone capable of doing what he's done simply isn't capable of rational thought about it afterward. It makes no sense for all of us to say we'd leave the country in abject mortification if this were us, because it couldn't be us. This guy is so deeply warped that he's in a world of his own. Actually, it would be interesting to compare his psychological profile to Bush's.

If I had to guess, he'll be vindicted before vindicated.
