CHANGING THE TONE.... It was one of those moments that defined the Bush/Cheney era. Sen. Pat Leahy (D-Vt.), the leading Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, had been critical of Dick Cheney's ongoing ties to Halliburton, but when he saw the vice president on the Senate floor in advance of an annual photo in 2004, Leahy thought it best to be cordial and professional.

But Leahy approached Cheney, arm stretched in friendship, the vice president famously told the senator, "F*ck yourself."

Asked about the incident, Cheney later said he was pleased with himself for how he handled the situation, and said he saw no reason to apologize.

Fox News' Chris Wallace asked Cheney if, looking back, he has any "qualms, second thoughts, or embarrassment" about what transpired on the floor of the Senate. Cheney responded, with a smirk, "No, I thought he merited it at the time." He added that he and Leahy, four years later, are now "civil" towards one another. What a relief.

Soon after, Bill Kristol noted how impressed he is with Cheney's lack of regret, saying the vice president's response to Wallace's question was "a beautiful statement, really, of justice."

Let's remember, then, that if Joe Biden approaches, say, Arlen Specter or Orrin Hatch on the Senate floor, he tells them to go "f*ck themselves," and then brags about how appropriate his conduct was, as far as some on the right are concerned, this is completely appropriate behavior for the vice president to engage in.

George W. Bush admitted the other day that he's disappointed he wasn't able to "change the tone" in Washington. If he's curious where his White House went wrong, he may want to reflect a bit on his VP's conduct.

George W. Bush admitted the other day that he's disappointed he wasn't able to "change the tone" in Washington.

Please, officer, can't we just talk like gentlemen. I never meant to shoot the guy. I'm not that kind of guy. But he pissed me off. What was I to do? All I wanted was a little respect - but no, he insisted on keeping the money. If he had only handed it over, none of this would have happened.

One interesting thought is how the Bush presidency would have been different if Cheney were not VP. We likely would have no Rumsfeld, possibly no Iraq war and no torture, and more of the "reach across the aisle" and "compassionate conservative" Bush from Texas.

This is not saying that Bush's presidency wouldn't have been a failure regardless -- the man's limitations are hard to get past. But the smugness, nastiness, and lack of reflectiveness Cheney is showing in these "exit interviews" seem to be the worst aspects of the Bush administration personified.

The excerpts from "Angler" insinuate that, rather than the folk tale we've been fed about Bush coaxing a reluctant Cheney to take the job, the old fox schemed his way onto the ticket. I think Bush views himself as a good judge of people and character but it's clear Cheney played him for a fool. And now his Presidency in his ruins and Cheney doesn't seem to have a moment's doubt about the role he played in it. Pathetic.

The level of intentional delusion still coming from these guys is really quite sad. I'm sure they don't really want to live in the weird nightmare world they project for the rest of us to believe in, but I suppose they feel they have no choice. Cheney's actions were right because Cheney said they were right and conservatives have established a reality that simply doesn't allow them to disagree with him. Bush has been tossed out as being impure, but Cheney is still a conservative ideal.

I'm quite positive that Wallace, Kristol, and even Cheney know that Cheney was wrong for what he did. They're just not allowed to admit it. And it's this rigid insistence on never admitting error that continues to sink them further. But they're intent on proving their theory that you're only weak if you act weak, and nothing will convince them that reality isn't dependent on their perspective. They still think they can create their own reality and they'll stick to it until the end.

Translation for the Dubya-impaired: I'm sorry the Democrats refused my request to change their tone.

If he's curious where his White House went wrong...

There's a reason why we call him Incurious George. He doesn't give a shit, Steve.

As far as Dick Cheney is concerned, apologies and consequences are for suckers, Democrats and poor people. Dick "Go Fuck Yourself" Cheney is the coldest, meanest, motherfucker in DC. In other words, he's a PIMP!

Dick Cheney sends his bitches and ho's out into the world to engage in risky behavior and get his money. A pimp has the ability to direct his bitches to stand on the corner on a cold rainy night and fuck anyone who comes along, then bring him the money. They can also direct their whores to fuck themselves. How else would you describe the behavior of Bush, Powell, Whittington, Novack, and especially Libby?

Were talking about a draft dodger who when questioned about evading service to his country during the Vietnam War stated matter-of-factly that he had "other priorities."

Were talking about a man who shot a millionaire in the face, then covered it up for a few days before getting the poor bastard he had shot to come on TV and basically beg his pardon for getting in the way of Cheney's shotgun blast. His victim who was neither a Democrat or poor falls under the first category.

Cheney is now engaging in the other activity for which pimps are notorious, bragging. See the smug smirk of defiance on his face as he admits to authorizing torture.

Cheney knew Leahy was going to accepting his crude insult without comment, retort, or sanction. Fuck yourself Pat Leahy!

Cheney knew Powell was going to use his sterling reputation to legitimize his cooked intelligence, and in the process destroy his reputation. Fuck yourself Colin Powell!

Cheney knew Whittington would keeps his bruised and buck-shot mouth shut while he got his story straight. Fuck yourself Harry Whittington!

Cheney knew Novack would publish the identity of a covert CIA agent and be unable to justify his unpatriotic and treasonous behavior to his readers and colleagues. Fuck yourself Robert Novack!

Cheney knew Libby was going to perjure himself and fall on his sword for him, ruinng a heretofore a distinguished career in law and public service. Fuck yourself Scooter Libby!

Cheney knew Bush would commute Libby's sentence and tarnish presidential legacy (as if Shrub needed any help doing that). Go fuck yourself Junior.

Finally, Cheney knows that Bush will pardon Libby, and the American people, as represented by Nancy "Impeachment off the table" Pelosi and Harry "No nuts" Reid, will not hold anyone to account for the last eight years of cronyism, incompetence, corruption and crime. Go fuck yourself American tax payer.

The conservatives always loved to lecture us about morality and propriety, dignity, how believing in God gave Christians ethics and you couldn't have morals without God, etc. What turds. They're not even turdblossoms, just turdstools!

No Steve, that is completely appropriate behavior for a Republican, not for a Democrat.

Don't you understand how a Conservative thinks?

Posted by: Lance on December 21, 2008 at 6:39 PM | PERMALINK

And the fact that Cheney now says he and Leahy are "civil" to each other suggests nothing more than Grover Norquist's line about how Republicans think Democrats will be easy to get along with, once they're neutered.

Leahy's a liberal hero on a lot of stuff, but I'm not sure the strongly-worded letter strategy has done all that well for him, or Democrats, or the country.

Can't wait to see how the Holder hearings go, now that Specter and company have decided to take Karl Rove's advice and be obstructionist assholes again.

Yippee.

Cheney's response vis-a-vis the Patrick Leahy incident reminds me of a defiant petulant 3 year old. I think Cheney pretty much stays on about that emotional level

Seriously, was there anyone sentient on the planet who didn't realize what was going on as soon as Cheney announced that he'd done an exhaustive, nation-wide search and it turned out that the best candidate for the job just happened to be him?

Sorry about all the swearing.

But Bill and Disk said it was OK.

And I do know what I'm going to say when I met the man.

It'll be fun! I'm sure he'll get a good laugh out of it. Unless I'm maybe the 10,000th person that says it to him.

Posted by: Glen on December 21, 2008 at 8:29 PM | PERMALINK

Cheney's view of himself and his role in history is not shared by historians and by the public. He will go down in history as the second in command of the most incompetent administration in our country's history.

Cheney can curse his colleagues and defend his motivation for doing so all he wants but he only cements his reputation more firmly as another foul mouthed, arrogant Republican ideologue who steered his party and his country into the ditch. A hundred years from now students will be reading about his administration's incompetence and violations of the constitution and that's all that matters at this point.

Good riddance.

Just to clear up a possible misconception: Bill Kristol no longer sucks Vice-President Cheney's penis. He does still, however, frequently hold vice-President Cheney's penis in his mouth to get the taste.

Leahy brings no credit on himself in this episode. Cheney was an officer of the famously collegial Senate. Leahy should have immediately lodged a formal complaint, let the complaint itself be approximately 2 paragraphs long, and force every Senator to publicly vote yeah or nay.

Sorry, but the fact that he let Cheney bully him in public showed Leahy as a coward and a blowhard. No glory there ...

Posted by: drinkof on December 21, 2008 at 10:33 PM | PERMALINK

Did Cheney also mention how he's still pissed at Harry Whittington for getting in the way of that quail?

Posted by: 2Manchu on December 21, 2008 at 11:23 PM | PERMALINK

Everything Leahy was going on about was a scurrilous lie. Of course Cheney was justified.

What is telling is the way in which you people go on and on and on and on and on about what Cheney said while blithely giving Leahy's lies a pass.

"Everything Leahy was going on about was a scurrilous lie. Of course Cheney was justified."

Well, of course, that's nonsense for starters; I won't even get off into Cheney intelligence, and all his absurd lying.

But even taking your ridiculous statement as a fact, that's just not how the Senate (and Senate protocol and rules) works. They tell scurrilous lies all the time. That gives no excuse whatsoever for a complete break in decorum on the Senate floor. It's the one thing that's just not done, it was a clear attempt at showing disrespect for the rules, and the Senate itself, and Leahy should have stood up to the bulling, right then and there. Through the Senate rules, which would have either 1) gotten Cheney a well-earned, and valuable, censure, or 2) shown that Republican Senators had no respect for the rules.

It's that simple.

The dickman will say the same thing to just about anyone. That's his way of saying hello to those he has feelings for.
He's doing it all the time to himself and really likes it.
He thinks everyone should be doing it too.

Ah, Cheney has nothing but love in his heart....

"Go f*ck yourself" is essentially what Cheney has been saying to us all for the last eight years.

(BTW, there IS a known correlation for pent up hostility and health/heart problems).
