NICE CHRISTMAS GIFTS FOR LOYAL BUSHIES.... One might think the Bush gang will finally be gone on or around Jan. 20. Alas, a whole lot of these characters will be hanging around Washington quite a while longer, thanks to rewards from their boss.
As President Bush settles in for his last Christmas in office, he has been busy handing out presents to some of his top aides. And they are not the kind that require wrapping paper or a bow.
The White House announced on Wednesday the appointments of key members of the president's inner circle, including Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez, to high-profile boards and commissions. The Christmas Eve appointments will allow them to serve far beyond Jan. 20, the end of Mr. Bush's term in office.
The White House said that the positions are unpaid, but appointees receive reimbursement for expenses and per diem compensation. They do not require Senate confirmation.
Ms. Rice got a spot on the John F. Kennedy Center's board of trustees until September 2014. The position should guarantee her good seats at the performing arts venue for the next six years; she is currently an ex-officio member of the board.
Mr. Bush's gift to Mr. Gutierrez: membership on the board of trustees of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, a research institute in Washington. Joining Mr. Gutierrez as a trustee is Barry Jackson, a former deputy to Karl Rove, who serves as assistant to the president for strategic initiatives and external affairs.
In all, two dozen White House officials were appointed to positions on government committees and councils, with terms lasting up to six years.
They're bound to leave us alone eventually, right?

they're like vampires, just when you think the sunlight was enough, you realize you really needed that stake!

Fred Fielding to the Water Board, perhaps?

This is just disgusting, it really is. This is just another sign of the hubris and ignorance that have defined this administration from the beginning. The first great act of hubris was Bush running for president, the next was Cheney selecting himself to be not only VP but the ideological focal point for the administration. It has only gotten worse since then, and now that there is finally an end in sight there appears to be no end in sight. This is yet another in a long list of betrayals of the public will by the worst administration in American history. Good riddance to the lot of them (whenever they actually go).

Or maybe not. According to the Bushies, President Obama will have the authority to declare them enemy combatants and ship 'em off to a black site prison.

So Condi Rice--a well-accomplished classical musician in her own right--gets an appointment to the Board of the JFK Performing Arts Center--and you think this is an outrage? C'mon, save your ammo for something worth fighting over. As myself a Democrat, and a [somewhat lower-level] amateur classical musician as well, I frankly think Condi deserves this appointment after eight years of public service. OK, I'm not happy with her performance as a public servant, but, dammit, she *has* served the country, and I, for one, think there ought to be some limits to partisan rancor. This sort of spleen doesn't make us look good in the eyes of anyone who isn't us.

A columnist elsewhere had a good idea. If we are indeed stuck with these Ghosts of Malfeasance Past, we can take a cue from (I believe) Thailand. When the Thai government found it couldn't remove a minister from office, it redefined his duties. He is currently teaching government sponsored yoga classes.

Isn't this exactly the kind of appoinment that Blago was angling to get for himself and wifey?

Ms. Rice is guilty of lieing to Congress during her testimony, of helping to sell an illegal war to Congress and the American prison, of participating in the planning of "enhanced interrogation" techniques, and so on.
She is thus a war criminal and guilty of many other crimes both against the American People, the Constitution and against humanity.
She deserves a very long prison sentence, not some cushy appointment.
