FRIDAY'S CAMPAIGN ROUND-UP....Today's installment of campaign-related news items that wouldn't generate a post of their own, but may be of interest to political observers.

* New York Gov. David Paterson (D) is apparently opposed to the idea of a "caretaker" senator to keep the state's Senate seat warm until 2010.

* The AP, counting on "two people close" to Paterson, said Caroline Kennedy has emerged as his likely choice to fill the Senate vacancy.

* Possibly tipping the scales in Kennedy's favor was an unexpected endorsement from State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, New York most powerful legislator, who had previously expressed reservations. Silver said yesterday, "If she is the appointee of the governor, I will certainly be supportive of her. I will work for her and will work strenuously for her election."

* Norm Coleman appears poised to keep Minnesota's unresolved Senate race "bottled up in the courts for weeks or even months." Al Franken will likely be declared the winner early next week.

* There are as many as 18 people eyeing Rahm Emanuel's House seat, but the top tier includes state Rep. Sara Feigenholtz, Cook County Commissioner Mike Quigley, and former Transportation Security Administration official Justin Oberman.

I don't live in that district anymore, but it'll be fun to see what happens. I used to look a little askance at Quigley, but he's been absolutely fantastic at bringing attention to the horrific abuse of TIFs in Cook County...and Daley's dictatorial control over the TIF process.

Finally the grown- ups begin to chime in in NY and dispell these unrealistic notions of "fairness" that Democrats flaunt to their own detriment.

Paterson wants to win in 2010. He needs someone to run for Senate who is able to get the money needed and draw a lot of attention to Democrats being winners. Caretakers do nothing for the state but set them behind in senority. Bloody primary fights make him look bad for allowing it to happen.

You take a seat when you can get it and you keep a seat by whatever it takes. Otherwise, you're not suited to be in politics - in the first place.

CK is the best choice for everyone -and everyone NY is going to coming to the same conclusion before this is over unless they plan on challenging the GOV. themselves.

It's that clear cut and that simply.

feigenholtz is currently my state rep and she's great. quigley is currently my rep on the cook county board and also does a great job opposing toddler stroger, son of previous board president john stroger and a continuing practitioner of government by nepotism. justin oberman is the son of former 42nd ward independent alderman and prominent "lakefront liberal" marty olberman, and was a homeland security advisor to the obama campaign. all are good progressives.
another name to throw out would be my current alderman tom tunney, currently the only openly gay member of the city council. the 44th ward is heavily gay (not that there's anything wrong with that), and that could be a drawback in the more ethnically heavy 5th district -- once represented by both dan rostenkowski and (ta-da) rod blagojevich.
i'd be happy with any of them, but i really like feigenholtz and quigley in their current jobs and would be sad to see them leave.

From the article:

The lesser-known candidates will have trouble getting their campaigns together, Soto said.

“An unknown would need more time to raise money,” Soto said.

Forget the money -- at this point it's boots on the ground that count.

As far as Tunney is concerned, not likely. I think labor would be against him thanks to his prominent role in killing Big Box in Chicago.

I don't know whether this is "campaign-related", but Lynn Sweet writes in the Chicago Sun-Times:

[Illinois Senior Senator] Durbin will be marking the beginning of his second term Monday and Tuesday with a series of receptions. Though Burris is not on any invitee list, "if he shows up, we will be gracious about this," Durbin spokesman Joe Shoemaker told me Thursday. Durbin's team has been told Burris would like to see him. "I can't imagine that we wouldn't meet with him," Shoemaker said.

5th district -- once represented by both dan rostenkowski and (ta-da) rod blagojevich.

How dare you leave Mighty Mike Flanagan off that list?! What is that loser doing nowadays, anyway?
