JEB ISN'T RUNNING IN FLORIDA.... After gearing up for a likely Senate campaign in 2010, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R) announced this afternoon that he's not running.
Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush will not run for the open Senate seat of Sen. Mel Martinez, he announced in a statement released moments ago.
"After thoughtful consideration, I have decided not to run for the United States Senate in 2010," said Bush. "While the opportunity to serve my state and country during these turbulent and dynamic times is compelling, now is not the right time to return to elected office."
Bush's decision robs Republicans of a top-tier recruit who would have immediately been favored to hold Martinez's seat. Without Bush in the race, Republicans are almost certain to play host to a crowded and competitive primary.
This will, of course, put a crimp in his father's hopes to see yet another President Bush in 2016.
Jeb's announcement comes as something of a surprise. As recently as two weeks ago, it appeared that the former governor was poised to officially launch a campaign, lining up would-be contributors and picking up support from party leaders. Bush would have been handed the party nomination on a platter, and would have been favored to win the seat. Over the last 48 hours, however, Bush pulled back, leading to today's announcement.
Today's news will be a boost to Florida Democrats, who see the seat as a key pick-up opportunity. The frontrunner for the Democratic nomination, at least for now, is Florida's chief financial officer, Alex Sink (D), the only Democrat on the state cabinet and the only woman to hold a statewide office. Also in the mix are Reps. Ron Klein, Allen Boyd, Robert Wexler, and Kendrick Meek, as well as state Sen. Dan Gelber.
On the other side of the aisle, Rep. Connie Mack IV has expressed interest in the race, and with Bush out, state Attorney General Bill McCollum, who's run for the Senate before, is almost certain to run. No word yet on whether Gov. Charlie Crist (R) might be interested.

I'm guessing he wants to stay away from Obama and the Dems--and the very confused Republican Party-- as much and as long as he can before he makes a run for the President.

Maybe his prospects research team told him some bad news?

Don't you think Jeb should have been named George and George should have been named Jeb?

Great, more dynastic politics, even without Bush -- Mack's father, III, held Florida's other Senate seat from 1989 to 2001. Plus there's the Hollywood connection, sort of once removed -- Mack IV is married to Rep. Mary Bono, widow of Sonny. (Republicans criticize Democrats just for getting support from Hollywood, but their side of the aisle seems to have had the most high-profile actual office-holders from show biz: George Murphy, Ronald Reagan, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sonny Bono.)

They were right, Jeb *is* the smarter brother. At least he's smart enough to know that the world will never accept another Bush in public office, at least for a few decades anyway.

I'd thank god but I'm not certain anything is listening. Oh, what the Hell! Thank you Jeb and Thank you Jebus!

BTW, here's a comment from an earlier thread reminding us that Jeb was not so smart (rational?) after all:
[quoting another]:I hope people haven't forgotten how, after Terri Schiavo was finally allowed to die, [Jeb] Bush ordered the state Attorney General to investigate her husband's possible responsibility for the events that led to her brain damage. Hey, we lost the fight, so now let's get even by framing the husband for murder!
[commenter:
Ah, yes. Good times. Let's also recall that he threatened to personally storm the care facility, state troopers at his side, to get to Ms. Schiavo's bedside.
And they say he's the smart Bush.

The Bush family should never be allowed to run for elected office, or to breed, ever again!

That's what you get for believing anything from Politico.
They are the online version of Faux News.

I dont think many people will be naming their kids George in the future, much like how there are not many Herberts after Hoover. It was already an unpopular, but this unpopular president sealed the deal.
But to answer your question, they shoud have both be named George, much like George Foreman named all his sons George. This would really be a stigma for JEB's political future. And why does he go by JEB anyways? John Ellis is much more presidential to be honest. As long as he's known as JEB, I don't think he has a shot. The name is almost as notorious as Dubya.

Mick, @17:26,
You know, you might be on to something... Perhaps he intends to run, in '16 as "John Ellis Bush; no relation to JEB", hoping no-one will remember the family connections.
Vis Dem candidates, I wouldn't mind seeing Wexler as a Senator, provided they could find someone with similar profile to replace him in the House. What little I've "seen" of him, I liked.

I believe "Jeb" is another fake Bush folksyism. (I know that's not a word. Don't care.)
It's too bad about the name "George." I've always liked that name for its simultaneous solidity and potential for whimsy. It's not like the world lost anything much when the name Herbert became moniker non grata. Or Adolf. Or Ulysses. Ooh, now, I want to think of them all.
exlibra: Wexler has turned out to be quite a pistol, hasn't he? And have you ever seen his original Colbert Report appearance? Hilarious.

I wonder if Papa Bush's recent comments about Jeb becoming president affected his decision. Maybe he thought they made him look presumptuous, or silly.
Poor Jeb. He just can't survive the other Bushes, politically. Not that I want him to--dislike his politics, but by all accounts he was the most capable. Instead we got stuck with George.

Actually, I thought the "JEB" nickname was something he picked up at his prep school. I can't find the bio article now - maybe it was offline - but I swear I remember the story being that it was some kind of rich kid thing and not a "Bubba" thing, though he probably gets votes from plenty of folks who think his folksy name means he's not an elitist ass.

Easier to run for president without having to have made all those nasty votes that senators have to make.

A plea to the Bush family; Stay the hell out of our lives. Dueling Georges have done enough damage to this country to last a lifetime. Between the lies,Contra, invasion of privacy,et al,one or more of them should be in jail. Just for thought....Why was Bush1 in Saudi Arabia still doing business on September 12,2001? The only Bush I want to see in the White House are the ones on the front lawn.

Bye-bye Bush family - don't let the door hit your goddamned Nazi-financing, descended from Franklin Pierce (worst president till his descendant G.W. Bush), worthless asses on the way out.
Good riddance to the worst rubbish in American political history ever.
