CREDIBLE ECONOMISTS CAN STILL APPLY.... About three weeks ago, House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) sought out economists to oppose the idea of a government rescue package in response to the economic crisis. He knew he didn't like the idea of injecting money into a struggling economy, he just needed some credentialed conservatives to tell him how right he is. As Matt Yglesias put it, Boehner "picked his policy position first, and then started looking for experts to back him second."

And how's the initiative going so far? Brad DeLong took a closer look at some economists who chose not to endorse the House Republican caucus' opposition to a stimulus plan.

In fact, no current or former member of the President's Council of Economic Advisers -- Democrat or Republican, living or dead, sane or insane -- has signed up for the Republican House caucus's list of economists opposed to the stimulus package. None. Zero. Nada. Sifr. Efes. Wala sero. Kosong sifar. 'Ole. Knin. Pujyam. Mann. Dim. Nocht. Null. Meden. Hitotsu. Sifuri. Ling. Sunya. Mwac. Ataqan. Saquui. Hun. Illaq. Wanzi. Wanzi. Pagh. Na. Uqua.

Nobody.

That should tell you something about today's Republican Party.

It does, indeed.

But see Nate Silver's report of some wankery in that direction by Greg Mankiw: http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2009/01/intellectual-dishonesty-gasp-from.html

That won't stop the obstructionist Rethugs from opposing any recovery package. They'll cite phony statistics, make up 'facts',and claim God is against it. Anything to make them look stupider than they already do.

I expect we'll see all these "names" appear on Boehner's web site petition any day now.

Did Brad avoid frog to make a subtle point?

"decided his policy first, then looked for experts to support..."

Looks as though, Boner learned his skills from the Fab Five Supremes in 2000. The Queen of Hearts doctrine.

Have you ever heard Boner speak. Any sentient human being scratches their head whenever he opens his mouth. I'm amazed you give him any play at all. I figure that the majority of the people in his district never got through the 9th grade. There is no other explanation for electing a sub orangutan like him.

Maybe Boehner will cite the influential 2001 paper by Wanzi Dim Zero and Sunya Kosong Sifar, or bring 'Ole Knin Pujyam out of retirement...

Boehner "picked his policy position first, and then started looking for experts to back him second."

Exactly the right wing way. And also the way of the intelligentt design groupies.

Um, correcting you to be polite, but "hitotsu" is the Japanese count-word for one or single. "Nai" is probably a better choice.

"Nain" is Broad Scots for "none", BTW.

Robert:
I think you'd say "nashi" instead of "nai," or you'd say "rei" (for zero). On the other hand, maybe Brad's implying that there is a single Japanese economist who opposes an American government rescue package?

Gandalf,

You are absolutely correct when you say "I figure that the majority of the people in his district never got through the 9th grade. There is no other explanation for electing a sub orangutan like him." I live in his district and for the life of me I cannot figure out how this asshat gets re-elected. The last guy that opposed him didn't run an ad of any kind and still received over 85,000 votes..... unfortunately that isn't the majority.
