PALIN'S MISPLACED MEDIA CRITICISM.... Chatting with Esquire, Sarah Palin decided to complain, once again, about the media. This latest whine, however, was a little more foolish than the others.

"I'll tell you, yesterday the Anchorage Daily News, they called again to ask -- double-, triple-, quadruple-check -- who is Trig's real mom," Palin said. "And I said, 'Come on, are you kidding me? We're gonna answer this? Do you not believe me or my doctor?' And they said, No, it's been quite cryptic the way that my son's birth has been discussed. And I thought, Okay, more indication of continued problems in the world of journalism."

At first blush, this might sound reasonable. For the Anchorage Daily News to call, months after the campaign, just to make sure the governor really is her son's mother seems like a clear example of media excess.

Except, that isn't what happened. My friend Alex Koppelman explained that the paper was actually defending Palin and debunking the bogus rumors about her family. The Anchorage Daily News' editor even emailed Palin directly about this, responding to her concerns.

"You may have been too busy with the campaign to notice, but the Daily News has, from the beginning, dismissed the conspiracy theories about Trig's birth as nonsense. I don't believe we have ever published in the newspaper a story, a letter, a column or anything alleging a coverup surrounding your maternity.

"In fact, my integrity and the integrity of the newspaper have been repeatedly attacked in national forums for our complicity in the 'coverup.' I have personally received more than 100 emails accusing me and the paper of conspiring to hide the truth (about Trig's birth.) [...]

"[W]e have been amazed by the widespread and enduring quality of these rumors. I finally decided, after watching this go on unabated for months, to let a reporter try to do a story about the 'conspiracy theory that would not die' and, possibly, report the facts of Trig's birth thoroughly enough to kill the nonsense once and for all."

So, Palin's favorite example of the "continued problems in the world of journalism" is actually a newspaper coming to her defense, setting the record straight, and defending her against nasty and baseless rumors.

She sure is an odd one.

...and it sounds as if she refused to answer the question.

That'll certainly put the conspiracy theory to bed!

The whole pregnancy thing is something she wants to keep alive or has lied about. She never released her records; nor has she ever explained the irresponsible odyssey she took bypassing world-class neo-natal facilities. She is a crack-pot. And her children are suffering for it. Drop-outs, mysterious illnesses, teen-pregnancy, underage alcohol use--these were not rumors, they were My Space photo posts. She has a dysfunctional family.

...and it sounds as if she refused to answer the question.

Of COURSE she refused.

If she puts this thing to rest it would be one less thing for her to point to and scream MEDIA BIAS about. By dragging it out she can continue to play the victim and continue to be the darling of the far-right weirdos who like to pretend that she's some kind of conservative martyr/messiah.

In her next interview, she'll complain about the Esquire interview. And after that...

I'm actually looking forward to her getting squashed like a bug in the Republican primaries for 2012.

Palin's comments to Equire are not "misplaced" and they are not "foolish".

They are part of a deliberate, calculated, scripted, focus-group-tested propaganda effort to portray Palin as the victim of "powerful liberal elites" and "the angry left" and thereby cultivate her status as a "conservative" heroine for the "right wing base", which is to say the weak-minded, ignorant, neo-brownshirt mental slaves of Rush Limbaugh.

In Palin's defense (a phrase I don't think I've ever used before), the newspaper's purpose in asking the question may not have been made clear over the phone, in which case I don't blame Palin for being annoyed about it.

I think secular animist is barking up the right tree. She seems to be cultivating a populist movement. She is the only republican who is even dimly aware of the (white)working class, and she speaks their language.

the seal wrote: "She is the only republican who is even dimly aware of the (white)working class, and she speaks their language."

That's hardly the case. Most of Rush Limbaugh's audience is "white working class" and much of the language that Palin uses has been pretty much lifted from Rush Limbaugh's script.

As for this discourse being "their language" -- i.e. the language of working class people -- it is really the language of their worst fears, basest instincts and most shameful prejudices, language which is used to manipulate them into despising and resenting other folks who share their interests and supporting right-wing Republican crooks who proceed to rob and steal from them on behalf of ultra-rich corporate oligarchs.

Posted by: SecularAnimist on January 13, 2009 at 1:05 PM | PERMALINK

She never released her records; nor has she ever explained the irresponsible odyssey she took bypassing world-class neo-natal facilities.

Well ... there are lots of reasons one might not want to release medical records. STDs, an abortion or two in her past, hemorrhoids, things like that.

As for explaining her decision to get on a plane to Alaska when she started going into labor, it may just be that there is no good explanation, that she just did something incredibly stupid. Frankly, if she's telling the truth, which I assume she is, she actually comes off worse than she would if the Trig conspiracy theories were true. At least then she could say she was lying to protect her daughter or something like that. As it stands she was just being reckless. Perhaps hoping that Down syndrome baby would just sorta abort itself along the way?

As for explaining her decision to get on a plane to Alaska when she started going into labor, it may just be that there is no good explanation, that she just did something incredibly stupid.

She had ties to an Alaskan separatist party. Both directly and through her husband.

You don't really need much more of an explanation than that - being native-born is usually a big deal to separatists, and even if you have moved away from the big political questions, the symbolism may still be important. (Much as lapsed Catholics often still want to get married in the Church.) I never really thought there was much more to the story than that, once I found out about the Alaskan Independence Party ties.

Uh, what about the other baby? So, then here I go again with the poignant (;-) story of how I called the Governor's office minutes after the first MSM report (NBC news for me) of Tripp's birth to Bristol to offer congrats (on a lark). The young ditzy girl answering the phone didn't even know Tripp had been born, and told me I was the first person to call the office about the blessed event.

Well, to this day AFAIK there are still no pictures or any "evidence" of Tripp other than people's word for it, including the funny note that a "Joe the Pediatrician" delivered Tripp on one day or another (oddly, accounts vary.) People Mag did offer money for pictures, yet unseen by anyone else IMHO.

Andrew Sullivan continues to point out oddities and contradictions in the Palin/Bristol pregnancy narratives and evidence (such as it is) - he may be tendentiously and aggressively bitchy against females he despises (Hillary, Palin) but he's not stupid and he's not really a crackpot. What gives with all this?

Posted by: Neil B ☺ on January 13, 2009 at 1:59 PM | PERMALINK

There's another issue here that hasn't gotten enough attention. Apparently Bristol Palin missed several months of school in the 2007-2008 school year. No one here mentions that, but it should be easy enough to check.

I continue to believe that Trig is the governor's grandson, no matter how loudly she protests.

BTW Steven, once again you are being the too-goody liberal honor boy who has to huffily defend one on the other side and slam our own to look moral and independent. It's all very heart warming but it's a false charge this time. There really are suspicious factors about her and Bristol's pregnancies and narratives. It is wrong for you and other liberals looking to indulge in trying to look and feel better with that "aren't we noble people, see how we pick on our own miscreants to defend even our enemies" tripe. Basically I like you and you do a good job, but don't pull this shit so much OK big guy? Thank you very much.

Limbaugh's audience is NOT white working class. His folks are white middle and upper-middle class. Businessmen. Salesmen. Stay-at-home moms. White working class folks are a bit too economically populist or religious for Limbaugh.

Heh, maybe I was too hard on Steve B, since the line " ...and defending her against nasty and baseless rumors" may well have been just a contextual reference to the way the ADN presented the issue and not necessarily Steve's own opinion. But SB could have made it clearly by putting that or a quote into quotes. Well I can be too uptight but I don't like that routine I dissed up there, whenever it really happens.

He did. See http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/birthcertificate.asp

Anybody got a link to Trig Palin's? Nope? Didn't think so.

Ms. Palin could end the whole controversy by publishing said birth certificate. And until she does, she should stop whing about other people's (legitimate) curiosity.

Posted by: Marko on January 13, 2009 at 3:09 PM | PERMALINK

Well, since the rightwing nutjobs refuse to believe that Obama is really a natural born American citizen, despite having seen his COLB, . . . I have decided that we need yet even more proof that Trig is truly Palin's son. And, no . . . a COLB will not be sufficient since we all know that they can be forged . . . . especially since Palin is governor of Alaska. Why leave all the wingnuttery just to the rightwing neocon truthers.

Posted by: shortstop on January 13, 2009 at 3:47 PM | PERMALINK

Palin is a pathological liar. And it is she who continues to raise the "maternity" issue, part of her paranoid worldview. The rumors are persuasive because her story is so preposterous, and she is on record telling many lies. She could easily have put those "nasty" rumors to rest with some basic proof; Obama posted his birth certificate to quell stupid rumors about his birthplace (though some dead-enders continue to believe he is a space alien or something).

I think it is a concerted effort to create this "Those east coast liberal elites are being mean to Sarah, and laughing at us folk who like her..." theme.

I'm just not sure that attacking Tina Fey and Katie (KATIE????##@@!???) Couric is going to be effective. Katie Couric? Seriously?

Hey doubtful, you're a fucking retard. All sorts of maladies and misfortunes that occur in the human experience should be exposed to humor. The very worst things experienced should be the first to be humorized. Your path, creating zones of endless seriousness and depression, leads to insanity. Retarded children, AIDS, rape, cancer, religious genital mutilation, spousal abuse, and flesh-eating diseases, all cry out for humor specifically because they are so debilitating to the human psyche. You can indulge in your suffering without an outlet by yourself, but go fuck yourself if you try to prevent other people from coping. To conclude, if you honestly believe what you wrote, you're a narrow minded imbecile.

Palin's had a taste of the spotlight. She's not letting go. I'm guessing that there are going to be interviews and events of escalating craziness until 2012, when she gets her ass beat by Mike Huckabee, and thereafter becomes a zombie candidate every four years like Harold Stassen (or Roland Burris, for you young'uns).

When JFK Jr. went down in his private plane, the right-wing blogosphere went crazy with celebratory remarks, anti- Kennedy jokes, bait-for-fishes jokes, people saying it was the answer to their prayers, wishes for Caroline's death, statements he deserved to die because of Chappaquiddick, and much, much more. There was not one word from any member of the extended Kennedy clan their victimization by the media.

Palin's right: it's all about class. The Kennedys have it. Sarah Palin doesn't. I actually think that's why she has a good shot at being the sacrificial lamb of 2012. She'll say whatever she thinks will push the most buttons.

FACT:
Palin could make all the rumors go away in an instant by producing real evidence that she is the birth mother of Trig Palin.

Since she has not produced one single shred of real documented and supported evidence, she is either lying about Trig's birth mother or perpetuating the rumors and criticizing others for her own means.

Either way she is clearly not right in the head and probably needs professional medical attention.

As has been mentioned...anyone who has ever spent any amount of time around Palin knows what an out and out liar she is. She will lie and misrepresent anything that might make her look bad or that will not advance her desires at the time.

Sullivan at the Atlantic has posted the 12 lies of Sarah Palin which cannot be debunked...but has been "proven" as lies.

The Anchorage has never investigated Trig's birth conditions but has just accepted her story. They have admitted that they will do a story only to prove her story is true...so much for going where the info leads...they already have the result so they will just go for facts that support it. It may or may not be true but that doesn't change Palin's reputation...

It may look like she is being deliberately deceitful, but there is another possibility. As Ms. Couric made painfully obvious, Palin doesn't read much of anything associated with news and information around the world. It is possible that Palin heard that the Anchorage Daily News had printed something about her latest childbirth, and didn't bother to read the article or was not able to understand it (remember in grade school being graded on "reads and comprehends..."?). In any case she missed the point.

The most bizarre fact is that she used her daughter's current pregnancy to prove that Trig was her child.

Besides all the potential medical and legal documents which could prove Trig was hers, how about a simple photo with a little of her belly sticking out. I have hundreds of photos of my wife's pregnancy. People take photos of each other. She has three school age daughters, none of them took any photos? Oh, that's right she hid the pregnancy from them until 7 months into it. But still, after she told them, nobody took any photos? Not one? It isn't like she was camera shy.

Nothin eevul, just no heroic measures, and lettin' Jesus take the wheel.

The only books she is on record as reading are the Little House books and the Bible.
Palin is the stake in the heart of Jacksonian populism.
For decades republican elites have pretended to be Noble Yeoman Farmers while scamming votes from the base with anti-elitist egalitarian snake-oil.

One of the most telling things I heard Palin say in an interview was her answer to the question-- "who are the elite?"
Her response--" anyone that thinks they are better than you."
The distillation of resentment in that statement is profound.

She is beloved by the base because she actually is one of them, and not a stealthy elite foisted on them by the republican intelligentsia.
The truth is, NYFs are simply not fit to lead.....because more highly-educated, more highly-intelligent people actually ARE better as leaders.

Have yall ever even considered that the reason Sarah continues to allow the events surrounding Triggs birth to remain a mystery is because it was a virgin birth stemming from an immaculate conception? And that Trigg is actually the baby Jesus, come back to save us all souls?

How do we even know if the baby has actually been born? Every news report about Tripp's birth so far is based on statements by Colleen Jones, Sally Heath, Sarah Palin or her press office. If Bristol was 5 months pregnant in August, or if Trigg was born before they say, the original rumors of Bristol being Trigg's mother still stand. If baby photos of Tripp are later released, how can they be dated? They haven't even told the hospital Tripp was allegedly born at.
