WEDNESDAY'S CAMPAIGN ROUND-UP....Today's installment of campaign-related news items that wouldn't generate a post of their own, but may be of interest to political observers.

* Al Franken's lawyers, citing federal law and the Constitution, are asking the Minnesota Supreme Court to force his certification to the U.S. Senate.

* New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo had his formal interview with Gov. David Paterson for the Senate vacancy.

* If Paterson is taking public opinion into consideration, a new Quinnipiac poll shows New Yorkers preferring Cuomo for the gig over Caroline Kennedy, 31% to 24%.

* Democratic leaders aren't exactly excited about the prospect of Roland Burris seeking a full term in 2010.

* It's generating no attention at all, but new Sen. Ted Kaufman (D) was sworn in this morning to fill Delaware's vacancy in the Senate.

* Michael Bennet, soon to replace Ken Salazar as a senator from Colorado, wrapped up a four-day statewide tour yesterday, introducing himself to voters who may not know who he is. The tour seemed to go well.

* Steve Hildebrand, who ran Barack Obama's field program, will now advise Rep. Kendrick Meek's (D) Senate campaign in Florida.

* NRSC Chair Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) wants every Republican who's seeking re-election in 2010 to start campaigning now.

* Rob Portman, best known as George W. Bush's budget director and trade rep, formally kicked off his Senate campaign in Ohio this morning.

* We don't yet know who the candidates will be in Missouri's open Senate race in 2010, but Democrats appear to begin with a slight edge.

NRSC Chair Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) wants every Republican who's seeking re-election in 2010 to start campaigning now..
It seems that what the highest priority is,now, is to get this country back on track, not start the demeaning process of running for office. This is a distraction and makes no sense in a crisis. When the house is on fire, you don't start drawing up plans for its rebuilding; you put out the fire and saves the lives of those in danger.

It is a sad commentary on our political system that it allows such irresponsible behavior as this. Perhaps, if we ignore this call and do not even give it another thought, it will collapse of its own weight.

Steve,

Please, (PLEASE) stop using Politico as a source of 'news items'.

They are on par with the Washington Times, Faux News, or WorldNutDaily. They are not someone to trust. Many of their 'reporters' are in fact outlets for people like Drudge.

I've have posted in the past where it's clear their funding is through major American Right-Wing Donors. Google Glenn Greenwald and Poltico to find his Salon entry documenting this in great detail.

Going forward, whenever I read your site, I now gleam the mouse over the links. If I see a reference to Politico, I either don't trust it, or just stop reading the post altogether.

Cornyn (R-Texas) wants every Republican ... to start campaigning now.

They may as well. A "Not voting" is the same as a "No" vote. But I wonder just how excited their constituents are going to be about their "UNDO CHANGE" mantra. Let's hope President Connect-the-dots, Gov. Blame-the media and Joe the Plumber keep up their media tours.

The New York Times spent a lot of ink burying Caroline so it's not surprising that she fell to second.

Democratic leaders aren't exactly excited about the prospect of Roland Burris seeking a full term in 2010.

Neither am I. Every time I have heard him speak (granted, a pretty small sampling), I have been wholly unimpressed.

But then again, I live in California, and I can't say I'm stoked about Feinstein either...

Re Franken: Does anyone know, if those allegedly "double counted" ballots for him really were counted twice? I want Franken in and he'll be fun, but every honest person wants him there on condition of actually winning the vote.

Re: Cornyn

"And Mr. Cornyn said there was reason for Republicans to be optimistic: 48 percent of attack ads run by Democrats in 2008 featured references to President Bush, and with Mr. Bush out of the picture, Democrats will have no similar ammunition."

Sorry, Cornyn. All the Dems have to do is hit a simple theme -- hard, often, briefly and in easily understood terms:

"Remember: every time the Republicans gain power, they screw up the economy, break the government, raid the treasury for their cronies, and get us into a war. You're still cleaning up after their last round at bat. Do you want more of that?"
