STICK IT IN A TIME CAPSULE.... Watching Dick Cheney's latest "exit interview" with PBS's Jim Lehrer last night, it was hard not to marvel at the man's shameless, almost pathological, dishonesty. It was like seeing a master criminal at work -- you're offended by the conduct, but almost impressed by the skill.
In an exit interview with PBS's Jim Lehrer for the "NewsHour" airing tonight, Vice President Cheney repeats claims that Saddam Hussein worked with al-Qaeda. Asked if he made any mistakes in his eight years as V.P., Cheney only mentions underestimating the psychological harm Saddam had done to his own people. He said his administration bore no blame for the economic problem: "I think we had good economic policies, especially in the early years." And the terror threat was inherited because of the poor handling by previous presidents.
On polls showing he is overwhelmingly unpopular among the American people: "I don't buy that."
And he shrugged off a critical statement today by a key figure, who used to work under him -- she called the handling of one terror suspect as clear "torture."
I mean, really. What can one say to describe such spectacular mendacity? I could try to fact-check the interview, but when nearly every response to every question is either false or misleading, where does one begin? My friend Blue Girl said, "Not a single word of the interview had any basis in reality," which is about right.
We're talking about a vice president who still wants Americans to believe Saddam Hussein had "a relationship with al Qaeda."
The administration didn't torture; it overestimated the capacity of the Iraqi people; it received bad intelligence; Saddam had "access to weapons of mass destruction"; we "brought down" and "routed" the Taliban; the economic crisis has nothing to do with Bush's policies; Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and Democrats are the real culprits; and Joe Lieberman is a great "Democrat."
There's our reality, and there's Dick Cheney's reality. They bear few similarities.

What I love is, how the same people who took the good poll numbers they acheived early on (through lying) as a ringing endorsement of their shitty policies now claim not to believe the bad numbers they've wound up with have any bearing on actual public opinion.
Doublethink, anyone?

You know these so-called interviews are nothing but complete bullshit. These "journalists" that ask questions and then sit there and let these criminals answer with outright lies and other misleading crap are in some respect "cut from the same cloth". If they had any journalistic integrity at all they would look guys like Cheney in the eye, call them out on their bullshit and then throw them off the set telling them if they can't be truthful there's no need to speak. "Journalists" who let these bastards voice their lies and revisionist history talking points do nothing to inform the public.

Isn't a private reality, that shares little in common with most people's reality, a symptom of a psychopath? Or is it a sociopath?

Cheney missed his calling. Through a mistake in time of birth (born too late) he would have been an exceptional "Tin Man" who would have broken all sales records selling aluminum siding to poor suckers in the 50's. District manager material for sure.
The difference is (except for the occasional break-up of a marriage due to one spouse signing w/o the knowledge of the other), no one died from a shoddy siding job. He is directly responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Iraqis and at least 4100 americans, spying on the people he was entrusted to protect, torturing , sometimes resulting in the death of those tortured, and policies that led to the collapse of our economy while all the time gaining in wealth for himself and his cronies. Legacy smegasey, he belongs on death row for war Crimes and Treason...

" . . and there's Dick Cheney's reality."
You misspelled contempt.
I suppose there's something admirable, in a cold-bloodedly amoral way, in Cheney's absolute contempt for even the forms of civility in his demonstration of how power may be used by a man with no sense of political propriety.
He knows that his enemies have too much regard for their country to reveal the depth of that contempt, and he believes that the damnation of history is nothing compared to the exercise of power without restraint.

No, not that---and watch your mouth; my kids are in the room!
Each and every one of these treacherous, lying-through-the-teeth episodes by Bushylvanians and their "ardent supporters" (read: sycophantic leeches) is now on tape, and becomes a part of documented history. Think how valuable those videotaped boasts about waterboarding will be when the decrepit old sleazebag is brought before the International Court....

We were blessed to have strong patriots such as President Bush and VP Cheney at the helm when our country was attacked. Let's just hope that Obama (blessed be his name) will have at least half the guts.

Do you understand how weird this obsession with Cheney sounds to the rest of us ? Your guy won the election. A year from now, let's see how close his policies on Islamic terror are to Bush and Cheney's. I suspect you would have trouble getting a thou feeler gauge between them. Obama appears to be no fool, unlike many of his supporters. The campaign rhetoric will be the first to go. Any bets on when Gitmo closes ?

Surprised, No.
Why does anybody expect Bush, Cheney, or anybody from an outgoing administration to "fess up" to mistakes, or in the Bush administrations case, out right criminal activities? They are not going to do it. Never admit you were wrong. That is their montra.

"I don't buy that". There you have it: he and his fellow Repiglicans don't 'buy' actual reality. Like his pal Dan Bartlet said: "We are an empire now, and we DECIDE what REALITY is". In other words these evil shit stains create a 'reality' of make believe, of total fucking delusions, and it is that they BUY. They 'buy' their lies parading as 'reality'. And when the delusions are revealed for what they are what happens then ? They not only deny what has been exposed, but then invent yet more delusions to justify the denial of the delusions just exposed. Welcome to the last eight years that have totally destroyed our once great country because of the inherently delusional nature of what are called REPIGLICANS.

Closing Gitmo will be easy. What to do with the prisoners will be the hard part. There has been a lot of damage done, and it won't be easy to fix. But if I were you, I wouldn't be throwing around the word "fool".

"sounds to the rest of us" - The "rest of us" appears to be having problems filling quorums in their phone booth meetings.
How apt for one from a state settled under the power of land ownership and the gun. Homesteaders could be killed without justice being rendered against the killing crews of the ranchers. What little has changed in one of Wyoming's sons?

Who's "the rest of us?" Seen Cheney's approval numbers lately? No, of course you haven't; they weren't in the NY Post or Jerome Corsi's book.
Do you have any awareness of the seriousness and life expectancy of the damage this man has wrought? Once upon a time most Republicans pretended to value the constitution, the rule of law and human rights. There were lines of honor that many of you just wouldn't cross. Now guys like you don't even bother to fake it.

One needn't bother. It's like trying to prove the sky is blue. We know it's blue. We know Cheney's a lying sack of shit. Life's too short to engage in such fruitless endeavors. Why waste time trying to demonstrate the obvious?

Your guy won the election. A year from now, let's see how close his policies on Islamic terror are to Bush and Cheney's.
We have hints already: Obama changed from opposing the FISA upgrade to voting for it; his withdrawal from Iraq will be "responsible" and U.S. troops may be in Iraq "for some years" in order to ensure the continued stifling of al Qaeda; his first act will be to initiate "a study" on how to go about closing down the Gitmo prison (as though no one on his team has been thinking about this for the last year and a half?) Pretty soon we'll learn that he distinguishes between "torture" and "prisoner complaints" (aka "coercive interrogation techniques"); his extensive investigations into U.S. practices will disclose 3 or 4 more low-ranking people who crossed the line.

In a recent interview with Blitzer on CNN, Cheney said "he's operating in an area that's very difficult, very hard to get to, that he's not an effective leader at this stage; he just can't really engage his organization without coming out of whatever hole he's hiding in."
It struck me that we could say the same about Cheney over the past few years.
Thankfully, there is a date certain to the end of Cheney's reign of terror.

I use to like and respect Lehrer. I no longer do. He is just a facilitator for people like Bush and Cheney. He never puts them in difficult positions -- much too civilized for that. He lets them tell their lies without response. Its a class thing. He knows his place and what he needs to do to keep it.

I always thought that's what made Cheney so effective. He didn't just look good in debates versus Lieberman, whose politics are not going to allow him to stick up for an alternative, but even better against Edwards, who does have principles and is articulate about them. Cheney just makes it impossible to win a debate without using every moment you're allowed to speak complaining about him, which would never work, and Cheney can then shoo away a good argument in an instant with a lie and look superior in the process, like a pro putting the amateur in his place. It's scary.

Small consolation (and mostly luck) that these didn't happen on our soil. Keep in mind most of these happened on ally soil, so either U.S. intelligence has a lot of wholes in it, or we knew but didn't give two shits.
BTW in one recent al-qaeda attack in Iraq, 5 separate bombs went off killing 500 civilians.

This one. At the time there was much foot-stamping and table pounding undertaken in the name of denouncing it. But none of the nay-sayers ever got around to actually backing up their plaintive wails of inaccuracy.
Marler has a PhD in Statistics and denounced the study loudly. He promised to debunk it. I am still waiting.

I was also taken by Cheney's assertion that polls were irrelevant, that the measure of approval by the pollity is having been reelected: "That's what elections are for, Jim." I thought that noteworthy, as I wrote (blog whoring), the concept is willfully oblivious to the cost to McCain's attempt to get elected; had Bush-Cheney approval ratings been higher, Obama would not have won. That is what elections are for, and the Bush Threepeat was not reelected.
