BARACK OBAMA 2.0 GETS A NAME.... The LA Times reported the other day on the effort to turn Barack Obama's campaign structure into a post-election organization, taking advantage of the network and team of volunteers. Yesterday, the political operation, which boasts 13 million e-mail addresses, 4 million cellphone contacts, and 2 million active volunteers got a name and a broad mission.

"As president, I will need the help of all Americans to meet the challenges that lie ahead," Obama said in a video message e-mailed to supporters and reporters. "That's why I'm asking people like you, who fought for change during the campaign, to continue fighting for change in your communities."

The new group, called Organizing for America, will be a "special project" of the Democratic National Committee, according to Obama transition spokesman Ben LaBolt, and it appears to be the primary vehicle for issue advocacy for Obama's agenda. It will also be the keeper of Obama's e-mail list, which has 13 million addresses. [...]

The unveiling of Organizing for America came after months of consultation with the grass-roots network built by Obama during the campaign; more than 500,000 online surveys seeking guidance were filled out, and the group was created out of those recommendations. [...]

By keeping Organizing for America within the DNC, and running it with a small handful of campaign operatives, Obama is ensuring that the political machine, and political brand, he built during the campaign are preserved and protected over the coming years.

Marc Ambinder noted that Jennifer O'Malley Dillon, Jeremy Bird, and Mitch Stewart, all aides from the Obama campaign, will form the "triumvirate at the head of this new behemoth." (Also note, O'Malley Dillon will be the DNC's executive director, running the national party offices day to day.) Obama campaign manager David Plouffe is reportedly going to play a significant role in OFA.

Obama's message on the organization didn't go into too many details -- he talked about "building on the movement" and "fighting for change" -- but if the new organization can take full advantage of the grassroots political machine that was crafted throughout the presidential campaign, it's going to be a powerful tool for activism -- whether Congress likes it or not.

Man. That sounds familiar. Isn't there a similar organization somewhere behind the big Shaw's on Shelburne Road?

Don't know about the big Shaw's, but it certainly sounds familiar. Anybody note the resemblance between (Obama) Organizing For America and (Dean) Democracy For America? Seems to be a pattern drawn from the campaign: coopt, steal, marginalize, act like the whole thing's your idea. So far, DFA is still in business, with the mission of organizing around Progressive issues and reminding the winner that there is a Democratic wing to the Democratic Party. Somebody needs to do it. Wonder what OFA will be about?

I hope they realize that the continued support of a lot of us is contingent on the policies of the Obama administration. For example, if they ignore the evidence of Bush administration war crimes, they will lose some support.

With the mainstream media crowning Barack Obama king of America, starting after his inauguration (coronation), The White Houses official name will be changed. Read it at, http://stopthepresses2.blogspot.com/search/label/Obama

Random thought: Looking to the future, I wonder how much Team Obama will change the nature of the Democratic Party. Can the Rep. District grass roots process take hold, yield results, and become the template for my party's future?

Will supporters who seem to value a single issue over all others (and may get frustrated) still be able to actively support the president as he pushes for movement on other issues?

Additionally I am interested in how such a needed grass roots effort will be able to survive attempts at cooption. Corporate interested and entrenched politicians cannot like the possibility of such efforts. For them it is a zero sum game. So if they can’t strangle it in its crib, they will try to get inside and pilot it to their own benefit.

Interesting times.

Don't know about the big Shaw's...

Yep ericfree, That's were DFA is. Behind the Big Shaw's grocery store. It used to be Dean's campaign office.

Obama's message on the organization didn't go into too many details [...] -- Benen

Until I've seen how it works (or, even, *if*), I'll consider it as a simple maneuver to keep all those "13 million e-mail addresses, 4 million cellphone contacts, and 2 million active volunteers" on a slow-burner, in preparation for the '12 run. Clever? Certainly. Powerful? Show me :)

For all progressives who have expressed forebodings and misgiving about how Obama would govern once in office, OFA is your answer. This is where we create an independent left within the party mainstream, to press the progressive agenda. Tghe organization may be set up top-down, but it cannot operate other than horizontally, as has already been demonstrated by groups that have come together out of running across each other at MyBarackObama.

For those of you who - like me - celebrate that we have finally won the election of 1968, now is the time to remain active and build to achieve all those things we have wanted all these years in the fascist wilderness.

And for those who wonder just who it was who won the election, allow me to re-phrase President-elect Obama on Election night: "For those who wonder who won the election of 2008, Pete Seeger leading more than 100,000 people at the Lincoln Memorial in singing ALL the verses of "This Land is Your Land" (including the "subversive" ones) is your answer!"

(If you don't know what I am talking about, HBO is showing the concert free for everyone with cable tonight and tomorrow.)

Color me disappointed. I don't want to be part of the Democratic Party. I volunteered and worked hard to get Obama elected from primary to general. It was my expectation that this 'grassroots' movement would retain control at the roots. I want the email list the Obama Field Organizer promised me then back down on after the election of the folks in my community so I may organize them over local issues.
