MUST BE SOMETHING ABOUT DONUTS.... In May, Dunkin' Donuts unveiled an ad featuring television personality Rachael Ray, holding a latte, standing in front of blooming trees. Ray, however, also wore a scarf, which far-right blogs said was a keffiyeh. A lot of conservatives freaked out, accused Dunkin' Donuts of promoting "the mainstreaming of violence" (as Malkin put it), and the company quickly pulled the ad.
Now, some on the right have turned their attention to Krispy Kreme.
When I first noticed blog posts talking about far-right Krispy Kreme outrage, I assumed it was about the company's promotional campaign in England this week. In honor of the Obama inauguration, the chain will offer free cafe Americanos to anyone who walks up to the counter and says, "Yes, we can!" I figured, this kind of political favoritism would generate some complaints.
But that's not quite it. Some on the right are livid about the company's innocuous-sounding press release this week:
"Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc. (NYSE: KKD) is honoring American's sense of pride and freedom of choice on Inauguration Day, by offering a free doughnut of choice to every customer on this historic day, Jan. 20. By doing so, participating Krispy Kreme stores nationwide are making an oath to tasty goodies -- just another reminder of how oh-so-sweet 'free' can be."
Sounds good. A free-donut campaign to coincide with Inauguration Day celebrations seems like a tasty promotional gesture.
But Krispy Kreme used the "c" word, and the American Life League is outraged. "The unfortunate reality of a post-Roe v. Wade America is that 'choice' is synonymous with abortion access, and celebration of 'freedom of choice' is a tacit endorsement of abortion rights on demand," the group's president, Judie Brown said in a statement. ALL added, "President-elect Barack Obama promises to be the most virulently pro-abortion president in history. Millions more children will be endangered by his radical abortion agenda. Celebrating his inauguration with "'Freedom of Choice' doughnuts -- only two days before the anniversary of the Supreme Court decision to decriminalize abortion -- is not only extremely tacky, it's disrespectful and insensitive and makes a mockery of a national tragedy."
The Krispy Kreme press release was almost certainly referring to the freedom to choose presidential candidates, but no matter. The far-right fringe is on hair-trigger alert these days, and I doubt this will be the last hysterical overreaction.

If the far right boycotts Krispy Kremes, that's just more for the rest of us.

After 8 years of being being in the "off" position, it's almost refreshing to see the right wing outrage meter back on. If nothing else, the entertainment value is priceless.
If you want some real fun, go to a right wing blog and shout "FAIRNESS DOCTRINE" in the comments section.

The next thing you know, they'll be combing the text of the inaugural speech looking for instances where the letters C-H-O-I-C-E appear in that order in the same paragraph.

Economist Milton Friedman wrote a book and had a TV show called "Free to Choose". I didn't know he was really talking about abortion.

The right doesn't seem to need anyone's help to trivialize themselves. Even if the laws of chance provide them with a valid criticism or a good idea those will be lost in the constant white noise of right-wing bitching and bellyaching.

A "post-Roe v. Wade America" -- great, I've been waiting for that. And I thought "choice" was synonymous with elections.

You know, I think the right-wing subconsciously finds doughnuts too sexually suggestive. We all know how they feel about sex. Plus, doughnut purveyors are anti-abstinence only, too. They want people to eat all they want, now. Krispy Kreme even has that salacious big neon sign when the doughnuts are "hot".

Well, Really ...
"honoring American's sense of pride and freedom of choice..."
KK's PR department should have seen this coming. "Freedom of choice" is one of those politicized code-phrases, and has been for decades now. Decades. If they're so clueless as to not recognize this and re-word, say to "honoring American's sense of pride and freedom to select" the candidate/doughnut that they prefer - well, it's no surprise that the chain is in such dire economic straits.

The more we can do to help them behave freakishly and isolate themselves, the better.
And I want media! Just as the networks would film an entire gay pride parade and then show only a snippet of the Radical Faeries, I want close-ups of the bug-eyed frothing speakers-in-tongues, even if the rest of the congregation is conventional and slightly embarrassed.
"Right-wing freaks." "Radical Rightists." "Authoritarian crazies."
Let's FRAME this puppy!

Why is it that the most innocuous of terms is considered a mortal threat to the right's agenda, while they continue to apologies for the Rushes of the world with "get a sense of humor" and "he/she was just kidding"? Gee, the confederate flag has represented "state's rights" (that is, "We have the right to enslave people!") for over a century; and creeps like George Allen "apologizes" when "other people misinterpret my meaning"!!!

It's like unintentional self parody, and the wingnuts are too stupid or too dense to get the joke. They don't call them reactionaries for nothing. Malkin, literally, is their head cheerleader and when caught being 100% wrong on something that they were so furious about, they dont retract, they dont apologize, they just keep whistling on, pretending nothing happened.

One thing that immediately struck me upon reading this was the PC factor involved. We've been hearing forever about how we liberals are constantly trying to impose politically-correct standards on speech -- as in, when we object to racially-charged language. It's another source of endless outrage to rightwingers.
But what could exemplify a "PC" sort of hypersensitivity to language more than this? Who is mindlessly demanding PC language now?

That is really funny! Well, guess those folks don't get donuts.
OTOH, I have to admit I really dislike KK donuts. WAY too sweet. So although I think what they said is absolutely fine, I'd give it a pass.
Posted by: Clem on January 18, 2009 at 12:10 PM | PERMALINK
I thought it was the "making an oath to tasty goodies" that was the offending language. If you can make an oath to a bear claw, what weight does any oath carry?
It seems to me to be the trivializing of oaths and and besmirches the act of oathing overall. Why not just have Obama put his hand on a pain au chocolat and declare his commitment to a pastry in every bag.
At the end of the ceremony he could eat the pain au chocolat in the spirit of waste not - want not thus setting an example to the country to leave no crumb behind.

The shriller these guys play the language Nazis, the less resonance they will find.
Being obnoxious at a moment when the prevailing opinion in the mainstream is that your side has just screwed up mightily is a really bad PR move and there is only so much bullying people will tolerate before their default attitude becomes 'FU'.
Of course, none of this ever matters when you are in possession of the absolute truth.

As an avid aficionado of the Great and Glorious Doughnut God, I hereby celebrate my "freedom of choice" by choosing to buy a really big box of Krispy Kreme doughnuts---and also by choosing not to give even a bent farthing's notice to a whacked-out fringe group (ALL) that thinks it's a good idea to name themselves after a brand of laundry detergent.
On a more serious note, though, this isn't really about "abortion", per se; the subject of women's reproduction rights is merely a false front for the greater issue, whereby the Religious fRight will never be happy until we all surrender all of our "rights of choice" and submit to their self-invented superiority. I will "wage War most foul" upon them before that happens....

So, I got only one hit for reproduction health (number 4, by the way), but two hit related to education, including one about the right to choose which schoold to send your children.
But seriously, I think I found the REAL reason far righties dislike "choice" so much. Check out the definition in the wikipedia entry: "Choice consists of the mental process of thinking involved with the process of judging the merits of multiple options and selecting one..." Emphasis added by me.
Thinking? *scoff* We can't have that!!!!!

I must be the rare freak who took the ad literally. When I read "free doughnut of choice" I took it to mean you could have one of whatever type of doughnut you wanted, as opposed to the only free doughnuts offered being plain, or glazed, or powdered, etc. Seriously, how does one go from doughnuts to abortion? Is Krispy Kreme developing a tasty new RU-486 Doughnut and debuting it on Inauguration Day or something?
Posted by: Keori on January 18, 2009 at 1:44 PM | PERMALINK
OMG, wait til they hear about "Choice" beef. If they can't eat doughnuts and they can't eat red meat, what's left for the wingnuts to survive on? Their own bile?
"Choice", BTW, is the second highest grade of beef, just below "Prime."
OMG, "Choice" is, therefore "Sub-Prime." All those mortgages were the fault of the abortionists, too.
See? Right wing "logic" is easy...

Maybe one result of our victory will be that, in a few months or so, groups like these will start being treated with the respect they deserve, which is practically none. Even the better known groups like FotF and Operation Rescue and the like take views that are rejected by the substantial majority of American Christians -- not to mention either Americans or Christians as a whole.
Maybe we'll stop treating pronouncements like these as 'serious news stories' and instead consider them as hysterically funny comments from the fringe.
I'm not, btw, denying that Bush's poor Constitutional 'sanitary practices' let a number of clerical cockroaches establish nests 'behind the baseboards' -- maybe most dangerously in the military. But I think 'bombs' of laughter and derision are the best insecticides. (Don't treat Barton as a 'reputable historian' -- even when you are denying he is -- by solemnly refuting his absurdities. Instead, make his defenders ashamed of supporting someone that ridiculous.)
Imagine if Krispy Kreme ran a promotion offering a drawing for free circus tickets for anyone who'd sign a statement agreeing with the protestors, since they obviously enjoy clowns.
Don't ignore them, they are too funny for that. But, for example, Steve, use your 3:00 coffee break for a regular feature where you would nominate one or two of the silliest pronunciamentos from the Right in the past 24 hours, and throw the floor open to other nominations, encouraging silliness rather than paranoia as a response.

Though flagging politically, the Republican party continues to outdo itself in the areas of phony outrage, invented controversy and absurd conclusions. I don't know how liberals could have conversations without Republicans around to explain what we really mean.
The spectrum of their explanations is truly amazing when you consider that within one month they have explained the "harmless parody" of a CD of mean spirited songs including "Barack the Magic Negro", while today explaining the insidious nature of free donuts.

It's not the donuts; it's the *holes* that have their longjohns in a twist. Has everyone forgotten about the palpitations they had over the split-tailed mermaid at Starbucks?
And, independent thinker, @13:18,
It's not only "choice", per se; it's the lethal combination of "choice" and "freedom". While each, by itself, is relatively benign, put them together and ka-booom! Like dynamite (or plastique) and one of those starter thingies -- perfectly safe to handle, independently. But highly explosive when combined and activated.

While I am only about the millionth person to mention this-- the right wing has become immune to satire. If 20 years ago, say, a satirist had imagined a political landscape where political pundits attacked Rachel Ray's scarf of a free doughnut of your choice, it would have seemed too over-the-top to be successful satire.
What amazes me is people like Michelle Malkin et al. can say this sort of thing over and over and over and still find an audience. This is a phenomenon that requires some serious examination.
Posted by: Jake on January 19, 2009 at 9:12 AM | PERMALINK
Even assuming that "freedom of choice" here does refer to reproductive choice, it would seem just as likely to outrage reproductive rights activists by trivializing the significant personal decision-making that goes into choosing abortion or adoption or parenting, as if women (and men) making those choices do so as flippantly as they would choose a donut flavor.... We (radicals, activists, feminists) could just as easily be outraged about the way capitalism has coopted the power of choice to be merely part of a marketing campaign, equating product diversity with human freedom. And maybe we should be so.
