Irony Is Dead

Yesterday, various bloggers, including Steve, posted a wonderful YouTube video of Pete Seeger singing 'This Land Is Your Land'. I hope you watched it then, since it's no longer available: HBO has taken it down (h/t). If you click the video, you get the following message:

"This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by Home Box Office, Inc."

As Steve noted, Seeger included the two "radical" verses, which are often omitted. I think that Seeger et al changed the words somewhat in the performance, but guess what? I can't check. Here's the original version:

As I was walkin' -- I saw a sign there

And that sign said No Trespassin'

But on the other side it didn't say nothin!

Now that side was made for you and me!

In the squares of the city -- in the shadow of the steeple

Near the relief office I see my people

And some are grumblin' and some are wonderin'

If this land's still made for you and me.

Whatever you might think about No Trespassin' signs generally, it's a bit much to put them on video of a concert put on for the people, to celebrate our new President and our country. But putting them on this song in particular?

Irony is dead.

You can watch the entire concert for free at:

I, in fact, just did.

You're not wrong about the irony part, though.

I know the line as:

"As they stood there hungry, I stood there wondering, is this land made for you and me?"

Posted by: Tom Stewart on January 19, 2009 at 3:40 PM | PERMALINK

memo to next inauguration team: When selling the cable rights to the people's party, make sure it stays in public domain.

Posted by: martin on January 19, 2009 at 3:41 PM | PERMALINK

Sometimes the "No trespassing" line is sung as "Private property". In fact I think that may be the way that Woody originally wrote it. Even more ironic.

Posted by: pat on January 19, 2009 at 3:43 PM | PERMALINK

They did sing it as "Private Property."

BTW, Hilzoy, what's your problem with watching it on HBO.com?

Posted by: Cal Gal on January 19, 2009 at 3:46 PM | PERMALINK

Anyone who watched it in the morning, and has not closed their browser, probably still has it in their cache. On a Mac, it would be someplace like

/var/folders/[gibberish]/TemporaryItems/FlashTmp0

You're looking for a file that is about 11596187 bytes long.

If you copy it someplace else, and put a ".flv" suffix on it, you can play it with (among other things) VLC (available from www.videolan.org).

I got this information from

Fuck HBO. I am a subscriber and have been looking for an excuse to cancel.

Just got one.

Posted by: jharp on January 19, 2009 at 3:47 PM | PERMALINK

The HBO video doesn't play on my mac. I downloaded and installed flip4mac, and it still won't play.

Funny.

There are already other versions up on youtube.

HBO will never control this, and they will only make themselves look bad trying.

jharp has it right: when you are annoyed by one of the media whores, cancel your subscription. That is the language they understand. Complaining to them or about them with no significant action to support your position sends them the message that you do not really care. You are more attracted to their content than to your principles. If you need an excuse to take action, you won't have to look too far. And, you will save a lot of money, which can be used to do some real good in the world.

OK, I had to read that last paragraph twice to catch your drift.

Posted by: AlphaLiberal on January 19, 2009 at 4:01 PM | PERMALINK

I still have it on our DVR. Pete did change Woody's words a bit yesterday.

Posted by: Okie on January 19, 2009 at 4:03 PM | PERMALINK

The HBO version doesn't work on my Mac.

Posted by: hilzoy on January 19, 2009 at 4:14 PM | PERMALINK

I fail to see what all the whining is about. HBO produced the video, right? They own the rights to it, right?

It's not as if they are making somebody take down a video they made with their cell phone or video camera.

It isn't as though Pete Seeger is somehow important to our democracy.

Posted by: DR on January 19, 2009 at 4:17 PM | PERMALINK

st john "media whore" good term

one reason tha I will now subscribe to HBO

Posted by: Ted76 on January 19, 2009 at 4:21 PM | PERMALINK

DR - HBO apparently (?) was given the exclusive right to film the event, so there are no comparable videos available. HBO did not exactly pay for the venue or the performers, and the concert was public.

Posted by: Rachel Q on January 19, 2009 at 4:25 PM | PERMALINK

Furthermore, I don't think you could say that "Irony is dead" for this, unless Pete Seeger was the one asking it to be taken down.

Posted by: DR on January 19, 2009 at 4:25 PM | PERMALINK

"one reason that I will not subscribe to HBO"

Posted by: Ted76t on January 19, 2009 at 4:27 PM | PERMALINK

The inauguration is a celebration of our Constitution, which does indeed explicitly protect intellectual (and other) property rights. This might be an irony, but it is a delicious irony, to be savored. Even Pete Seeger's property rights are protected, though he has nominally espoused a governmental form that would have the right to expropriate his home (hand built by him) for its own purposes without recompense. Another sweet irony to savor.

Posted by: MatthewRMarler on January 19, 2009 at 4:31 PM | PERMALINK

Those of you with the free VideoLAN Client, you should be able to follow these directions to save a local copy of the video. I haven't found a way to make it download faster than real-time, but if you were already going to watch it, or don't mind letting it download for a couple of hours unattended, it's one route.

Posted by: mwr on January 19, 2009 at 4:31 PM | PERMALINK

"HBO did not exactly pay for the venue or the performers, and the concert was public."

Well, If the concert was public, how could HBO get the exclusive rights to it? What would the point of getting exclusive rights even be if they weren't allowed to keep other people from using their video?

If you have a beef with this, it should be with the people who gave them exclusive rights.

It's kind if silly to cancel your HBO subscription because of this. Cancel your HBO subscription if it doesn't provide you $15 of entertainment each month.

Thanks to "Tooble" I have the vid of Seeger, his grandson and Springsteen on my Mac. Anyone want it/want to see it? Just get in touch, and I'm happy to share it.

Posted by: Michael Cox on January 19, 2009 at 4:35 PM | PERMALINK

As it turns out, the copyright to "This Land Is Your Land" is currently owned by people who like to sue.

Posted by: DonBoy on January 19, 2009 at 5:04 PM | PERMALINK

The inauguration is a celebration of our Constitution

No, Marler, the inauguration is a celebration of a victory over dishonest conservative toads like you.

Shame on you.

Posted by: Gregory on January 19, 2009 at 5:24 PM | PERMALINK

So what was wrong with Springsteen's mike? I couldn't hear his voice at all.

I did hear those words, but I didn't hear the word trespass, seems like a more drawn out description than trespassing.

The video is available. Not HBO version.

Sorry about the multiple comments. But why does my name not come up as a link?

Posted by: cheflovesbeer on January 19, 2009 at 5:54 PM | PERMALINK

I just watched a version of the same youtube pulled from german TV.

Won't link to it, but you can find it by searching Youtube for pete seeger + this land.

Posted by: justathought on January 19, 2009 at 6:09 PM | PERMALINK

But why does my name not come up as a link?

cheflovesbeer - I don't think the URL field ever worked here. But it used to be that if you filled in the "Email Address" field, anyone could click on your name at the end of a comment and see your e-mail address. In about Oct '08, they turned that feature off.

It does look like you got your links posted. I find that the comment software here doesn't like multiple links in a single comment. Sometimes it works. Sometimes not. Kinda frustrating.

"...A great big sign there, said "private property". But on the other side, it didn't say nothing. That side was made for you and me" - is how I heard it.

Posted by: MissMudd on January 19, 2009 at 6:33 PM | PERMALINK

Well, I'll revise my previous comment based on President-elect Obama's election night special:

"For those of you who wonder who won the election of 2008, the fact that Pete Seeger could lead more than 100,000 people at the Lincoln Memorial in singing ALL the verses of This Land is Your Land (including the "subversive" ones), and then have the replay blocked as being the private copyrighted property of HBO is your answer!!"

Meet the new boss... same as the old boss...

Won't get fooled again?

Posted by: TCinLA on January 19, 2009 at 7:29 PM | PERMALINK

I know the second "radical" verse it to be:

In the shadow of the steeple I saw my people,
By the relief office I seen my people;
As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking
Is this land made for you and me?

Also:
[...]
As they stood there hungry, I stood there whistling
This land was made for you and me.

Thanks cheflovesbeer. I was so bummed that I couldn't watch that video. Pete Seeger is a hero of our time. He is democracy. And young people rock with him. Thanks for the youth of the world. Without them where would we be? Damn.

And Oh. to DR. Fuck You

Gregory: No, Marler, the inauguration is a celebration of a victory over dishonest conservative toads like you.

That too, but my line is a paraphrase of on of the lines from JFK's inaugural address: "What we celebrate is not a victory of party, ... ."

Posted by: MatthewRMarler on January 19, 2009 at 10:30 PM | PERMALINK

my line is a paraphrase of on of the lines from JFK's inaugural address

Yes, but it's a dumb paraphrase: For all the bipartisan trappings, once again -- as you admit -- this inauguration is a celebration of a victory over dishonest conservative toads like you. From the inaugural podium, Obama is watching what rats haven't abandoned the stinking ship of movement conservatism clining to its foundering stern.

You aren't half as clever as you think you are, Marler, and what's worse, you've put what cleverness you do have in service of the dishonest defense of the Bush Administration's mendacity, incompetence, tyrrany and corruption.

Bottom line: people are sick of conservative bullshit, and you have nothing else to offer. No one mistakes you for an honest commentator, Marler. Shame on you.

Posted by: Gregory on January 20, 2009 at 8:41 AM | PERMALINK

I saw it on the Internet, so it must be true: HBO has a time-limited broadcast right. Event footage would thereafter (one assumes) revert to the public domain. Hey, why not check change.gov?
