COUNTRY FIRST.... About a week ago, former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell, now seeking the chairmanship of the Republican National Committee, explained his opposition to an economic stimulus bill. "[I]t could create a major electoral advantage for Democrats at taxpayer expense," Blackwell said. "That would be unacceptable."

Rush Limbaugh is apparently thinking along the same lines. (via memeorandum)

Obama's plan would buy votes for the Democrat [sic] Party, in the same way FDR's New Deal established majority power for 50 years of Democrat [sic] rule, and it would also simultaneously seriously damage any hope of future tax cuts. It would allow a majority of American voters to guarantee no taxes for themselves going forward.... Put simply, I believe his stimulus is aimed at re-establishing "eternal" power for the Democrat [sic] Party....

All of this is reminiscent of the memo Bill Kristol wrote for congressional Republicans in 1993, when he insisted that the GOP had to block any efforts to reform healthcare, because if Clinton and Democrats were successful, it would "give the Democrats a lock on the crucial middle-class vote." What helps Americans is nice, but the real concern is blocking any policies that they perceive might give Democrats an edge.

Remember that Republican slogan from not too long ago? "Country first"?

And wasn't that the Republican strategy for the last eight years? If low taxes were America's top priority, Sarah Palin would be queen of the Senate today.

wait. you actually believed that?

"And wasn't that the Republican strategy for the last eight years?"

No,no,no,no, republicans don't really want tax cuts. They REALLY want tax cuts for the upper 10%. In the last 8 yrs., the middle class was thrown scraps, while the rich were getting the steak.

Hmmm. Obama and FDR...what do these two have in common?

Oh, yeah, that. They're both Democrats who were elected after Republicans had created a smoking crater where the economy used to be.

Hey, Rush - if this type of thing worries you, maybe the way to keep it from happening again would be to, you know, not support policies that create a smoking crater where the economy used to be.

With her 58 million votes wouldn't Sarah Palin Be the leading republican, thus the Leader of the republican party???

From Racket Rush--that parboiled pimple on the ass of the body politic:

"Obama's plan would buy votes for the Democrat [sic] Party..."

So by the same logic, are we to infer that tax cuts for the rich will encourage hefty contributions to Republican owners of big overcoats with secret pockets?

No,no,no,no, republicans don't really want tax cuts. They REALLY want tax cuts for the upper 10%.

We're talking about degrees, and specific targeting, though the lowest wage earners and low to middle income people whose income came from cap. gains did benefit. I would also argue that the Republican strategy was permanent, while Obama's intention is not.

Don't you mean "Republicker [sic] owners"?

Anal cyst claims "It would allow a majority of American voters to guarantee no taxes for themselves..." when we all know that's a lie because of FICA which is charged total of about 15% per employee at all income levels, about the same as the unwarranted special rate for capital gains ...
Lying POS.

"Country first"?

There's no contradiction if the Party is the country, and the country is the party.

It's easier to follow if you remember that the GOP is the only major Leninist parliamentary party in the west.

This is why the Republicans are screeching that Obama is "the most dangerous president ever."

Why, he might raise rich people's taxes back to what they were under Ronald Reagan! Oh, the horror.

The Republican Party is so caught up in the "permanent campaign" that they've lost all sense of what they stand for. They've already started the scorecard for 2010 and 2012. They are so wrapped up in the "who's ahead; who's behind" mindset, and the manipulation of information and sound bites that they fail to realize that they have no believable, cohesive message. They are so out of touch with the "real America" that they don't even recognize their own racism, sexism, and ethnic and religious prejudices. Either that, or they are so arrogant that they make no apologies for the constant parade of Republicans Behaving Badly.
McCain rings just as hollow as Boehner, Cantor, and Mitchell do--sometimes worse. McCain spent months smearing Obama as a terrorist's pal, a socialist, unpatiotic, foreign/unAmerican, unqualified, a celebrity, and an elitist, yet last week he showed up on Larry King to brag about what a "resepectable" campaign he ran. Short memory, John? McCain hyped himself as a hero and a "maverick" but look where he's standing less than a week into the new administration--kissing up to obstructionist-in-chief Boehner. Yeah, McCain, the "straightalker" has now reversed his thinking on the expansion of broadband service. He and the rest of the Repubs' vision of the future extends only so far as the next election. McCain is looking for a way back by proving himself to be one of the boys, sucking up to the GOP powers-that-be who remain in office after their sound thumpin' in November. Country first, my a$$!

What they really mean is "Politics first!" everything else is simply a means to their self-centered, hubristic end: "All for me and none for thee".

Why should anyone listen to a toad when we elected a prince?

Posted by: nunya on January 25, 2009 at 4:51 PM | PERMALINK

Obama and the Dems are trying to save the middle class from obliteration.

Rush and the Repubs are trying to destroy the middle class on behalf of the 'Supply-side' Rich.

So, yeah, of course he'd be against Obama. That's about as honest as Rush gets. If he was really honest he'd say he's for destroying the middle class on behalf of the Rich.

As in "Get rid of the Country First"? Country first...pick Palin to be VP.

Hypocrisy is a principle with the republican party.

They do nothing that is for the good of the country...Nothing. Everything is done for political gain only. They have never sacrificed anything and stand "for" nothing...only "against" things. The 'very wealthy' and Religious leaders (which amounts to the same thing most of the time) will not lose much of anything iif our economy collapses. In fact they stand to gain more power. This is why they want democrats to fail even if it means the collapse of our economy...they will not be hurt by it.

A crucial element to all of this is that the propaganda arm or the super rich is in full swing.

Americans remain as stupid as ever and will be all too willing to blame and victimize others if they can't get back on the the economic crack pipe the neolibs and Bush were making available at every neighborhood mall.

Even NPR can't contain their glee in pretending Obama is just like Bush and will now see the light. Even my somewhat enlightened uber progressive friend was buying the bullshit Juan Williams was spilling on the airwaves yesterday that Obama will now have to see the light and come around to the way Bush saw things.

It's a time for sacrifice and no one especially the media is willing to sacrifice anything.

Thank you for the notations of Comedian limpbow's bastardization of the Democratic Party's name. However, as turn about is fair play, from now it should be called the Republic (sic) Party...insert your pervert of the month from the Republic Party, beginning with the Viagra ridden, Dominican Boy partying Comedian limpbow herself!

Why do Bill Kristol, Rush Limbaugh and Ken Blackwell hate Joe the American Worker? Oh, right, because they'de have to pay more taxes on their 10k sq feet houses that they live in. Waste of a carbon footprint if you ask me.
