The federal government is supposed to issue new rules about debt levels for students in for-profit colleges. In the meantime, the states are working on their own regulations.
There arent nearly enough counterterrorism experts to instruct all of Americas police. So we got these guys instead.

BLASTS FROM THE PAST.... We all say and do things we regret in hindsight. Some are more embarrassing than others. Take for example, Commerce Secretary-designate Judd Gregg's votes to eliminate the Commerce Department.
Gregg's 1995 votes were cast for the fiscal 1996 budget resolution, a nonbinding blueprint that outlined the GOP's fiscal priorities after Republicans won full control of Congress for the first time in 40 years.
The Senate version of the controversial measure envisioned spending cuts of more than $960 billion, almost half of it from Medicare and Medicaid. Democratic efforts to amend it were uniformly rebuked by a united GOP majority on the Budget Committee. [...]
Gregg also fought President Bill Clinton's efforts to increase funding for the Commerce Department to administer the 2000 census. Indeed, Gregg's commitment to basic functions of the department has been questioned at times.
Since of the days of Gingrich's so-called "revolution," Gregg has come around, and has actually voted to fund the Commerce Department. Indeed, if he didn't support its continued existence, Gregg probably wouldn't have given up his Senate seat to head the cabinet agency. Still, the fact that he twice backed eliminating the department altogether is kind of amusing in light of today's announcement.
And speaking of embarrassing blasts from the past, this 1986 ad from Tom Daschle looks pretty humiliating today.
For those who can't watch clips online, the ad shows then-Rep. Daschle driving around D.C. in his beat up 1971 Pontiac, not like those politicians who drive around in "BMWs and limos." The narrator tells the viewer, "[A]fter 15 years and 238,000 miles, Tom Daschle still drives his old car to work every day. Maybe he's sentimental -- or just cheap. Whatever the case, isn't it too bad the rest of Washington doesn't understand that a penny saved ... is a penny earned."

Per the NYT's, Tom Daschle withdrew his nomination. About time.

Daschle's ad is still true - he doesn't "drive around" in a limo or BMW - he's driven. And he's still saving pennies - someone else picked up the tab, and he didn't pay the taxes.
These people do truly live in an alternate universe, with their underpaid au pairs and house cleaners for whom they don't pay worker's comp or payroll taxes, lawn services provided by workers who have to avoid the INS. I'm not meaning to sound like Lou Dobbs - my concern is the exploitation and the arrogant attitude that the laws only apply to those outside of exalted political circles. Obama needs to keep his word and help us onto a more ethical path. To that end, the confirmation process is very helpful - maybe a few more powerhouse wannabes will give better instructions to their accountants, and, just maybe, be less exploitative in their hiring and management of domestic help.

Well, it's pretty clear that Daschle didn't know the difference between a penny saved and a penny earned. The latter is taxable income.

Amusing? What do you do for entertainment? Shove bamboo under your fingernails?

Who exactly won the election? Can someone remind me please?

"At least Daschle actually drove the car; Fred Thompson's red pickup truck was as phony a campaign prop as George Bush's Texas pig ranch."
Apparently Thompson still owns that truck. That doesn't seem phony to me if he still owns the thing.

I was pretty amazed at the high level of low clubby carelessness . It is one thing to tip the top waitress at a restaurant , but for her to pick cash at the Safeway Piggly Wiggly Stop and Shop , for being able to "Dish" ?
Pah leeze .
The saintly leader (Godfather) is then driven to pick up the cash ?
I truly despise what Thune and company did to Daschle and Cleland , but Tom Tom ! Make the privilege work for everyone or make the STUPID stop .
Thank you

I hope Gregg's vote on the amendment to put more infrastructure spending in the stimulus bill has sunk his chances to be appointed to Commerce.
Unless, of course, there's a Republican in NH who could be counted on as a reliable Obama vote. In that case, get him to Commerce ASAP.
