FAR-RIGHT TARGETS DOJ NOMINEES.... Some of President Obama's most impressive personnel moves have come at the Justice Department, most notably with some lower-profile offices, like the Office of Legal Counsel and the Solicitor General. The team Obama has put together couldn't represent a more thorough and encouraging break from the Bush era.

Naturally, conservative activists are livid.

Christian conservatives are challenging President Barack Obama's picks for top Justice Department positions, charging that past clients like Playboy taint their resumes. [...]

As [A.G. Eric Holder] waits for confirmation of his top aides, many on the religious right are questioning the nominee's backgrounds, saying they have promoted far left, pro-abortion, pro-gay policies.

"[David Ogden, Obama's pick for deputy attorney general] has been an activist in the support of a right to pornography, a right of abortion and the rights of homosexuals," said Patrick Trueman, a former Justice Department official during the first Bush presidency who is now in private practice.

"It isn't so much that he's represented pornographers or that he's been a porn attorney, but it's his world view, and his world view reflects President Obama's world view," said Trueman, echoing criticism from conservative activist groups like the American Family Association and Focus on the Family.

Describing Ogden as a "porn attorney" is a little over the top. Among his many clients has been Playboy magazine, and Ogden represented librarians resisting Internet-filtering software.

Of course, it's not just Ogden. The right is targeting Dawn Johnsen at the OLC because she's worked with NARAL. Thomas Perrelli, nominated to be the Associate Attorney General, is drawing fire because he represented Terry Schiavo's husband. Solicitor General nominee Elena Kagan and Tony West, nominated to head the Civil Division, are also drawing fire.

Tom Minnery, a vice president at Focus on the Family, told the AP, "They take our breath away the more we learn about these people. This is left-wing politicization of the Justice Department. This is not a Justice Department that looks like America."

What's more, these far-right activists have an ally on the Hill -- speaking on the Senate floor this week, Sen. Jeff Sessions (R) of Alabama said, "We don't need the Department of Justice to become a liberal bastion."

At this point, there's no reason to think the right-wing whining will make any difference. All of the DoJ nominees are expected to be confirmed. But their apoplexy is nevertheless a good sign that the president has picked the best people for their roles at Justice.

Does Jeff Sessions really want a Department of Justice that railroads his own governor? Really?

I concur: Having the religious right ranting against you is ALWAYS proof that you're on the right track!

"[David Ogden, Obama's pick for deputy attorney general] has been an activist in the support of a right to pornography, a right of abortion and the rights of homosexuals."

Yeah? So what?

These jackasses aren't setting the agenda any more.

"But their apoplexy is nevertheless a good sign that the president has picked the best people for their roles at Justice."

If that were the case, why not pick Michael Moore or Cindy Sheehan? Apoplexy is a distraction, not an indicator of competence.

This is left-wing politicization of the Justice Department.

Even granting the premise, which I don't, these shitheads had an opportunity to complain about politicization of the Justice Department under Bush and took a pass. Why listen to them now?

This is not a Justice Department that looks like America.

Bullshit. Should we remind the esteemed vice president at Focus on the Family how popular pr0n is in America?

Of course the far-right was always going to do this.

But with Obama now injured, they smell blood in the water, so look out, the crazies will realy bring it on.

And, yes, I'm sure Obama will try to meet them halfway.

Remind me again who won in November?

That's right, motherfuckers!

Silly us! How did we forget that Americans voted so overwhelingly to have the country dragged further to the right?

Isn't is true that having these hateful, right-wing punks hide behind the skirts of the term "family" in itself some sort of pornography?

"and his world view reflects President Obama's world view"

As if President Obama's nominee should reflect some other "world view"? Good grief. Elections have consequences, thank god.

Does Jeff Sessions really want a Department of Justice that railroads his own governor? Really?

When said Gov is a democrat who was looking to move up to the Senate, you bet your ass that's what Jeff Sessions wants.

"his world view reflects President Obama's world view"

Obviously a disqualifier to work in the DOJ under an Obama administration.

"This is not a Justice Department that looks like America."

At least not like a right-wingnut amerika.

"We don't need the Department of Justice to become a liberal bastion."

The hell we don't!!!

"But their apoplexy is nevertheless a good sign that the president has picked the best people for their roles at Justice."

Right on the mark Steve.

Obviously, the rethugs & their religious windbags & their corporate media echo chamber know that we need a DOJ that will write legal opinions to allow the president to ignore the Constitution & to ignore laws. Worked great under Bush!

"Tom Minnery, a vice president at Focus on the Family, told the AP, "They take our breath away the more we learn about these people."

Focus on the Family was out of breath anyway.

Settle down, D. Steve merely said this was a 'good sign'. Not the single most-important criteria by which to judge competence.

I love how when members of the right wing say 'looks like America' they really mean 'white + male + Christian like me.'

"This is not a Justice Department that looks like America."

Sadly that is too true. But it is a Justice Department that looks like what America should be, a land of the free and definitely not the home of the torturers.

I called it. Long before Obama was elected, I assumed that Republicans would scream that the next president would be "politicizing" the Justice Department every time they try to uproot Bush people and/or policies. It serves two purposes: it spreads the utter falsehood that all presidents do the vile manipulation of government toward political ends that Bush did, and sets the stage for the next Republican president to politicize the DoJ all over again.

What those right-wing idiots don't seem to understand is that an attorney is not automatically attributed with all views of each client he/she represents. (This would mean that Tim McVeigh's lawyers support terrorism.) The only grounds for criticism is if the representation provided by an attorney is of poor quality or unprofessional. The bottom line is that the nominees must be effective advocates for their clients: the American people. Conservative activists properly invite scorn and ridicule for expressing such misguided and frankly ignorant opinions.

With the tenor and substance of their attacks conservatives are simply illustrating how politicized and doctrinaire the DOJ had been under Bush, where it became an auxillary in the culture wars of the radical right.

It's all part of the War on Sex. Some people just have problems with sexuality, to the point that they're willing to make the rest of us go through huge contortions just to buy some comfort for their maladjustment.

I read with astonishment today that prosecutors in various parts of the country are leveling child pornography charges at teenagers who dare to send each other nude pictures via cellphone. This includes situations that are entirely consensual, between minors. Obviously releasing such pictures into the unpredictable social world of teens is an activity with some distinct downsides, but the lifetime baggage that comes with sex offender charges makes these cases truly questionable in terms of net benefit.

Meanwhile, the more deeply taboo sexual matters become, the more power is handed to genuine sex offenders, driven as they are in large part by perceptions of what's offensive and forbidden.

I'm so sorry to hear that. I think you'd better husband what you still have... Hold your breath, don't expend it. A little longer... A couple of hours more...

And while you're doing that, I have a couple of questions; no, don't say anything, just nod your head, OK? Cremation ? Or burial? Lilies? Or carnations?
