COLEMAN'S FALL FROM GRACE.... The combination of arrogance, desperation, and sanctimony is never a good combination, especially in politicians in the public eye. Take Norm Coleman, for example.

Coleman is adept, somewhat too adept, his critics might say, at skillfully tailoring his message to his audience, and that skill set was on full display Friday.

On Friday, Coleman made the media rounds with radio interviews that included conservative nationally syndicated radio talk show host Mike Gallagher ... an unyielding fiscal and religious conservative, who hosts one of the Top 10 rated talk shows in the country. [...]

When asked about the recount and how it is affecting him personally, Coleman said he starts every day with a prayer and that he knows "God wants me to serve."

As DHinMI asked yesterday, "If God wants him to serve, why didn't God give him more votes?"

I though Messianic complexes were limited to Christians. Guess not.

Odd thing for a Brooklyn boy to say.

Yup--that's why God is uncovering all of Coleman's illegal-gift scandals. He wants him to serve about 10 to 20.

Obviously, Coleman is just like Moses. And before Coleman can lead the chosen people of Minnesota to the Promised Land (western Wisconsin, I think), God had to first harden the hearts of the Minnesota electorate.

Or maybe the passage that truly applies is more like, "Thou art a stiff-necked people" as relates to Coleman's stubborn refusal to accept defeat.

Norm Coleman is on a mission from God. (h/t Elwood Blues)

Coleman is clearly worried about money, as his sham marriage to his slutty faux actress wife will be down the tubes if he can't keep her supplied in bling. The Minneapolis Star-Tribune had an article a few weeks ago about how Coleman refinanced his house something like 15 times in the past 10 years. Expect Coleman to get indicted soon for taking illegal bribes and kickbacks. He is lower than a snake's belly.

God wants him to serve all right - 10 to 20 years of hard time!

So, if the court doesn't give the Senate seat to Coleman then will the Mississippi turn into blood? Will it start raining frogs?

Posted by: tomeck on February 10, 2009 at 11:42 AM | PERMALINK

I hope I'm not the only one that's noticed: Every day that this thing drags on, the number of people who voted for Coleman and now wish they hadn't---gets bigger.

You also have to realize that Coleman is cherry-picking what God told him. Here's the complete, unaltered message (redacted segments highlighted in bracketed italics):

"I want you to [be] serve[d up as a banquet to the jackals]."

Looks to me like God's going to get his wish. He's a very patient type of fellow, y'know....

And he's in Minnesota! That sucks! Why couldn't Vitter or some other idiot downriver of me have had this conversation with god?!

As I just posted elsewhere:
Norm is right: God does want him to serve; in fact, God wants all of us to serve.

For example, Norm could:
Help at food banks, homeless shelters, soup kitchens.
Help build Habitat homes.
Become a SMART reader volunteer.
Use his brains and experience to serve on boards to influence businesses and government to intervene in policy to help the less fortunate, children, etc.
I'm sure we could all add more.

But Norm can't serve as Senator because he was defeated at the polls. God doesn't like liars and cheaters.

As my pastor reminded our congregation on Sunday, those who are in a position of power are really at the bottom of the totem pole. They are less important than those they serve. Norm seems to have forgotten this as he is trying desparately to hang onto his power and prestige. It's not about him, it's about the people of MN.

No Norm, God wants you to serve up a nice hot dish up there in Stillwater. You really should listen better.

Maybe Franken should just call for a complete revote? I bet he wins 75-25.

Posted by: Northzax on February 10, 2009 at 12:18 PM | PERMALINK

God almost certainly wants Coleman to serve.

I'm thinking he should serve 3 to 7 years for his various crimes.

foot fault!

Nate Silver put it nicely when he pointed out that Coleman was beaten once by a wrestler, won his Senate seat only because his opponent had been killed in a plane crash, and was beaten this time by a comedian.

His life appears to be a mess right now--serious debts, a sham marriage, investigations re corruption--so I hope it gives him comfort to think that God wants him to serve. All the rest of us are praying to God to please, please, please, let the joke that is the recount trial end and let Franken take that Senate seat!

Oy.

Can we get back in reality. Norm Coleman can't stop this even if he wanted to. That one Senate vote has caused billions of dollars of change in the stimulus package.

I suspect there is a pile of gold waiting for Norm at the end of the rainbow and the pile gets larger with each uncounted Senate vote.

Someone is funding this clown (Romney) and those funds are probably near limitless. Norm has become the punchline, the Katherine Harris of Minnesota. He thinks they are going to slingshot him into greatness, but we all know when this is done and the Feds start pushing, he will become an obscure trivia question.

And that magical pot of gold will never be located.

Example of Norm Coleman, serving:

"Would you like fries with that?"

Posted by: Mikado on February 10, 2009 at 1:17 PM | PERMALINK

Norm Coleman: "God wants me to serve."

Lily Tomlin had it right. If you talk to God, that's called prayer. But when God starts talking to you, that's a sign of schizophrenia. So, either Norm Coleman blasphemes with the casualness of an accomplished liar, or he's off his rocker.

Because, really, if I take this guy Coleman at his word that "God wants me to serve" as the United States Senator from Minnesota, then I can only conclude - albeit with a heavy heart -- that God must be truly an ass.

Posted by: Donald from Hawaii on February 10, 2009 at 1:49 PM | PERMALINK

Is God registered to vote in Minn., or is that just another fraudulent ballot Coleman wants approved??

Posted by: biggerbox on February 10, 2009 at 2:59 PM | PERMALINK

Piggybacking on the last sentence of Donald from Hawaii's post, if God wants Norm Coleman to serve in the Senate, that doesn't speak terribly well of God.
