TUESDAY'S CAMPAIGN ROUND-UP....Today's installment of campaign-related news items that wouldn't generate a post of their own, but may be of interest to political observers.

* As was expected, former eBay CEO Meg Whitman kicked off her Republican gubernatorial campaign in California yesterday, formally launching an exploratory committee. She will likely face state Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner in a GOP primary.

* Speaking of exploratory committees, Ohio Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher (D) got his Senate campaign underway yesterday. Fisher will enjoy the support of Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland (D).

* And speaking of Strickland, a couple of high-profile Republicans are lining up to challenge the governor in 2010, but the latest Quinnipiac poll shows the incumbent with a huge edge.

* Is MSNBC host Joe Scarborough mulling over a Senate campaign in Florida next year? That's the rumor.

* Colorado's newly-appointed Sen. Michael Bennet (D) is apparently still struggling a little to introduce himself to voters who don't yet recognize him. He'll need to work on that -- Andrew Romanoff, the well-known former Speaker of the Colorado House, is mulling a primary challenge.

* It's bound to be a large Democratic field, but Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) has drawn his first of many challengers: Joe Torsella, a former president of the National Constitution Center and the current chairman of the State Board of Education, formed an exploratory committee yesterday.

* Remember Tennessee state House Speaker Kent Williams? The Republican who pulled a fast one on his GOP colleagues and became Speaker with the help of Democrats? Williams has been formally kicked out of the Republican Party for his actions.

* If Rep. Heath Shuler (D-N.C.) is thinking about possibly running for the Senate, he shouldn't pick fights with the Democratic congressional leadership.

That Bennett story is a little funny. You wonder if he wouldn't have benefited from some of the drama other senatorial replacements experienced this winter.

Well, since neither Whitman or Poizner were ever in a blockbuster movie, I think it's safe to say Califonia will finally have a Democratic governor again.

would this be the same joe scarborough recently quoted as saying, "perhaps we don't know what we're talking about."?

Heath Shuler can give up his senate dreams as of his last vote against the stimulus. Those of us who gave LOTS of cash to get Liddy Dole out of there will be looking for a progressive partner for Kay Hagan to represent NC, which is increasingly (and thankfully) BLUE.

Run Joe Run! But some of us remember Lori Klausutis.

'...Remember Tennessee state House Speaker Kent Williams? The Republican who pulled a fast one on his GOP colleagues and became Speaker with the help of Democrats? Williams has been formally kicked out of the Republican Party for his actions...'

ex-Assembly Speaker Willie Brown did something similar in California ages ago

Afterwards he kept the Republican as a side kick, giving him jobs when he became Mayor of SF

It was kind of cool and it drove the Repubs CRAZY !!!
(always a good thing)

I agree 100%. Hagan proved that a progressive can win in North Carolina, and I think Shuler will learn the same lesson in the Democratic primary as Liddy did last November. Good ridance
if he decides to run for the Senate.

Strickland is certainly safe, but he's hardly a fantastic example of progressive policy. He sailed into the Governor's office by basically being as "centrist" as he could. God save us all from centrist politicians. I'll give him some slack since Ohio is facing a nasty budget deficit, but he keeps ignoring causes, and instead treating symptoms. For example, Strickland is intent on mucking about in education to improve our educational system, but without correcting the blatantly unconstitutional way that Ohio funds public education. I keep looking at Mike Coleman, and wondering what could have been had his wife been a little less scandal prone.

Strickland's real security is that the GOP is so disgraced in Ohio that DeWine is the best they can come up with to face him. But hey, we've still got Sherrod Brown pulling for us.

Yep, he's really named Steve Poizner. Naturally he's a Republican.

"But some of us remember Lori Klausutis."

Please. Mr. Scarborough had nothing to do with Mrs. Klausutis's death. Scarborough (as a Senate candidate) can be defeated without slander and innuendo.

If Joe is elected, I hope interns are very careful around him
