AGAIN WITH THE TWITTERING.... About a month ago, then-RNC Chairman Mike Duncan said Republicans could appeal to younger voters with, among other things, "the Twittering."
Perhaps, but the party hasn't quite mastered the medium yet.
We talked the other day about Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-Mich.), the ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, revealing secret details about a trip to Iraq through his Twitter account.
This Republican-related Twitter error wasn't as dramatic, but it's just as embarrassing.
Yesterday the Virginia GOP came very close to taking control of the state Senate, nearly luring a Democratic Senator to switch parties and put them at a 20-20 tie, which would have been broken by the Republican Lt. Governor. Then Jeff Frederick, a state legislator and the party chairman, ruined it all by Twittering this:
"Big news coming out of Senate: Apparently one dem is either switching or leaving the dem caucus. Negotiations for power sharing underway."
The Dems then read the message, quickly mobilized to talk the renegade out of it, and stopped the GOP coup before it could happen.
We usually don't cover state-level politics, but this is just too much. Really, Mr. Frederick, you don't live-blog about ongoing secret negotiations!
It's a fairly new online application; I get that. And if Republicans want to embrace it, that's great. But they really should get a sense of how it works before using it.

"The Twittering" ?
Isn't that an M. Night Shyamalan movie?

I'm not sure I see the problem here.

Republican twittering only reveals the beauty of the logic of the Intelligent Designer who made them.

If the United States survives the next decade, we may all find ourselves thanking the stupidity of Republicans.
Don't change, Mr. Frederick! We need you exactly the way you are.
Crankily yours,

*Negotiations for power sharing underway.*
At that point? Negotiations with whom?

The fool who tweeted this is the same guy who invited a reporter to watch him train GOP canvassers and then told them, in front of the journalist, to be sure to tie Obama to Osama when talking to voters.
The boy just isn't the brightest bulb in the chandelier.

The republicans and their, *ahem* "grasp" of technology reminds me of when my kids were really little and they thought that if they closed their eyes I couldn't see them.

No, they should not. They should totally broadcast all SEKRIT DETAILS as loudly as possible. So shush there, you.

They have a problem here that strikes at the core of their identity crisis. Much of what they achieved in the late 80's - 90's was based on preaching to the choir through the AM radio. They could be as loony as they liked, because they were preaching to a loony audience who weren't about to fact check, or complain about them. As moderates realized these screech monkeys were full of it, they tuned out.
Now, their 'base' has been whittled down to the reliably delusional who take Limbaugh, Beck, et al at their word.
On the internet, this model fails, as they are preaching to the entire world. This is obviously where they need to go, but they're going to suffer some serious growing pains. Their base does not take well to reason. Rational thought itself is a sign of librulism to them.
Cultivating the support they need without sacrificing they support they have isn't going to happen quickly or easily.

I'll bet Karl Rove doesn't think al-Qaeda knows about twittering yet.

Republicans Twitter about their secret trips to Iraq, so why not negotiation over legislation?

I'm not sure this is about new technology as much as one individual's need to crow like a rooster. Others, like Zeitgeist have commented on the extent to which GOP antics can be seen as politicians reacting to their personal insecurities and needs in public. It's freakin' wierd, but I think that's about right.

I'm a trifle ashamed to admit that Jeffrey Frederick is my district's representative. Then again, his Clouseau-like bumbling may be the best thing to happen to Virginia Democrats since George Allen and a certain "macaca."

Why didn't W and the GOP figure out that they could easily find Osama bin Laden by keeping up with his Twitter account! And now it is too late for them!

Haven't Republicans always had a problem with understanding that any media they use isn't limited to their intended audience?
Macaca, etc.
