JEFF FREDERICK MAKES A NAME FOR HIMSELF.... Virginia Republican Chairman Jeff Frederick ran into a little trouble this week when his Twittering foiled his own party's efforts in the state Senate. Yesterday, Frederick capped off the week with a speech about the significance of Feb. 12, 1809 -- the day both Abraham Lincoln and Charles Darwin were born.

First, paying tribute to Lincoln, Frederick explained, "Abraham Lincoln is best know [sic], as you all well know, for freeing the slaves by issuing the Emancipation Proclamation affirming in his Gettyburg [sic] Address in 19, I'm sorry, 1863...."

From there, the state party chairman and state delegate, told the legislature, "Darwin, however, is best known for the theory of evolution, arguing that men are not only, quote, are only, not, not created, but they are not equal, as some are more evolved."

Seriously, how does one even start to respond to a guy like this? More importantly, how does someone like this get elected to a state legislature, and get chosen to lead a state party in the 21st century?

Keep in mind, this is the same Jeff Frederick who told Republican canvassers in the fall to connect Barack Obama and Osama bin Laden.

As Josh Glasstetter explained, "It's pretty clear what direction Frederick is taking the Virginia GOP. No wonder the party has continued to lose ground under his tenure."

"Less evolved"? WTF? Has he ever taken biology? No life form is more "evolved" in the sense of being perfectly developed for its surroundings than any other, except perhaps for Mr. Frederick. Next he's going to be talking about how he doesn't think about things he doesn't think about.

Christians, Muslims, Jews, and Hindus disagree on which is the One True Religion.

Let's take the ID'ers at their word.

Teach the controversy!

Facts are for elitists. I would like to blame lead paint ingestion for his commentaries, but I think it really boils down to entitlement programs--the rich are entitled to rule without actually being educated. Reminds me of that Harvard MBA that changed W's life in such meaningful ways.

Now that made me spew water.

By cracky, I think the Neanderthal from Virginia is on to something.

Steve Benen quoted Josh Glasstetter: "It's pretty clear what direction Frederick is taking the Virginia GOP."

Sounds like full speed ahead into gibbering incoherence.

Maybe they think the key to winning elections is speaking in a jumble of disconnected fragments of phrases so that no one knows what they hell they are talking about.

On the issue of "more or less evolved":

I have a pet theory that explains why evolution is object of such idiotic criticism nowadays. It's simple: the theory of evolution is no longer useful to boneheads. Back in the day, boneheads looked at evolution and said, "Hey, I'm more highly evolved than X" (e.g., my next door neighbor, the Irish, Africans, Jews, take your pick of subhumans). So evolution was useful to boneheads. Now that social Darwinism, as it is wont to be called, has gone out of fashion, and since it was BS from the start, boneheads have no more use for evolution, hence the idiotic criticism of the contemporary world.

It always amuses me when the modern Republican party tries to claim Lincoln as one of their own, as if ideology had nothing to do with it, only the label matters.

only one question; when does he declare for the governor's race? he's running out of time,.

Check out the big brain on Doctor Frederick.

Ugh. Between him, Eric Cantor (whose district I grew up in), and Virgil Goode, VA republicans are doing their best to embarrass this Virginian.

/At least we got Mark Warner...

I don't think that he knows what "quote" means.

I don't know; have you looked at the Texas Republican Party platform lately? It sets the "state party" bar pretty darn low.

Posted by: noncarborundum on February 13, 2009 at 2:35 PM | PERMALINK

Stephen, don't forget George Allen and Jim Gilmore. While they don't go all churchy all the time, they are two more humiliating Old Dominion rednecks. And two more good reasons why my red state has gone blue!

Proof positive that evolution "beyond" is not the same as evolution "upward."

Sigh. It's simply because more people can relate to a knucklehead like Jeff Frederick than they can to a smart guy like yourself, Steve.

If you remember from the other day, only 39% of Americans support the theory of evolution. Knuckleheads like this will be around forever.

Virginia politicians represent reverse evolution.

Think about it: The Commonwealth started out with an abundance of intellect -- Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, and on, and on. And today?

Posted by: K on February 13, 2009 at 3:06 PM | PERMALINK

Ironically enough, he does a pretty good job of proving his own point. There are some who are less evolved than others. In Virginia, he's their leader.

Posted by: JoeW on February 13, 2009 at 3:08 PM | PERMALINK

the answer to both questions is this; more intelligent people don't want the job.

This worry about human equality under God...........coming from a predominantly southern conservative party in a Southern state. Really?

Where was this religious concern when the South bought and sold human beings as property?

Or, is slavery now Darwin's fault?

Conservative cognitive dissonance is mindblowing.

Intentionally so. I've long had the sneaking suspicion that these guys secretly enjoy f*cking with our heads... Posted by: idlemind on February 13, 2009 at 3:30 PM | PERMALINK

How soon they forget.

Quick! Who was the president before Barack Obama?

Yesterday, I sadly noted that Jeffrey Frederick is my delegate to Richmond. After reading those comments, my amusement at his ineptness has given way to disgust. And remember, he represents Prince William County, supposedly part of more enlightened northern Virginia.

Backward southerners...

Vincent (@16:06), count your blessings. At least, "your representative" makes an asshole of himself publicly and frequently, so there's a chance that the voters will get tired of it and give him God-speed with a boot to the backside. "My representative" (I'm in Rockbridge county), OTOH, is just smart enough to know that he ought to keep his trap shut, so people have no idea how embarrassing he might be. He does the same amount of damage, since he raises his hand on all the wrong side issues, but our chances of convincing anyone of it are that much smaller.

Posted by: exlibra on February 13, 2009 at 4:50 PM | PERMALINK

It sounds as if evolution passed him by two or three generations back.

Jeff Frederick also made wild allegations against voter registerers (the right word?) like me in VA, saying the groups (like Progress for America) were deliberately trying to falsify voter registrations. Some workers did make up names to keep on the payroll, but they were exposed by the registration managers, not instigated or even coddled by the voter drives.

Shout-out to all you fellow Virginians speaking up! I've been mortified three times in the last three days. Oy.

I wonder -- is he evolved enough to see Russia from his house?

Posted by: tina on February 13, 2009 at 7:32 PM | PERMALINK

Virginia Democrats love Jeff Frederick! He's the gift that keeps on giving.

As for how he got where he is, they've raised an entire generation of Republicans who fervently believe that tax cuts raise revenue (and all taxes are the government stealing from you anyway), that immigrants are stealing your job and are responsible for most crime, that the homosexualists are trying to undermine society, and all the rest, and will severely punish any Republican who tries to disagree. Failure is always because of being insufficiently conservative, and when evaluating leaders, competence and success are not on the radar. It's put the state party on the path of greater and greater ideological purity and into an electoral death spiral.

Fantastic!

He's like George W. Bush and Dan Quayle rolled into one!

I expect to see him the front runner in 2012 with Cheney and Rove backing him 110%
