CAPTURE THE FLAG.... The Washington Times published a 743-word story today about President Obama making public appearances in front of American flags.

Oh, say -- can you see? Look. It's President Obama, and he's surrounded by American flags.

They're on the dais in star-spangled glory. They're at the town-hall meeting and the news conference, in bold folds of red, white and blue. The White House has rediscovered -- or possibly reinvented -- the patriotic cachet of Old Glory as a perfect frame for the new president.

That's the same president who once would not wear an American flag pin. Things have changed.

Three months after the election, and conservative news outlets are still talking about flag pins. Seriously.

The article also offers keen insights from luminaries.

"Neo-Marxists recognize the power of Old Glory as they steadfastly pursue their agenda," said talk-radio host Michael Savage. "As Castro taught them, 'hasta la victoria siempre,' always towards victory. As the street agitators themselves know, 'by all means necessary.' To them, our flag is just a rag."

Let's pause to appreciate how truly ridiculous this is. A newspaper ran an article today about the President of the United States making public appearances with American flags. To bolster the "premise" that this development is newsworthy, the newspaper quotes a lunatic who suggested the president is a Communist.

About a year ago, John Solomon, formerly of the Washington Post, took over the Times as its executive editor. Solomon vowed to take the paper -- a project of cult-leader Sun Myung Moon -- in a more credible and serious direction.

It looks like Solomon has quite a ways to go.

So having too many flags is bad? What about their obsession with Made In China US Flag Pins?

I wish they'd make up their puny minds...flags good or flags bad?

Posted by: ckelly on February 18, 2009 at 11:23 AM | PERMALINK

So, in the end, Solomon has been outed as a right-wing zealot. My guess is that he stepped over some invisible (to him) boundaries in his assignments at the AP and the Washington Post... One may wonder.

even by michael savage's standards, is there anything about his quote that makes any sense?

Posted by: howard on February 18, 2009 at 11:31 AM | PERMALINK

My first thought was that this was the height of stupidity, but then I checked myself with the realization that I have thought that several times before only to be marginally surprised when the unhinged right wing outdid itself yet again.

Solomon, a notorious hack, was lying.

And the NOOZEPAPERS wonder why their circulation is dropping like a rock. They used to be a source of credible information , but are all now a version of E! in print - except not quite as informative

Pretty cheeky for a newspaper owned by foreigners! It's time they butt out of our American politics...

Commenters on this blog will sometimes respond to some right-wing excess with the rhetorical question "Why do conservatives hate America?"

Usually it's just a snarky mockery of the right-wing talking point that "liberals" hate America.

However, in the case of Sun Myung Moon, it is quite literally true. He is a criminal as well as a neo-fascist nutcase, who has very clearly stated that he seeks the destruction of the United States of America and its democratic republican form of government, to be replaced by a totalitarian theocracy headed by himself.

And the purpose of The Washington Times is to advance Moon's agenda, using lies, hate speech and other propaganda tools to undermine and weaken the USA.

...Michael Savage.

It has been said, from time to time, and brought up by esteemed members of the community from both sides of the ideologically segregated dysfunctionality that is our American political system, that the ancient Romans dealt with their "lunatics" by simply feeding them to the lions. Given the severe effects of the current economic situation upon America's numerous zoos, it might be somewhat worthwhile to contemplate reinstating that old Roman tradition when discussing the minuscule intellectual capacities of the aforementioned individual-in-question....

"That's the same president who once would not wear an American flag pin."

It's bad enough that it's again with the flag pin crap, but what is that statement supposed to mean?

Obama "once" would not wear a pin? What is this idiot implying? John McCain had no pin during the debate with Obama, so John McCain once would not wear a flag pin. It means nothing.

When in office, Bush did the flags to death, but did that mean he was a Marxist? Maybe so.

Posted by: Capt Kirk on February 18, 2009 at 11:56 AM | PERMALINK

Look how they phrase it: ... who once would not wear an American flag pin ... Note the use of "would not", implying resistance to doing it, rather than just sometimes did not do it. The WaTi is a piece of shit.

Every time we have to put up with the public nuisance which is the Washington Times, I suggest an obligatory perusal of some of Sun Myung Moon's greatest hits, such as this gem. Or one of the many others to be found here.

Tomorrow's lead at the Washington Times will denounce the hypocrisy of the Obama administration by wasting fuel and adding to Global Warming in sending military planes full of American flags to Ottawa for the President's meeting with the Canadian Prime Minister. Just wanted to help you John, with your lede. And now back to Reid's "land deal".

Posted by: berttheclock on February 18, 2009 at 12:11 PM | PERMALINK

As is too often the case, when skimming the beginning of this post, I read "Washington Post" rather than "Times" and was amazed. Then I checked myself and saw my error and it made much mroe sense. I often find this small comfort..well, comforting.

In other words, same idiots, different shit, different day.

Posted by: LogopolisMike on February 18, 2009 at 12:15 PM | PERMALINK

My layman's understanding of psychology is that this is a classic case of projection. For years, conservatives have been shamelessly using the flag (and flag pins) to manipulate and intimidate opponents. To them, the flag has become a rag used to generate rage, a partisan prop instead of a unifying national symbol.

Now that the trappings of office are in their opponents hands, they assume that President Obama is using the flag in the same cynical fashion that they used it. They can't conceive of the flag as a unifier after decades of using it to divide Americans (EX: see Bush, George H.W., 1988 election).

Oh, say -- can you see? Look. It's President Obama, and he's surrounded by American flags. -- Wash Times

Ah, but look again... look closer... look really, really close... You thought it was American flags? Then why have all the stars been replaced by little crescents? We've always known that the guy was a closet Muslim and now his true colours are peeping through.

Posted by: exlibra on February 18, 2009 at 12:27 PM | PERMALINK

Yeah, some RepuGs do like that show of patriotism. Interestng that a true Republican and military leader such as Ike did not believe in either saluting the Marine Guards or having them salute him. Ronny of Fort Roach and VD training films started the saluting. Shrub, supposedly, a warrior over Waco did a flippant Shave Tail 2nd Louis attempt of a salute. President Obama, who never served, gives a fine salute. However, more importantly, glad to see him stop in front of the heilicopter, salute and then shake the hand of the young US Marine.

Posted by: berttheclock on February 18, 2009 at 12:29 PM | PERMALINK

Of course the reality remains that it doesn't matter whether President Obama has twenty flags or zero flags behind him; some Republicans simply want to attack him regardless. Nothing will change that.

You should have mentioned that this was the same John Solomon who routinely recycled Republican oppo research pieces as "news" while at the Post. Him bringing credibility to the Times is like me bringing a triple threat to the Cincinnati Reds -- you can't bring what you don't have.

I've never understood the Reagan-instituted custom of the President saluting; I was dismayed when Clinton imitated it and now Obama as well. The president is a civilian; the president does not salute. And, as any military type will confirm, even the military do not salute when in civilian clothes.

Posted by: Susan on February 18, 2009 at 12:44 PM | PERMALINK

I always like watching Michael (Savage) Wiener when he puts the lie so publicly to the ancient amti-Semitic slur that all Jews are really sart.

JWK makes a good point. If Obama didnt have flags behind him, the WaTimes would criticize him for that.

I hate that stupid salute that modern Presidents do. People don't remember, but it was Reagan who began this practice; before him, while presidents were saluted by the military, they did not salute back since they themselves were not in the military. (It's a simple rule: if you're not in the armed services, you don't salute). If you examine old photos and videos of Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford and Carter you will never see them saluting (and most of them were veterans and knew the rules governing who should and should not salute perfectly well). But Reagan, cheap showman that he was and perhaps ashamed of his lack of service, began this practice of saluting back and now we're stuck with it. I had hoped that Obama wouldn't continue it, but I suppose that hope was in vain.

What's worse: a joke newspaper like the Washington Times which is not really taken seriously, or the Washington Post, which will lie just as easily (usually about foreigners - imagine the article is about Ahmadinejad) which IS taken seriously?.......

I've often thought the main problem with the newspapers in the US is that the people actually BELIEVE what is printed in them. If we assumed the media was lying when it suited their purposes (revenues, corporate ownership, neo-con sympathies towards Arabs) things would go easier.

We should show the same skepticism the Russians did the Pravda, in USSR days.

Savage also claimed a couple of days ago that through the use of President's Day "Liberal Lice" were conspiring to keep us from honoring Washington and Lincoln because they are white; that only black men like "Chairman Obama" can be honored in this country.

He's a piece of work.

Hmmmm.

The White House has rediscovered -- or possibly reinvented -- the patriotic cachet of Old Glory as a perfect frame for the new president.

So this subservsive practive of having the president speak in front of a bunch of flags is something that this Whie House just stumbled upon? I know it was almost a year ago, but did the WaTi somehow forget this?

Images of Obama's race speech

Or has retrograde amnesia somehow afflicted everyone at the WaTi, and the last eight years no longer exist? 'Cause, gosh, it's not like Bush ever stood in front of flags, is it?

Bush, flags

And: Bush, more flags, you get the picture

I can't believe I just spent time on this.
