WOMEN = DAYCARE?.... Jamison Foser flags the online poll running right now on U.S. News' "Washington Whispers" website. It asks readers:

Who'd run the best daycare?

If you had a choice of four daycare centers run separately by Michelle Obama, Sarah Palin, Hillary Clinton, and Nancy Pelosi, which would you choose for your kids?

The poll features a picture of bobble-head dolls for each of the women, in front of a movie poster for "Mister Mom."

I can't imagine what U.S. News was thinking. Would it ever occur to them, even for a moment, to ask who would run the best daycare center: Barack Obama, John McCain, Joe Biden, or John Boehner?

Going off the board, George Bush would be most able to talk at the level of the kids.

Just part of the reason why I have always (less than affectionately) referred to that rag as the "U.S. News & Republican Report".

Any complaints about this article should be filed into the 'political correctness whiners' category! After all, it is not as if the article was about the Taliban wing of the rethug party. That would be out of bounds!

Unbelievable!

Next up: "Which of the following African-American Democrat political leaders would you choose to pick cotton in your fields?"

Did not look at the poll. But I suspect the authors are really using code language to poll the question they really want to ask which is: "Which of these four women is the best mother?"

I suspect Michelle Obama wins that one hands down.

The equivalent male question about who is the best Dad might be something like the following:

"Who would you rather see coach your kid's soccer team? John McCain, George Bush, Barak Obama or Mitch McConnell?". To which I bet Barak Obama also wins hands down.

Kent, sadly, Palin (mother of dropouts and unwed mothers) is beating Michelle by more than 10%. Says a lot about the readership of the site, doesn't it.

They're Republicans. Daycare is "women's work."

i was just there, both palin and obama are pretty much even, in the lead, clinton and pelosi almost no votes.

good to know that women who are currently mothers are viewed by the public as better childcare providers than women who are not! breaking news! whooda figgered?

what a bunch of wipes.

i guess the republicans are done whining about palin not getting the respect of her male peers.

Who wouldn't want their newborn toted around like a golf bag?

In US News' defense, those bobblehead dolls don't look at all like their namesakes.

"good to know that women who are currently mothers are viewed by the public as better childcare providers than women who are not!"

I think you mean mothers of young children...they're all mothers...I don't think you stop being a mother just 'cos your kids grow up!

Which would look better bare footed in the kitchen?

Posted by: jen f on February 21, 2009 at 11:16 AM | PERMALINK

While we're on this topic, which national newsmagazine would make the best kindling?

Posted by: rabbit on February 21, 2009 at 11:19 AM | PERMALINK

Who wouldn't want their newborn toted around like a golf bag?

Who wouldn't want to leave their children with someone who gets on an 11-hour flight after her water breaks, and who, once on the ground, bypasses major medical facilities with neonatal care centers to deliver her Down baby (at risk for heart and other congenital defects requiring immediate care) at a rural clinic?

Since you asked, Boehner, as head of the House Republicans, obviously has the most experience dealing with obstreperous children.

They're Republicans. Daycare is "women's work."

I worked in a daycare when I was in college.

After being an infantryman in the Army.

Being in charge of a dozen 18-20 year olds is a HELL of a lot easier than being in charge of half a dozen 6 year olds, let me tell you.

This is a troll poll. Sort of thing you'd see on FreeRepublik.

However, just speculating:

The Palin Ultra-Christian Day Care Church would experience an initial popularity boom due to her large following on the far right. She'd get all kinds of state and federal funds (well, fewer now that Bush is out of office). Her office would look like a palace, she'd have her own company-funded Ford Extinction for personal use and a reserved parking spot in front.

Eventually, however, she'd be kicked out by the board after funding scandals broke and they found the center was $20 million in the red. As the audit progressed another story would break about child and worker abuse that would be on par with the Catholic Church scandals.

The Hillary Clinton Day Care Village (as in "It Takes a Village....") would get tons of publicity and be a popular charity cause for celebrities, with all kinds of events published in the society pages. After a couple years a scandal would break in that it was found that only 4 or 5 low income kids were there, although they managed to get those kids into all the photo sessions, and the rest were kids of Clinton's billionare supporters.

The Pelosi Day Care Center would be a reasonably effective average day care facility. Workers would complain about excessive bureaucracy, slow response to problem reports, but that's not unusual. The workers' biggest complaint would be that Pelosi never really confronted the difficult customers, instead privately telling the workers she "wished the bad parents would go away" but didn't like confrontations.

The Obama Day Care Place would quickly be known as the best kind of that facility in the nation.

I'd like a daycare run by someone with a degree in early childhood education and a lot of administrative experience. Michelle Obama is a lawyer, and the other three people on the list are politicians. None of them have the qualifications for the job.

Did not look at the poll. But I suspect the authors are really using code language to poll the question they really want to ask which is: "Which of these four women is the best mother?"

I think someone on another site nailed it: the secret question is, "Which one of them would you do?" Which is why Palin is winning -- she's still the Republican Sweetheart that they all fantasize about.

Posted by: Mnemosyne on February 21, 2009 at 12:37 PM | PERMALINK

Palin's current lead in the poll is probably driven by the fact that those voting for her want her to babysit *themselves*, not their kids.

Works for me, actually. As long as she's not elected to any public office after her current term expires.

Posted by: Curmudgeon on February 21, 2009 at 12:48 PM | PERMALINK

And quite honestly, I think Joe Biden would run a pretty good day care center.

Posted by: LarryB on February 21, 2009 at 1:46 PM | PERMALINK

I totally went with Palin. Forgive me. I just couldn't help myself.

Posted by: Doctor Biobrain on February 21, 2009 at 2:10 PM | PERMALINK

Barack Obama, John McCain, Joe Biden, or John Boehner?

Of course, it's Obama .. he has that community organizing skill set

Posted by: Neo on February 21, 2009 at 4:18 PM | PERMALINK

ah irony.

I've read about this poll on other lib/prog sites & am amazed how many people look past the blatant sexism & honestly answer the question. Reminds me of the thunderdolts reading pieces on whether or not the Octomom has an unhealthy fixation on Angelina Jolie, and use it as an excuse to compare the two on looks & grace. "awmahgahd, kin ah jus she, Octomom is lahk NO Angelina, uhhkeh? Lahk, Angelina is lahk SOOOO much hotter, and she can take care of her kids and..." yeah, got it. Way to miss the point, then AND now, dipwads.

John McCain would run the best daycare. If the whippersnappers got out of line, he'd nuke 'em.
