THERE ARE OTHER SENATORS.... A press release just arrived via email:
Katie Couric will speak to Senator John McCain in a live web exclusive interview tonight (24) on CBSNews.com and CNET.com at approximately 10:30 PM, ET, immediately following CBS News broadcast coverage of President Obama's address to a joint session of Congress. The Webcast includes live response to viewer questions....
It occurred to me that Katie Couric had just interviewed McCain on the "CBS Evening News," and sure enough, she did. It happened right around the time McCain was interviewed on CBS's "Face the Nation," which occurred right around the time McCain was interviewed on the "CBS Morning Show."
So, naturally, when CBS News looks for someone to offer some analysis of a presidential address to Congress, Katie Couric turns, once again, to John McCain. It will be his fourth interview in three weeks on just this network.
Atrios noted last week, "I do wish President McCain [was] on my teevee a bit more often."
Perhaps CBS didn't pick up on the sarcasm.

What better way to remind us why we voted for President Obama....

He looked old and sounded sick and his hair was flying around yesterday when he complained about the new helicopters Bush 43 ordered and tried to make them some kind of boondoggle for Obama.
With deft humor and self-effacement, Obama put McShame in his place.
Why ANYONE listens to this tired old man anymore is a mystery to me.

Well that new CBS News head hates Obama and thinks all liberals are bad people, so this actually does make a bit of sense.

After talking about the cost of the helicopter yesterday, there was a clip of him on today complaining that the idea of cutting defense spending in the middle of two wars is absurd. Pick a side, John, any side.

Seriously, this serves several purposes.
By inviting McCain on TV the Republican base, who considers McCain a RINO, can argue that this is more proof the media is really liberal.
By not inviting any other prominent Republican on TV, they are helping hide just how crazy the candidates for 2012 (except Jindal) sound.
They couldn't invite Jindal because he's giving the official Republican response.
Nevertheless, despite their best efforts to help the Republicans, I'm sure that JWK is right -- the more people see of McCain the more they are glad Obama won.

I wish Obama had answered, hell yes, we need them to hunt down Russians trying to invade across the Bering Strait.

In 2001, Al Gore declined similar interview opportunities for a long period of time out of respect for the office of the presidency.

Well what do you expect from Katie 'Navy Seals Rock!!' Couric?
If she's a Republican herself, she hids it better than Gibson on ABC/Disney or Williams/Brokaw on NBC/Universal.
None of the networks have any real journalistic integrity, as they are all owned by large media/entertainment corporations (and in NBC's case, the media corporation is owned largely by GE). Their primary goal is to distribute whatever primarily benefits them and their shareholders.

I have no problem with McCain being presented as the face (and mind) of the pubs. Better than Giuliani, who has some brains, or Huckabee, who is nuts, but in an appealing way.

well, to be fair. (and I know, I am reaching here) if you're CBS, you want to have a chat with a Senator before the Joint Address, you can't really use a Democrat, because they won't say anything particularly interesting, afraid of showing up Obama (or of looking small when compared to the full force and majesty of an erudite, charismatic President with all the trappings of his office behind him. So you're stuck with a Republican. the only problem is, the Republicans, as a general rule, are batshit crazy. so who are you going to use? at least McCain used to be normal and makes for good TV, plus, the great unwashed actually know his name.

He's very timely guest and the go-to guy for expert economic analysis.
"The issue of economics is something that I've really never understood as well as I should. I understand the basics, the fundamentals, the vision, all that kind of stuff".

Can we just award McCain the prize for World's Sorest Loser and move on already?
He has every right to voice his disagreements, but most people would wait a few months before attacking the guy who bested them.
He's one pathetic loser.

nah, i think this has less to do with CBS promoting mccain than CBS's choices as to who to call on from republican "leadership" is rank with complete morons.
my guess is that couric keeps picking mccain for these appearances because he's the least offensive of the lot, though that's not saying much.
plus, couric and others at CBS probably feel sorry for mccain that he's so much on the outs with his own party and so clearly (and desperately) trying to get himself realigned to being seen as a leader.
mccain came too close to being elected. CBS tried very hard to help him in that. perhaps couric and CBS feel they owe him because the couric interviews of palin played a significant role in him losing.
thank you DTV changeover for removing television "news" from my home!

Does anyone remember John Kerry landing this many interviews four years ago? Me neither. In fact, he was treated like he didn't exist and hadn't just lost by a few thousand votes under suspicious circumstances, unlike McCain.

I hate being fair minded about this, but . . . McCain was the Repub pres. nominee. Who better as their mouthpiece?
To check for equivalency, I wonder how often Kerry showed up in 2005 after Bush spoke or otherwise made news. My guess is not as much.
Posted by: angker on February 24, 2009 at 3:54 PM | PERMALINK
angker, exactly (re Kerry on TV in 2005); moreover, McCain was soundly defeated in an open election while Kerry narrowly lost to an incumbent. The idea that McCain's opinion now is any more relevant than Kerry's then is mind-boggling.

The media is just driving itself into irrelevancy. Honestly, why watch the nightly news when it is just going to be a buch of blowhards lieing to you?

Sully the hero pilot was busy.
And did you see what he was busy doing? Stickin' it to the man:
Airline finances may hurt safety
That's right -- he got up and testified that deregulation was bad for the airlines and safety could be compromised if we're not careful.
The more this guy talks, the more I love him.

Funny, I don't recall John Kerry being interviewed and asked to bloviate "wisdom" on every fucking subject on every fucking channel after he lost in 2004. McCain lost, rather decisively, therefore his opinions and policies were rejected by the American people. Not to mention, he has no expertise in a whole host of subjects he has been asked to comment on and clings to an outdated, wholly rejected ideology. But no matter, onward goes the media...
Was it Josh Marshall who pondered, "I wonder what it would be like if John McCain had lost?"
Posted by: ckelly on February 24, 2009 at 4:42 PM | PERMALINK
This would be the same Katie Couric who, during the campaign, had McCain on yet again for the evening news, helping him all that she could by way of cutting and splicing his answers to other questions because he was being so fucking stupid. And then tried to hide it. Welcome to the Corporate Media and evil. Can anyone explain exactly why these corporate pieces of shit make all the millions that they do, Couric makes 15 million a year, cum slut Williams, 10 million, pig shit Gibson 8 million , and the teachers of our kids for christ sake make about 30,000 a year ! this is the perfect symbol and reality of what is wrong with our country.
