QUOTE OF THE DAY.... George Will's understanding of social norms is on par with his understanding of global warming.

Asked for a "final thought" on the president's speech last night, conservative columnist George Will chose to focus on the fact that Obama was able to wrap his arms around another man, in friendship. "I don't know when men started to hug each other, but hug they do, and look at that," he said.

Really? I don't recall him complaining when George W. Bush kissed Joe Lieberman after a State of the Union address a couple of years ago.

Adam Serwer, who was kidding, responded, "Well I don't know when it started, but it needs to stop. Don't people know that men hugging other men puts you on the lonely path to sin?"

Tell him it's hip-hop urban stuff, and that Michael "Off-the-Hook" Steele says it's all cool.

I'm sure George Will averts his eyes after the final out of the World Series every year.

What else was Will supposed to say. Obama is sucking the oxygen out of Village. Will realizes that Conservatives are being rapidly outflanked and there is very little they can do about it, barring the utter collapse of the economy. Its like realizing that you've lost the chess match about three of four moves before it happens.

So what's Will's opinion of grown men walking and holding hands, as the Bushes are wont to do with their Saudi friends?

Posted by: Mnemosyne on February 25, 2009 at 5:02 PM | PERMALINK

What did Will have to say about the picture of Bu$h holding hands with the Saudi prince?

Or kissing him?

Man, I am approaching 40 and I hope in my lifetime I'll see the end of Republican hypocrisy.

"I don't know when men started to hug each other, but hug they do, and look at that," he said.

I think it began when George W. Bush and John McCain wrapped up each other up in a big fat bearhug and didn't let go for five more years.

Will had a tough childhood.

Symptoms include finding Cokie Roberts charming and insightful.

I think Obama wanted a piece of Lieberman too, and get a piece of him he did. I just hope Chris Mathews wasn't feeling that thrill up his leg at that moment.

There is a difference between a manly Republic hug and a liberal homosexual-agenda hug.

This actually explains a lot about George Will. I'm serious.

The Republican hug is preceded by a foot-tap of consent? Posted by: Uli Kunkel on February 25, 2009 at 5:22 PM | PERMALINK

"The Republican hug is preceded by a foot-tap of consent?"

When members of the Democrat party hug they are signaling support for tax-and-spend gay marriage. Hugs by members of the Republic party symbolize the self-evident necessity of cutting taxes and making homosexuality a capital offense.

Gosh, I seem to recall a picture of McCain hugging W. That would be the two most recent GOP presidential candidates hugging. Perhaps George Will isn't aware that both of them are men?

" 'I don't know when men started to hug each other, but hug they do, and look at that,' he said."

"And Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him: and they wept."

When Bush did all his man-hugging and hand-holding, Will was able to studiously avert his gaze and remain concentrated on his navel. But, with Obama, it's suddenly "cant take my eyes off you"

I wonder what it says abut Will and his fantasies...

Posted by: exlibra on February 25, 2009 at 6:13 PM | PERMALINK

so, he doesn't remember that loving McCain/Bush hug? that picture was everywhere.

Posted by: AJT on February 25, 2009 at 6:13 PM | PERMALINK

Gosh, I seem to recall a picture of McCain hugging W. That would be the two most recent GOP presidential candidates hugging.

Strictly speaking, no, because in that photo McCain is hugging W sycophantically and desperately, wailing "Shane! Don't gooooooo!" Bush is declining to hug back, instead looking over McCain's shoulder as if to say, "Is there any limit to how much I can publicly degrade and abuse this man before he stops hanging on my leg like an exhausted toddler hangs onto his mother's?"

As we discovered, the answer was no.

And there is good evidence that George F. Will has heard of Esau:

Posted by: Cazart on February 25, 2009 at 6:29 PM | PERMALINK

Will's is just jealous. He wants a piece of the O man too

How many times does George Will have to show that he is an not only an unprincipled hack, but also fundamentally unserious before somebody takes away his highly visible soapbox?

Eh? My brain must have suffered a Sudden Density Surge, because I can't figure out what you're talking about. Except for the word "hug" is doesn't seem to have anything to do with Benen's posting on Will.

Please clarify?

Thanks, Esteban Folsom, for the YouTube clip. I enjoyed it even more when I saw it was posted by "the wizard" or "the magician" (that's what "czarodziej" means, in Polish)

I find that one of Obama's most annoying features--putting his hands on other people, sort of like he's bestowing affection on a child or underling. He does it all the time.

Not quite about hugs per se, but here's a transcript from SNL with a hilarious sendup of George Will as sports-fan intellectual prick:

Does anyone else here think that George Will is in dire need of a hug? He strikes me as someone who has his personal space clearly defined and that no one ever, ever enters it-- which explains a lot.

Apparently Will has one of those magic mirrors at home that makes him see Daniel Craig when he looks into it. The rest of us see Elisha Cook Jr. in a Hugo Boss suit.

Almost as bad as Bush giving unwanted back rubs to the foreign heads of state, no?

Posted by: exlibra on February 25, 2009 at 11:56 PM | PERMALINK

After the last eight years of treating Democrats as sub-human, Will just can't stand the fact that "the most conservative man in the Senate," Tom Coburn, would physically acknowledge a Democratic president. Will's "have you no shame" moment was his head exploding at the concept that Republicans no longer rule the world and that they may actually put something other than loyalty to the party first.

I think it was 60 Minutes that did a piece a good many years ago about the ritualized dance of physical contact in Washington. The code of contact in chambers of power has been studied and these gestures have none of the meaning that George Will imbues with his high-schoolish "eeeew, two guys hugging" statement.

After having to listen to Bush speeches for 8 years, its a wonder everybody didn't hug him. The stumble-bum frat boy spiel had to lose its charm years ago. Most of the people in that room like to feel they are adults. The way Obama speaks is good for the country and everyone in it.

I saw one clip of Obama at the joint session kissing Hillary on the cheek.

Is he a switch hitter?

But Bush's obnoxious habit of rubbing bald men's heads didn't bother you at all? Tool.

Posted by: shortstop on February 26, 2009 at 9:16 AM | PERMALINK

I'm not a fan of Wills at all, but it does seem ungenerous to mock him without acknowledging the context in which he made the comment. As Obama was leaving the hall after his speech he gave/received a long, warm hug from Sen. Tom Coburn. Not exactly political fellow-travelers. That was the odd political moment that prompted Wills' remark, and he complimented Obama's bipartisanship.
