Michele Bachman: Keeping It Real

From CNN, via TPMDC:

"As he concluded his remarks, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann -- the event's moderator -- told Steele he was "da man."

"Michael Steele! You be da man! You be da man," she said."

Dat Michele Bachmann is sho' nuff hep to da black man's lingo. She down with Malcolm and the Panthers. Any moment now she gwine get wise to da special secret code words like 'bling' and 'bitch' and 'chill' and 'whack'.

She keep conversatin like dis, black folks gwine realize dat Barack Obama ain't the only hep cat on da scene.

Michele Bachman is only the first of soon to be many GOP bigots that'll openly make fun of Steele either by "embracing" his blackness in a nauseating way (i.e. usin da lingo) or just flat-out talk/laugh behind his back until they're all caught and the charade of GOP "inclusion" is exposed. That Steele choose to be the front for this disingenuous party and their hateful and fear mongering policies makes it even more nauseating as it unfolds, and it will unfold...

Can't...stop...snickering.

Holy. Mother. Of. God.

I can't wait for Michele to show up in Congress wearing a huge 'fro and a black, red & green dashiki, carrying a copy of "Soul on Ice," all while listening to to Miriam Makeba and Gil Scott-Heron on her ipod.

I personally think that it would have been better for the GOP if Michelle molested/deep French Kissed Michael Steele the same way she did W rather a sad attempt to patronize him.

Could someone with more experience or knowledge please explain why this embarrassment won re-election?

Posted by: ET on February 27, 2009 at 11:28 AM | PERMALINK

ET, She's in a jerry-rigged district that probably contains 1/2 of the state's wingnuts and christianists.

I'm thinking that soon she'll be on TV trying to tell us that she was saying the more Fargo-esque 'Yah!' instead of 'Yo'.

I don't get it. How is your stupid use of fake Ebonics better than hers? You got paid for that? Gross.

Posted by: Haik Bedrosian on February 27, 2009 at 11:39 AM | PERMALINK

A diarist over at Kos who's a Minneapolis resident and anti-Bachmann blogger has stated that she represents a heavily-gerrymandered district full of evangelicals and far-right wingnuts. Apparently Bachmann's initial rise to local fame was fueled by her appearances on local evangelical radio shows, and I gather her statements on those occasions make her public utterances these days seem tame. Unfortunately, lots of people in her district think she's "da bomb," so to speak.

Her comments remind me of the scene from Airplane where the little old white lady hops up and says, "I speak jive."

I think Stephen Colbert described this development perfectly on last night's show:

GOP - Grand Ol' Posse

While one is pandering (Bachman), the other is satire, (Hilzoy)

I think we're getting into "...and don't forget to take your medication" territory.

Posted by: MattF on February 27, 2009 at 11:54 AM | PERMALINK

Hahahaha! Hilarious!

If she had at least said "You da man!" it would have still been racist and stupid, but for her to say "You be da man!" is even worse. It's like she learned African American lingo from Amos and Andy.

Good Lord, this makes me feel sorry for Michael "Democrat for a Day" Steele.

OK, I'm done.

This tells us all we need to know about what any GOP outreach to minorities will look like. Must remember to keep antacid on hand.

I dunno about the satire explanation--I understand the satiric intent, but it's really hard to carry off. I really love Hilzoy's work. But I think this "Should I use blackface on my blog" flowchart might be applicable here:

No matter what you say about her, Michele Bachman is a gift that keeps on giving.

You go girl...

Why did Michele Bachmann hang on to her Congressional seat? (Such an embarrassment!) It isn't just that the MN 6th district is hugely conservative and that Bachmann is a skillful politician who ran nasty smear campaign against the DFL candidate, Ed Tinklenberg. That race also had a candidate from the Independent party, Bob Anderson, who received 10% of the vote. Bachman had 46% of the vote, Tinklenberg had 43%.

So it was really close. We will never know who would have won if MN had instant runoff voting.

That "little old white lady from Airplane" is Barbara Billingsley, June Cleaver from Leave it To Beaver. She's an icon, damn it. Show some respect (and she's pretty tall for a lady, not exactly "little").

I spell couch potato WITHOUT the 'e' at the end, my friend.

Have a look at: Understanding Michele Bachmann in the context of Human Evolution

Posted by: Greg Laden on February 27, 2009 at 12:53 PM | PERMALINK

You know, it IS possible for we humans to empathize and relate to people of other colors and cultures without being demeaning, patronizing, or making an ass of ourselves. Sadly, that point is lost on Republicans. They don't bother trying to empathize with ANYBODY.

Posted by: Keori on February 27, 2009 at 12:59 PM | PERMALINK

I was just hopping on to say that at any minute some clueless conservative would whine that making fun of white people's versions of black people's speech is "racist," but I see Haik Bedrosian ably demonstrated this particular idiocy for us.

PTate: Ed Tinklenberg

El Tinklenberg. Short for Elwyn.

OK OK ... since Jindal flamed out, Palin got stuck up in Alaska doing the GOP shuffle (juggling subpoenas, investigations, defending hack appointments etc etc) that leaves Micheal Steele to shoulder the burden but c'mon man, like any dead horse- you can only have fun flogging it for so long !! ... Michele Bachman needs to step out on the national stage in a big way and fast too, before SNL starts sounding like a stuck record !!
We can just spend the recession watching these clowns soil themselves, over and over ... roflmao

Halk: since I don't get paid for this, you can rest easy.

I thought that the difference was that I was making fun of Michele Bachman. Which is why none of the terms I used is less than about 20 years old, for instance.

That's good at least.

Comedy is hard, and it didn't come off well. Sounded more like you were making fun of Ebonics.

I don't think there's a Godwin/Poe-type name for the phenomenon yet, but whenever a person presumes to tell others what is and is not funny, there is a 99.997% chance that said person has a lousy sense of humor.

Really? No one else seemed to have any trouble grasping the joke.

Posted by: shortstop on February 27, 2009 at 6:28 PM | PERMALINK

Really?

Really. What was the joke, exactly? Bachman puts on blackface and Hilzoy does a minstrel dance to make fun of her?

Bunch of bleating sheep. Who cares what others 'seem to grasp?' Think for yourselves you anonymous cowards.

Oh, we do. And we all independently came to the conclusion, as we so often do, that you're not all that bright.

Posted by: shortstop on February 27, 2009 at 8:14 PM | PERMALINK

This is just too funny. It reminds me of someone old trying to sound hip with younger kids...

She's so clueless she doesn't even know this...

There is nothing so pathetic as someone who is THAT white and THAT conservative trying to sound hip-hop cool...

Except maybe a black guy like Michael Steele acting like such an 'Uncle Tom'...

Could the GOP be this desperate to connect with urbanites? Apparently so.
