IS THIS 'BEYOND CUTTING-EDGE'?.... Following up on Hilzoy's item from earlier, I want to offer the Republican Party some simple and friendly advice: stop trying so hard to be cool. It's backfiring.

The catalyst for all of this is Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) telling RNC Chairman Michael Steele last night, "Michael Steele! You be da man! You be da man."

Of course, this followed Steele's speech to the CPAC banquet, during which he told the far-right crowd:

"What a house tonight. Are there any conservatives in the house tonight?"

"Tonight we tell the American people: We know, in the past, that we did wrong. My bad."

"Young people in the house stand up! Young people in the house stand up!"

This comes a day after Steele told ABC News that he sends "some slum love out to my buddy, Gov. Bobby Jindal." Steele added that Jindal is "doing a friggin' awesome job in his state."

We've heard about "bling, bling." We've been promised a Republican Party that's "off the hook." We've been told the GOP will mount a comeback "with the Twittering." We've seen candidates for the RNC chairmanship argue over who has more Facebook friends. The Republican Party, rumor has it, is going to go "beyond cutting edge."

Enough. This is embarrassing. These guys are making The Daily Show's "Reagraham Lincool" skit look like it was sincere.

And Republicans just can't get over it, but, guess what -- the president is black!!

Just got off the bullet train from Vegas, and boy are my... arms tired.... ba-doomp.

Being fake is never cool. Steele and Bachman are just embarrasing themselves.

Our president is giving a bang up speech at Camp LeJeune right now. Hope you can hear or read it.

Posted by: Oregonian on February 27, 2009 at 12:21 PM | PERMALINK

How do they fail so hard?

Posted by: splat on February 27, 2009 at 12:23 PM | PERMALINK

It's not just that they're trying to be cool.

It's like Bachmann has never worked with or socialized with an actual black person and knows about these things called "black people" from television sitcoms.

It reveals more than uncool.

Posted by: riffle on February 27, 2009 at 12:28 PM | PERMALINK

Listening to Steele is like watching a middle-aged mom getting affecting her teenage daughter's mannerisms in a desperate attempt to connect with a child that despises her. It's gross to watch.

Posted by: episty on February 27, 2009 at 12:28 PM | PERMALINK

When you go "Beyond cutting edge," doesn't that mean you fall off the cliff? Maybe that's what they're getting at.

Posted by: MLS on February 27, 2009 at 12:32 PM | PERMALINK

.

Yeah, but what's worse is the actual GOP behind the giggly fake front: these guys really are a bizarre collection of 19th century reactionaries, thug authoritarians on the Latin American model and Oxycontin-wired weirdies.

What America needs now is a fair and square redrawing of electoral lines, and another election to flush the joint out.

Posted by: David Lloyd-Jones on February 27, 2009 at 12:34 PM | PERMALINK

My bad?... You drove our country off a cliff and... "my bad" is all you've got? You think that about covers it, huh? And now you feel entitled to get right back behind the wheel of our country?

...wha?

Posted by: charles on February 27, 2009 at 12:35 PM | PERMALINK

the entire gop has lost their jiggy minds.

Author Terry Pratchett has a recurring character in his stories named "Cut-Me-Own-Throat" Dibbler. Somehow this whole vaguely disturbing Republican schtick reminds me of him a whole bunch.

Posted by: Curmudgeon on February 27, 2009 at 12:35 PM | PERMALINK

It's all so confusing. The culture warriors are adopting the trappings of the same pop culture they are convinced is our undoing - and they are doing it so stunningly awful. I can't wait until Boehner starts greeting people with a 'What up dawg?' and Romney gives shout outs to his homies.

Posted by: JoeW on February 27, 2009 at 12:36 PM | PERMALINK

riffle, have you ever been to bachmann's district? it's pretty pale.

Posted by: mellowjohn on February 27, 2009 at 12:40 PM | PERMALINK

I think it worth considering that "the Man" and "Mr. Charley" were once synonyms.

Posted by: MR Bill on February 27, 2009 at 12:41 PM | PERMALINK

just shoot these people. put them out of their (and our) misery.

Posted by: mudwall jackson on February 27, 2009 at 12:41 PM | PERMALINK

Just a quick OT comment:
President Obama just praised two young Marines (19 and 21) who died last April thwarting an attack that saved the lives of their fellow Marines and Iraqi police. It's heroic and it's frustrating (that we're there) and tremendously sad for those Marines and their families.

And I have to contrast that to the greedy Wall Street b*st*rds who are steeling our taxpayer money in bonuses, etc. when they have failed us. And the bushies who got us into this mess in Iraq and made it worse by shredding our Constitution and international agreements, and by war profiteering and bankrupting our country.

Yet those Marines who didn't fail us gave their lives. We must hold the Wall Streeters and the bushies accountable for their failures.

Posted by: Me on February 27, 2009 at 12:41 PM | PERMALINK

Maybe they should start with slang that works with most of the party membership--phrases like "bee's knees", "twenty-three skidoo" and such. I myself am astoundingly unhip and even I can see that they're failing even more than my attempts to be hip in high school.

Posted by: noplot on February 27, 2009 at 12:43 PM | PERMALINK

What's next, Mitt Romney singing "Who let the dogs out"?

Posted by: ibid on February 27, 2009 at 12:48 PM | PERMALINK

At last sighting Steele was seen with his pants down, bent over with ass cheeks spread, squeaking 'fuck me, fuck me' to every passing elephant behind him, and Bachman was screaming in hysterical delight ' your da man, your da man' ....... my god

Posted by: stormskies on February 27, 2009 at 12:55 PM | PERMALINK

Very, er, proactive of them. A totally outrageous paradigm. (Look, I know the reference is a bit dated, but dated slang deserves a dated reference.)

Posted by: bgn on February 27, 2009 at 12:55 PM | PERMALINK

bgn -- the reference is perfect. I've seen Poochie references in other threads. I think it's time to refer to Michael Steele as the GOP's Poochie.

Somebody needs to collect some YouTube highlights of that classic Simpsons episode and mash it with Steele in a blog post. It'd go viral for sure.

Posted by: J on February 27, 2009 at 12:58 PM | PERMALINK

Please leave the Republicans alone, they are high entertainment, and we can use some hearty laughs. :D I think maybe they have to "work through" their situation, in a therapeutic sense, and frankly we deserve a few months of Reps floundering, reinforcing in the public mind just how destructively incompetent they are, so that we can get some things done. Eventually we DO need intelligent, constructive opposition to keep us from the inevitable overreach.

We haven't begun to have the conversation about what constitutes a "fair share" of tax burden, or what constitutes a greater "moral hazard," believing we're correct that the government (meaning all the people) owe to each of us the access to opportunity and the presence of a safety net, or believing we're entitled to get and keep as much wealth as possible without owning anything to the commons.

Posted by: Jeany on February 27, 2009 at 1:01 PM | PERMALINK

The GOP is simply beyond parody.

Posted by: Jon on February 27, 2009 at 1:01 PM | PERMALINK

Is it Michael Steele or Michael Scott?

Posted by: Jason on February 27, 2009 at 1:06 PM | PERMALINK

Somebody needs to provide material for Stewart & Colbert!

Seriously though...there is nothing less cool than someone who is not cool trying desperately to become cool.

Posted by: mfw13 on February 27, 2009 at 1:08 PM | PERMALINK

Colbert has a priceless take on the "fo-shizzlization" of the Republican brand - http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/219951/february-26-2009/stephen-challenges-michael-steele

Republicans could give a damn about the economy but they are doing their best to keep comedians fully employed.

Posted by: petorado on February 27, 2009 at 1:11 PM | PERMALINK

Oh God, the Republicans have found a brother willing to shuck and jive for them!

If Steele thinks that attempting to adopt the patois of the street is going to attract people of color to the GOP, he is more clueless than I thought.

Signed,
African-American Democrat

What makes it extra embarrassing is that she said it wrong. She makes the common mistake of confusing Black English Vernaculars use of be as a habitual action marker with Standard English's simple present tense copula "to be". I.e. she should have said, "You da man!" (Which would, of course, also have been inappropriate.)

Does Michael Steele know that 'frigging' means 'masturbating'?

That Jindal is a doing a friggin' awesome job in his state means --well, I couldn't agree more!

Michael Steele proves either that either hysterical self-consciousness knows no ideology, or he's some kind of agent provacatuer.

He's a transcending, transformative moment for Republicans,

he's gonna get jiggy on their asses!

Posted by: alan on February 27, 2009 at 1:38 PM | PERMALINK

Impossible...Mitt Romney has no homies. To know him is to hate him.

Maybe we can get Mike Huckabee to bust a cap in his ass.

Posted by: Mary Contrary on February 27, 2009 at 1:38 PM | PERMALINK

you gotta admit, woody allen as 'reagaham' is pure -- or, as steele would say, friggin' -- genius!

Posted by: neill on February 27, 2009 at 1:38 PM | PERMALINK

It would all be very funny if it wasn't so cringe-inducing. I actually feel embarrassed for them. This is kind of like when Debbie Reynolds tries to act cool. I just wonder how long this will go on before they realize what fools they're making of themselves?

Coming this summer: Michael Steele's Takin' Back the Rainbow Tour.

Poochie: [rapping]

The name's Poochie-D and I rock the telly
I'm half Joe Camel and a third Fonzarelli
I'm the kung-fu hippie from gangsta city
I'm a rappin' surfer, you da fool I pity!

Scratchy: [unenthusiastic] Wow, Poochie is one outrageous dude.
Itchy: [unenthusiastic] He's totally in my face.

Posted by: genome on February 27, 2009 at 1:53 PM | PERMALINK

I think I speak for us all when I say Michael Steele is one outrageous dude.

Too bad he has to return to his home planet.

Posted by: doubtful on February 27, 2009 at 2:06 PM | PERMALINK

Y'know, it could be worse. Bachmann could have said something like, "Oh, Michael. You really are one of the good ones!"

Posted by: Roddy McCorley on February 27, 2009 at 2:50 PM | PERMALINK

Isn't "my bad" the kind of thing you say when you knock over someone's beer or bash their fender in the parking lot, rather than when you, y'know, trash the whole country and cause half a million plus needless deaths?

Posted by: paul on February 27, 2009 at 3:20 PM | PERMALINK

This is all Lee Atwater's fault, y'know.

Rock on, Michael. Rock on, Michele.

I'm all for bipartisanship, as long as the other party isn't this group of clowns.

Send 'em the way of the Whigs and lets come up with a different "loyal opposition" party.

Posted by: jalfrezi on February 27, 2009 at 4:19 PM | PERMALINK

they're trying to appeal to blacks and young people in the same way they tried to appeal to working class and rural whites(albeit somewhat more successfully in the latter case)-- by pandering to what they think is the ignorance of those constituencies. Rural white guy: talk guns guns guns, heart walmart, racism, and ignorance. urban black guy: speak in hip hop/ebonics. Sigh.

Don't they get that Obama didn't win because he pandered to blacks? He won for a whole host of other reasons. And partly because he was himself (except for a few half-hearted attempts to slug down some beer and bowl), didn't pander, and treated Americans like we're intelligent.

The republicans still think the people they are targeting are dumb.

And I'm starting to realize it's because THEY are.

If ever they need Mrs. Cleaver to wake in and say "I speak jive"...

aren't these guys a bit old to be imitating high school students?

srsly, the composite image these maroons put in my head is a tap-dance troupe in blackface.

it's like a really bad sitcom that somehow you can't get off your tv, no matter what channel you change it to there they are.

it's like "the truman show" come to life, with the gop as truman burbank.

i never would have believed i would, in the end, be grateful for the switchover to DTV taking the last of what little television i had. grateful i am, indeed.

Please let there be video, please let there be video!

I can't help but recall when Jon Steward said of the 2000 recount: "when we called it "indecision 2000" we were joking, we didn't expect you to run with it!" Its just scary howfast the GOP leadership is embracing lincool.

I assume our heathen agents are spreading news of the GOPs newfound respect for hiphop among the "strong Hillary country" christan fanatics? It's such a shame agent Haggards cover was blown, he would be perfect for resisting the GOPs temptations towards coolness.
