THIS WEEK IN GOD.... First up from the God Machine this week is a major kerfuffle that broke out after Sen. Sam Brownback (R) of Kansas, who converted to Roman Catholicism while serving in Congress, questioned the religious commitment of prominent Catholic Democrats.
It started with a fundraising letter on the Freedom of Choice Act, printed on an official-looking letterhead that reads "United States Senator Sam Brownback (Republican-Kansas)," and featuring Brownback's signature.
"Real Catholics need a new voice -- not the likes of Ted Kennedy and Nancy Pelosi who have campaigned as Catholics while voting to undermine the values we hold most dear," Brownback wrote in a letter on behalf of Catholic Advocate, a project of the conservative Washington-based Morley Institute for Church and Culture.
"The same can be said for the five 'Catholic' senators sponsoring the Freedom of Choice Act, namely John Kerry (D-MA), Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), Bob Menendez (D-NJ), Patty Murray (D-WA) and Maria Cantwell (D-WA)... You can't be both Catholic and Pro-Abortion!" [scare quotes and emphasis in the original]
For a prominent Catholic lawmaker to question his Catholic colleagues' faith, in writing, was understandably seen as both insulting and offensive. "This is an astonishing breach of the basic norms of civility long honored in the United States Senate," said Stephen Schneck, professor of political science and director of The Catholic University of America's Life Cycle Institute. "Regardless that FOCA is horrible and -- for me -- immoral legislation, an affront like this between senators is unfathomable."
Initially, Brownback's spokesperson claimed that the senator's office "had never seen, heard of, or approved" the letter. Then Brownback's office changed its story, saying that the letter had been approved by an unnamed, since-departed campaign aide. Then the story took another turn when the group that sent out the letter said the screed had been "sanctioned by Brownback."
The heat on Brownback is increasing, and I doubt we've heard the last of it.
Also from the God Machine this week:
* The Vatican's decision to elevate Timothy Dolan as New York's new Archbishop may have a much broader significance.
* The White House really shouldn't be in the business of "vetting" prayers before presidential events.
* It's not too late to book your trip on the Creation Studies Institute's "Ice Age Fossil Adventure."

Christian infighting has the same effect on the cockles of my heart as does GOP infighting: warmth.

So carpetbagger Catholic Brownshirt is now taking liberties that even the Pope doesn't take! Ha! The real fake Catholic in this exchange is the one who never got smacked by a ruler, served a mass or summoned the Holy Spirit.

Can't wait to see the second letter, which says "You can't be both Catholic and support the Iraq War!" and "You can't be both Catholic and support the death penalty!"

The Catholic Church wrote a compelling, detailed encyclical against the Iraq War. I'm sure once Brownback deals with his "unnamed, departed" aide, he can find time to read it. Then he can examine the Church's stance on execution and poverty eradication. He'll be a busy guy.

Apparently you can be a Catholic and lie like a rug.
Alex, don't hold your breath.

There's a reason us cradle Catholics aren't too fond of the converts, who love to run around telling us we're doing it wrong.
Can't wait to see the second letter, which says "You can't be both Catholic and support the Iraq War!" and "You can't be both Catholic and support the death penalty!"
I've noticed that much of the public sneering about "cafeteria Catholics" has melted away since the Iraq War starts. I still love to point out that any Catholic who supports the Iraq War -- a war that has been denounced by two Popes -- is just as much a cafeteria Catholic as I am by being pro-choice. That's going to be fun for years to come.

"Christian infighting has the same effect on the cockles of my heart as does GOP infighting: warmth."
If you love Christian infighting, how about the story of the San Thome Basilica in Chennai, India? The Apostle Thomas was killed and possibly buried there about 1900 years ago. The Christian sect he founded naturally built a chapel on top of his grave. When the Portuguese arrived, they tore down the chapel, built a Catholic church, and forcibly converted the St Thomas Christians to Catholicism. Then the British came, tore down the Catholic church, built an Anglican church, and then tried to convert the locals to Anglican belief. When the British left, the church went back to Catholicism, but many of the members are St Thomas Christians. During the process, the Catholic Church has gone from denying that St Thomas ever went to India to now saying that St Thomas was always a Catholic, and he really is buried down there. Now if they could only find those bones....

Everyone knows that the only real Catholics are Republican Catholics.

The Church has been a vocal proponent of workers' rights pretty much since, well, ever. John Paul II, for instance, enthusiastically supported Lech Walesa, possibly the most famous union leader in history, not only for the anti-communist stance of his countryman but for his pro-labor leadership. Why on earth would Brownback think it's antithetical for a Catholic to support FOCA? Oops, I see the problem--I put "Brownback" and "think" in the same sentence, without a "doesn't" in between.

A very unintelligent thing to do for Brownback! Though the only fear we have to fear is fear itself, the incivility and viciousness of the right is getting pretty close to take precautionary notice! We may find ourselves in need of parrying and deflecting such vitriol.
To bring his religion into the halls of my government, Brownback is being offensive to civil small d democracy. May he find his way in purgatorio! -Kevo

Brownback wants evangelical Kansans to know that, even though he's Catholic, he's still really a christianist (he's also a young-Earth creationist).
He is running for governor, you know.

I was raised Catholic and now consider myself a retired Catholic. My response to Senator Brownback would be Sister Mary Catherine in catechism class taught me a whole different agenda. You know things like - The Sermon on the Mount - the meek shall inherit the earth - Christ is the Lord of Forgiveness and Mercy. She never talked about that self righteous bullshit your spewing.

"The Sermon on the Mount"
I'm not a Christian, but I do read the Bible. And I also read pretty much every other religious text as well. The Sermon on the Mount is the best passage I've ever read from any text. Perhaps Mr Brownback should read it.

"He is running for governor, you know."
That's great news. We'll get him out of the Senate, and he could lose the Governor's race, too. That would be sweet!

I'm not liking this "prayers before presidential events" thing. (I'm not atheist or agnostic.)
What ever happened to the old "moment of silence"?

Ick, I cringed as soon as I read the phrase "Real Catholics."

Why in hell is an invocation necessary at all at a public presidential event?

too bad the FOCA has not had any action on it since APRIL 20007, and it never made it out of the Judiciary Committee, and it never will. But the GOP is all about myths and lies to spread it's message.

My suspicion is that the approval came from some overzealous staffer, but it sure would be nice to get some clarification from Brownback. I think he owes an explanation to the Catholic Dems he slurred, and he definitely needs to correct the record publicly because so many people got this mailer.

First, vetting prayers for any mention of Jesus is a step in the right direction towards inclusion.
Acknowledge Yahweh/Allah only. Christians worship Him too so all three major faiths are treated equally.
Maybe we can get the Christians to agree with everybody else that no prayer at all is better than one that doesn't explicitly mention Jesus.
Second... for the record, the red Chinese are pro-abortion. Pro-choice people unanimously don't mind women having their babies at all.

Remember the "Seinfeld" episode where Jerry's dentist converts to Judaism just for the jokes?
Mind-reading -- it's a shortcut to the truth!
1)"Real Catholics" HOW CAN YOU SPOT THEM? Mind-reading!
2)"need a new voice" - HOW CAN YOU KNOW WHAT OTHER PEOPLE NEED? Mind-reading!
3)"Ted Kennedy and Nancy Pelosi who have campaigned as Catholics" - HOW CAN YOU KNOW WHAT THEY BELIEVE? Mind-reading!
4) "while voting to undermine" - HOW CAN YOU FIND OUT WHAT OTHER PEOPLE'S SECRET MOTIVES ARE? Mind-reading!
5)"the values we hold most dear," HOW CAN OTHER PEOPLE TELL WHAT VALUES YOU HOLD MOST DEAR? - That's right!

toowearyforoutrage: "... the red Chinese are pro-abortion. Pro-choice people unanimously don't mind women having their babies at all."
I am both pro-abortion and pro-choice.
Given current circumstances with regard to the massively destructive, catastrophic impacts of the human species on the Earth's biosphere, we humans should not be reproducing. We should be doing everything possible to reduce the human population of the planet, as quickly as possible, and as humanely as possible.
In short, in my view, both men and women should be choosing not to have children, for the sake of the well-being of all life on Earth, now and for millennia to come. (I have no children and had a vasectomy 15 years ago.)
Obviously those who disagree will do as they will, and have children if they so desire.
But if a woman becomes pregnant in circumstances where she doesn't want a child, I personally would encourage her to have an abortion. There are plenty of -- too many -- planned, wanted children being born already. We sure don't need to add any unplanned, unwanted children to their numbers. That makes me pro-abortion.
At the same time, I believe the decision as to whether or not to have an abortion should absolutely be the sole choice of the pregnant woman. It is absolutely not a matter for the government. That makes me pro-choice.
