KEEP ON TALKING, RUSH.... When Americans United for Change and AFSCME unveiled its new television ad this week, the groups not only went after congressional Republicans as the "party of 'no,'" they also emphasized an even more potent message: the GOP is beholden to Rush Limbaugh.

As Greg Sargent reported yesterday, we can expect to hear a lot more of this.

Top Democratic operatives are planning a stepped up campaign to promote Rush Limbaugh as the public face of the GOP -- an effort that will include recruiting Dem governors to make this case on talk shows, getting elected officials to pen Op eds arguing it, and running more ads pushing it, a senior Democratic operative says.

Key leadership staff in the House and Senate, and in all the political committees, have been encouraged by senior Dem operatives to push this message wherever possible, the operative says.

Paul Begala told Greg, "I'm encouraging every Democrat, every progressive, to be pointing out this powerful but painful truth: The party of Lincoln is now the Party of Limbaugh," Begala continued. "We should make every Republican answer this: Why do they want our president to fail?"

It's a strategy with all kinds of appeal. Limbaugh is not exactly a respected public figure (drug-addled shock-jock who's actively rooting for America's decline), but Republicans continue to hold him in high regard. With that in mind, Democrats and Limbaugh, oddly enough, have the same goal: convince the general public that he's the ostensible head of the Republican Party.

It's ironic, in a way, that every time Limbaugh makes another disgusting comment -- which happens with some regularity -- Democrats grit their teeth and quietly thank the host for making their job easier.

Like hunting fish in a barrel. The dems egg on limbaugh, he'll only get more worked up, say more awful things, and on and on.

GOP completely overestimates Limbaugh's popularity among anyone who isn't a dittohead. It's only a matter of time before the GOP will be forced to dis Limbaugh for saying something indefensible, which will inly serve to splinter and divide them further.

Pass the popcorn!

If one listens very carefully to el Blimpo (an unpleasant task, but someone's got to do it), one can detect his tongue firmly planted in his cheek.

Apparently this is too subtle for his Dittoheads.

As is the sound of him laughing all the way to the bank. . .

limbaugh leads republicans on the attack...

but they don't appear to care what happens next..

do they win elections?

do they win the public conversation on issues?

do they get bills passed?

are polls leaning their way?

the only winner in this dichotomy...

is..

limbaugh's salary...

its never been higher

Great ad. Like lemmings over the cliff. Now, if we can just go after those torturers...

The funny thing is that most repubs I know physically cringe at the mention of Rush. Why their politicians don't do the same is mystifying.

Posted by: JoeW on February 28, 2009 at 10:23 AM | PERMALINK

Limbaugh, Colter, etc. are frauds. their flim-flam men out to make a buck. there's no ideology there. The problem the Republican Party has it that it put all of its stock in the baskets of entertainers. Now they're forced to follow the lead of self-promoting clowns. That means only the most extreme and idiotic of the GOP can thrive. Look no further than what's happening now. Palin, Jindal, Huckabee...the faces of the GOP.

Limbaugh is a flashpoint, but the Democrats should broaden out to emphasize that the Republicans are beholden to a toxic band of bad vaudevillians. They;re no longer a serious political party...they've become entertainment.

Atta boy Rush!

It's long past time to frame Limbaugh as the heart and black soul of the Republican party. It will force the Republicans to either own him or discredit him.

"Limbaugh is not exactly a respected public figure"

Has it not been the rethug mantra that "it is not necessary to be respected - it is necessary to be feared!"

Convince me that rethug pols in general are not in fear of the RushBo! That will work just fine for the fat drug addict...

To this: (drug-addled shock-jock who's actively rooting for America's decline) I would add sex tourist, or child abuser, or something along the lines that his wiener don't work.

I wonder if this means that national Democrats are finally starting to get a clue.

Starting with Nixon, the GOP has ridden hostility to the media to victory after victory, and has created the enduring myth of oppression by the "liberal media" as a key element of this hostility. Until very recently national Democrats have seemingly been unable to grasp the fact that today's broadcast media is, with few notable exceptions, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Republican Party and its far-right supporters, and as such are legitimate targets for political attack and criticism.

Limbaugh is an easy target, and tying him like an anchor around the neck of the GOP is a good start. It will certainly outrage the dittoheads, but those ignorant goobers will never support Democrats anyhow. I just hope that this is not a flash-in-the-pan effort, but the beginning of a sustained strategy that is directed at all of the media wingnuts out there, not just Limbaugh.

Yes. Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes!

It's long past time for Democrats to point out that the Republican base is far, far, far, far, far to the right of the American center.

As poor Michelle Malkin appeared on C-Span, this morning, to complain, "What am I, chopped liver?"

I'd love to see her appear on a Sunday morning talk show, play out that line, and have someone reply that "Malkin makes chopped liver look like filet mignon."

I'm not so sure Republicans hold Limbaugh in high regard. I think they're a little scared of him, at least worried. What I enjoy seeing is members of the right turning on each other. Nat Review writer John Derbyshire actually goes after Rush and Sean in the latest "American Conservative" and he does it pretty effectively. Nice read. Now we can look forward to watching the Republican party, which gets louder as it gets weaker, react to a campaign saddling them with Limbaugh. Two cheers! Next, let's make sure they also get saddled with the costs of the Iraq war and the bank bailout(s).

Let's just hope that, in their mad Rush-to-Limbo, the Repubs never pause to take stock of reality, check the terrain and adjust their course accordingly. But, judging from the snippets I've seen coming out from the CPAC gathering, it's unlikely that they will.

I propose that the Republcan Party henceforth be referred to as the Rushian Party and Republicans be called Rushians.

Posted by: Steve on February 28, 2009 at 2:55 PM | PERMALINK

It's a good idea for the Democrats to focus on Rush Limbaugh. But the problem for the Republicans is deeper.

It's not just Rush Limbaugh. It's the scripts that Rush Limbaugh reads on the air. Which are the same scripts that Sean Hannity reads on the air. Which are the same scripts that the editorial board of The Wall Street Journal reads, and then prints in their op-ed pages.

Which are the same scripts that Republican politicians read, and regurgitate on the talk shows -- where the so-called "mainstream" corporate media's vapid "on-air personalities" have read the same scripts and know what questions to ask to set up the scripted talking-point responses.

They are all reading from the same fake, phony, trumped-up, corporate-sponsored, focus-group-tested, teleprompted, pseudo-ideological, so-called "conservative" script.

The reason the Republicans won't go against Rush Limbaugh is that they really have nothing else to say, except the same scripted talking points that Rush Limbaugh reads on the radio.

Take away their script, and they would have nothing to say to the American people but the truth: that they want to use the power of government for corrupt purposes of private financial gain for themselves and their ultra-rich, white-collar corporate crook cronies and financial backers, at the expense of the American people.

That's what the Republican Party and "conservatism" represent in America today: government as an organized crime enterprise.

It elevates Rush, but it degrades the party as a whole. I can see eventually it leading to an actual Republican party break up and a new party arising from it, which is what I wanted all along.

The GOP needs to be buried and a new party must take the place of it. Alternately what might happen is that the Democratic coalition grows so large they eventually become the Republicans and a new left party appears to be the left party. This might happen if Obama really does shift national consciousness to the left. In this scenario the GOP becomes a fringe party.

The shorter the message the stronger the meme. Rush Limbaugher should be referred to at every possible opportunity as a "drug addict" or "junkie." I prefer "fat junkie." Laugh before and after saying it. But say it, again and again and again. Nothing less than the future of our country demands it. No playing fair with this lying traitor who calls for the failure of the United States. the disgusting fat junkie.

Rather than the party of no, I see the Republican Party as the Party of Failure. Ever since Eisenhower, they've failed on so many levels.

I find it really hard to believe that anyone with a single ounce of common sense would care what that idiot Limbaugh thinks or says!

Blow what he said out of context a little more you dolt. He wants Obama to fail because he is afraid of what the country will be like if he succeeds. A socialistic free loading big goverment country. Open your fucking eyes people, read a history book. Socialism has never worked, and never will.

Why dont you actually listen in to what he is saying on his radio program instead of taking clips of it from far left sources.

It seems like most of the posters here haven't listened to Limbaugh, they only think they know what he's like from what the drive-by media has told them about him.

If you listen to him, he makes alot of sense.

The sad part about all these conservative talk radio people is that their primary goal is ratings. Ratings as in how to hold on to their job. So the more controversy they came stir up the, the more people will tune in. The really sad part in all is that the conservative listeners are being played like a piano and enjoy it.

Posted by: Warren on March 1, 2009 at 11:44 AM | PERMALINK

Whenever I hear someone say that Limbaugh makes sense I recall that's what Germans said about Hitler and his pals as they reduced the national discourse to slolgans and scapegoats. "Liberals" and "Gays" are the new Jews in this scenario. This is a very sick man who has become the de facto spokesman for an ethically bankrupt political cult who don't realise the stench they complain about is coming from their own necrotic remains.

Posted by: Scott on March 1, 2009 at 11:59 AM | PERMALINK

It's what they don't say that is the key. Flip the thought and think the other side. Then decide.

yes yes we MUST end all this loose talk and begin limiting free speech( oooops I mean hate talk) we need a law to stop people from just saying whatever the hell they want.we only want the correct propaganda(ooops again i mean forward thinking people)reaching the airways. No nazis like limbaugh should be allowed to cash in on his talent for entertainment(ooops again..my bad.. i mean stirring up anti-obama forces)We need to all ignore the fact that nazi germany was the first anti-smoking pro nationalized health care and gun control country in the world as well as the leader in organic food production,anti-church.BUT I want all you kool aid drinkers out there to just keep jackbooting along with obama...why if things get out of hand we may become a republic again...we cannot HAVE THAT

Roger. So you are saying socialism brings facism? Would that be human or corporate socialism?

Posted by: okay on March 1, 2009 at 12:19 PM | PERMALINK

Wow. I love how intelligent the posts are here, but I only wish to comment on one. To Warren, who is obviously one of the liberals who has never taken Econ101 or can analyze information w/o his warped bias blinding his reason. Yes, all talk show hosts do have an incentive to get high ratings, because it gets them higher income (how terrible, making money is bad). But in Econ101 you learn that you can supply something like chocolate tuna lasagna (to quote my teacher) but no one will actually buy it and the business will fail- or the government will bail it out and it will fail later.
However, conservative talk shows are doing very well- like Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck. It is not because of "controversy" being stirred up, but rather because what the are saying is actually in accord with the beliefs of the demanders (or consumers) of their good (talking). Also, why are there no good liberal talk shows on AM radio? The same reasoning applies- try to figure it out.
Also I do not think that Rush is the new Abraham Lincoln, but he certainly embodies many of the ideals of our founding fathers. It becomes apparent if you go back and read a book written about those guys and then actively listen with an open mind to Rush. Besides, we should all know the ideology that our country was born upon and understand the reasons for why our founding fathers believed in it (basically that big government is dangerous).

It's unfortunate liberal elite, such as Paul Begala, can't (or won't) use full context of a statement when making such an absurd comment. Hitler propagated such lies and look where that took his country! Americans....Please read the entire context of Limbaugh's comment and decide for yourself. Learn the truth.

Paul Begala, truth is always constant. Truth never changes. You and your liberal friends can say whatever you want. Your liberal press and media giants ABC, CBS, and particularly your friend's company NBC will be found out.

Surely Americans will eventually see through the deception and lies. By the way, now that the Obama administration has stolen the Census and is redistricting the electorate, when do they plan to officially crown the new king? Hile Obama.
