THURSDAY'S CAMPAIGN ROUND-UP....Today's installment of campaign-related news items that wouldn't generate a post of their own, but may be of interest to political observers.

* RNC committeewoman Ada Fisher this morning became the first RNC member to call on Michael Steele to resign as party chairman.

* Former Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio has formed an exploratory committee and appears to be the first top-tier Republican to enter the 2010 Senate race in Florida.

* In Kentucky, Sen. Jim Bunning's (R) approval rating is down to 41%.

* Lake Research Partners, a Democratic polling firm, conducted a survey showing state Attorney General Jerry Brown (D) with an edge in California's upcoming gubernatorial campaign. Mayors Gavin Newsom and Antonio Villaraigosa also did well in the poll, and all three fare well against the likely Republican candidates.

* To the disappointment of the DCCC, Michigan House Speaker Andy Dillon (D) has decided not to take on Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (R-Mich.) next year. Dillon is, however, considering a gubernatorial campaign.

* Club for Growth issued its first endorsement of the 2010 cycle yesterday, announcing its support for Rep. Mary Fallin's (R) gubernatorial campaign in Oklahoma.

* William Daley, the former commerce secretary and brother to Chicago's mayor, is apparently planning a Senate campaign in Illinois next year.

* Sen. Chuck Grassley (R) is dismissing rumors that he might run for governor in Iowa next year.

* And Ned Lamont is thinking about running for governor in Connecticut next year. The incumbent, Gov. M. Jodi Rell (R), has not yet announced whether she plans to seek re-election, but if she does run, she'll be favored to win.

"RNC committeewoman Ada Fisher this morning became the first RNC member to call on Michael Steele to resign as party chairman."

The RNC can save a lot of time and embarrassment by just letting Rush pick the next chairman.

Lake Research Partners, a Democratic polling firm, conducted a survey showing state Attorney General Jerry Brown (D) with an edge in California's upcoming gubernatorial campaign.

Sad. Too many California voters weren't even alive 35 years ago when this s.o.b. was first elected governor and used his powers of office to create the basic conditions that led directly to the financial crisis we in California are dealing with today.

In 1976-78, while the property tax revolt was brewing, then-Governor Brown had the popularity to put through a realistic property tax reform in partnership with Democratic majorities in the Senate and Assembly, who were awaiting his leadership. What was needed was a cap on residential property taxes, while leaving alone commercial property taxes. What we got - as a result of Governor Moonbeam sitting on his mattress on the floor of the gubernatorial apartment chanting "Ommmmmmmm" with the Marin County hippie-dippies - was Proposition 13, which screwed the states finances, didn't really help residential property owners in any rational way, but did help corporate property owners (the only parties who have kept their property over the past 30 years and thus kept the original "reform" tax rate). The result is the financial mess of today, and it is all the fault of this moron.

That people would be crazy enough to let this pile of dog poop return to the scene of the crime could only happen in California.

Proposition 13 is what happens when Republicans are allowed to run amok.

Posted by: impartial on March 5, 2009 at 12:13 PM | PERMALINK

But won't it be fun to hear Schwarzenegger argue that Brown won't get anything done either, since he, too, will have to deal with the Republicans in the legislature?

Don't get into a panic about the Jerry Brown thing just yet-- remember, polls this early on are merely reflections of name recognition. Jerry Brown has held statewide office in California, and ran for President once, so his name is pretty well-known all over the state. I know that many of us here, being the news junkies that we are, can't imagine that people all over California haven't also heard of Antonio Villaraigosa and Gavin Newsom. But the fact is, most people don't keep their fingers on the pulse of the news the way we do, ergo, people outside of the Los Angeles area are not that familiar with Villaraigosa, and those who don't live in the Bay Area haven't heard much about Newsom. As the election draws nearer, people will hear more from both of these mayors, and I predict that one of them, if not both, will pull ahead of Brown in the polls, well in advance of the day of the primary.

Remember, during much of 2003, Joe Lieberman was leading in the polls for the Democratic nomination. Why? Because he was the only one in the bunch whose name had appeared on a national ticket. It's name recognition. That's all.

I recommend, as poorly as this experiment in trying to look tolerent has gone for the R's, that they do exactly the opposite next time.
Kountry Klub Katon Dawson for RNC Chair!

C'mon R's, you know you want to!

They should just make Rush the next Party Chairman---at least until they make him their 2012 nominee, so he can debate Obama from his little banana-republic bunker at "Excellence In Bullshittery" headquarters....

Posted by: Steve W. on March 5, 2009 at 12:24 PM | PERMALINK

I second Steve's nomination of Rush as RNC chairman. If Rush won't do it, there are some other names deserving serious consideration:

• Erik Erikson of Redstate
• Ann Coulter
• William Kristol
• Karl Rove
• Kathryn Lopez of NR
• Hugh Hewitt
• Sean Hannity
• Steve Doucy
• Neil Cavuto
• Glenn Beck
• Bill O'Reilly
• Michael Medved
• James Dobson (he's got time now!)

Any of these inestimable people would not only immediately solidify the support of the GOP in corporate media boardrooms but would also extend its reach to mental health institutions, state prisons, rural religious compounds, and ponzi scheme boiler rooms.

Ugh. NO DALEYS.

I almost think I'd rather have Burris get re-elected in 2010 than have a Daley in the Senate.

hey, bluestatedon, you left the most promising one off the list -- the 13-yr-old who spoke at cpac.

this is my take on what's happening: http://fromlaurelstreet.wordpress.com/2009/03/05/second-childhood/

'...people all over California haven't also heard of Antonio Villaraigosa and Gavin Newsom...'

Thankfully !
Gavin Newsome is a playboy who was bonking his best friend's wife (among others)
He later put her on city disability so she could figure out why she was shagging such a louse

Newsome refused to turn in crack dealing illegal immigrants to the Feds
All to buy the Latino vote
A couple of the illegals ended up killing innocent victims
Newsome has done NOTHING for SF
His obnoxious 'Whether you like it or not' video probably put Prop 8 over the top
Can you say 'opportunist' ?

As for the 'elephant' in the room, Dianne Feinstein is WORSE !!
She spent the last 8 years 'going steady' with George Bush, voting for:
The Iraq War
the Patriot Act
Tax Cuts for the rich
Judge Alito
Judge Roberts
NAFTA
WTO
De-Regulation

I'd rather have Blagoyevich than either of those clowns

My memories of Jerry Brown are somewhat fonder than some of the above posters

Posted by: MSierra, SF on March 5, 2009 at 1:03 PM | PERMALINK

MFSierra, you didn't mention anything about Villaraigosa. What is your impression of him?

(By the way, the fact that you didn't mention Villaraigosa lends credence to my name recognition argument-- you are in SF, therefore, you know all about Newsom, but you did not comment on the Los Angeles mayor. Likewise, your neighbors to the south can probably spout off many points about Villaraigosa, but don't have much to say about Newsom at this point. And, sure, maybe all the candidates are sub-par, as you say. But, as I see it, Meg Whitman would be a LOT worse!)

Posted by: The Caped Composer on March 5, 2009 at 1:28 PM | PERMALINK

I'm curious about Villaraigosa, too. LA peeps, what say you?

Downstate (defined as anything outside of Cook County) that thought is about 1000% stronger. Daley can run, but I don't think he'll win the primary.

Posted by: Lifelong Dem on March 5, 2009 at 2:31 PM | PERMALINK

Bill Daley, one of the prime hedgers and fumblers who cost us the 2000 election and plunged us into eight years of misery. Yeah, the Dems need more like him -- if they want to travel backward.

Talk of Grassley running against Chet Culver for Iowa's governorship just demonstrates how impoverished the candidate pool is. More likely is that Culver will leave the governor contest to Lieutenant Governor Patty Judge, making her the first woman to serve in a top government post in Iowa (only Mississippi has such a miserable record) and run for the Senate against Grassley, who defeated his father, John Culver, in 1984.

I'm not a Californian, only visited a few times, but Jerry Brown's current actions on the Prop 8 arguments before the CA Supreme Court would probably sway my vote in his favor.

Jerry Brown tears down Prop 8

Of note:

But after further consideration, Brown reached the conclusion that he could indeed oppose Prop 8. He found that, like NCLR is arguing, the changes the proposition represented were a major revision to the state Constitution, rather than just an amendment. Now he’s planning on participating in the case, arguing in opposition to the law in court. It’s a surprising place for an Attorney General to find himself, but also a groundbreaking one.

Also interesting about Brown’s argument is that he never loses site of what this fight is really about. In a piece he posted yesterday on Daily Kos, Brown argues that the decision faced by the CA Supreme Court is simple:

“The case touches the heart of our democracy and poses a profound question: can a bare majority of voters strip away an inalienable right through the initiative process? If so, what possible meaning does the word inalienable have?”

Posted by: Michael W on March 5, 2009 at 3:08 PM | PERMALINK

i think it overwhelmingly likely that both Culver and Grassley stay right where they are through their next elections. the bigger question is whether King or Latham, whose districts are likely to be largely combined when Iowa loses a seat, runs against Culver.

Posted by: zeitgeist on March 5, 2009 at 3:13 PM | PERMALINK

John Garamendi, the current (Dem) lieutenant governor, is also running for governor of California in 2010. Smart guy, lots of experience, not someone who should be overlooked.

As for Feinstein's partial list of outrages, let's not forget her strenuous efforts to halt the epidemic of flag burning.
