THURSDAY'S MINI-REPORT.... Today's edition of quick hits:
* Yesterday's rally on Wall Street didn't last long.
* G.M. is in big trouble.
* The California Supreme Court is considering whether the right to marry can be taken away by a popular vote.
* Secretary of State Hillary Clinton invites Iran to participate in regional talks about Afghanistan's future.
* I heard a rumor that Sanjay Gupta is withdrawing from consideration for the Surgeon General position. No confirmation yet.
* Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner seems ready to trade away some of the caps on itemized deductions.
* Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) is worried about Chas Freeman's role as head of the National Intelligence Council.
* Like President Obama, Vice President Biden supports EFCA.
* Sen. Ted Kennedy may be ailing, but he told attendees at the White House health care summit today, "I commit... to be a foot-soldier in this undertaking."
* The White House is getting its first Chief Information Officer.
* Harvard economist Robert Barro has been trying to quantify the odds of a depression. He puts the likelihood at 20%.
* In the meantime, the Fed's "beige book" shows a whole lot of pain.
* I'm kind of worried about Rep. Michele Bachmann's (R-Minn.) mental stability.
* No, really, Bachmann's mad as a hatter.
* Sometimes I get the impression that the Republican Party literally writes the on-air script for Fox News' on-air personalities.
* Now would be a very good time to crack down on voter caging.
* Let's not take that "Thelma and Louise" metaphor too far, okay?
* VoteVets is helping go after DADT. Good move.
* And the DNC isn't quite done with Limbaugh yet. The party is now holding a contest, soliciting a "slogan in ten words or less," which will appear on a billboard in Limbaugh's hometown.
Anything to add? Consider this an open thread.

Ken Starr was despicable today. (As opposed to any other day?) If he's going to try to forcibly divorce and ruin the lives of 36,000 married people and their children, it would be slightly more professional if he could manage it without looking like a smug little prick.
Teach your children well. Playground bullies grow up and become Republican attack dogs.

Don't worry about Bachman. Worry about the crazies who listen to her. Worry for Obama. Worry for the shift back from quasi-fascism. This shift, still in its infancy, requires Obama to give it legs. It needs more powerful voices. It needs for the MSM, if it has any conscience at all, to repeatedly denounce her kind of dangerous talk.

Limbaugh speaks for Wall Street. You live on Main Street.

Oh God. The Dems REALLY need to just drop this whole Limbaugh thing. No doubt he'll keep running his mouth, but at this point, the proper response to anything he does or any questions a reporter might ask about it is a combination wry eyebrow lift and chuckle. That's it.
The Dems are starting to act and gloat like wingnutters. Not a good sign, and making me miss Howard Dean's leadership at the DNC ever more and more. Thanks so much for the sour persimmons Cousin Rahm!

Say no to Obama when he says no to single payer (Medicare for all) health care program. Don't like the way Canada does it--no private doctors--try it the way France does it--both public and private.
Fact is single payer is cheaper and better than the next leading brand. And 4 0ut of 5 doctors prefer it!
Get some today.

A 4 paragraph argument for GM's death...
NYTimes, 2/26/09:
In its filing to the Treasury Department last week, when it asked for $12 billion more in assistance, G.M. said its cars would average 33.7 miles per gallon in 2012. That is a decline of 3.6 miles from its first filing, in early December.
Its estimate for the fuel economy of its light trucks also went down. G.M. said it would average 23.8 m.p.g. in the Feb. 17 filing for its trucks, S.U.V.’s and minivans, compared with an estimate of 27.5 in December.
Given that G.M. is trying to impress the Obama administration with its turnaround plan, it would seem an odd move, since the president has often repeated his goal of improving the fuel economy of cars on American roads.
G.M. said the reasons were twofold. It changed the way it calculated the numbers, and it also wanted to account for a possible tilt toward sales of bigger vehicles if gas prices remained at current levels in coming years.
Shit on that company!
Management ought to be tied to a rope and dragged behind a Hummer until all the meat is gone.
Die dogs...

I truly think that universal healthcare is the #1 issue of the day: without a healthy populace, we are susceptible to every kind of "attack" on our nation, on our culture, on our security, on our economy. As someone said recently (I've forgotten the name; it may have been Rachel Maddow on Leno), these are all linked and we cannot solve any one singularly. That is the failing of the Republicans and the status quo, as represented by the media.
Until we recognize that we are all one and every action/inaction and decision impacts the global community and environment, we will not emerge from this condition in which we find ourselves. To get a little metaphysical for a moment, without the emergence of the Divine Feminine energy, which is in all of us, not just women, we will continue to kill and maim and destroy from within. Our enemies are not across the water or hiding in terrorist cells; they are our ignorance and denial of what we have created. As Einstein stated many decades ago(paraphrase): "You cannot solve the problems of today from the same level of consciousness that created them."
The insanity that is emerging as Republican obstructionism is a display of our race consciousness; it is up to us...we are the ones...to look within and clear our own minds of outmoded beliefs...and the time is NOW!

Mikey likes it too...
So what can we replace it with? How do you sum up an intellectual stance that has a pre-conceived position that is unyielding to the most compelling evidence; ignores mounting and alarming data from numerous scientific fields backing up the opposing position; and clutches at the most ephemeral of straws that can be twisted to support its arguments? How to capture the sheer head-in-the-sand-fingers-in-the-ears bloody mindedness?

I don't know where this would fit in, but ...
If I were a Republican, I would be really annoyed. Do they really want to be the '"no-to-everything"-"tax cuts-only"-"America-going-to-hell" Party? As a strong Democrat, I don't want only one party, but if this is it, I can understand independents and "sane" Republicans turning away.
I think their often mentioned leader Reagan was about "Morning in America" and how proud he was to be an American that got respect from everyone. Then with his great communicative style, the GOP could spend like crazy, increase taxes, and sweet talk the American people that he was doing right by them - even with major scandals and secret goverment activities.
I think this "persuasiveness" tactic is no longer the meme - only fear, commies and the Obama bogeyman - that is turning everyone off.
Until they use they're brains and offer solutions to a "better" America, this may be the time to offer a "New" party.
Oh, and Rush - maybe the GOP shouldn't care so much about his audience - would his audience EVER turn to the Democrats??? - the GOP is the only choice they have.

Does anyone watching cable television notice how beautiful, airy and warm the presentation
of the White House looks on MSNBC's David Shuster's show "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue" since
George W. Bush vacated?
When David Gregory had that show, the background of the White House had a red and a rather menacing look to it?
Just sayin'

Clarification. I said 'It needs for the MSM, if it has any conscience at all, to repeatedly denounce her kind of dangerous talk.'
Unless something absolutely illegal is said, the news divisions had best ignore it or play it w/o comment. Otherwise, their actions may feed the delusions. So called main stream liberal commentators on Sunday morning should speak out, however.

Rush Limbaugh is such a dope.
Un-include him in the discussion.
Rahm Emanuel was precient in providing the Sunday discussion, and I appreciated it.
All subsequent engagement is disparaging.
Republicans have a losing proposition with this druggie fanatic.

The California Supreme Court is considering whether the right to marry can be taken away by a popular vote.
No, its not. Its considering whether doing so is, under the California Constitution, an amendment which can be proposed by a public initiative or a revision which must be proposed by the legislature or a Constitutional convention. It is beyond dispute that any right granted by the California Constitution can be taken away by a public vote, since the entirety of the California Constitution (including, inter alia, the right to marry without regard to gender) is subject to change via revision, and much of it via amendment, which, while they differ in how they may be proposed, both are made effective by a simple majority vote.

speaking of gay marriage, vermont legislative leaders announced today that they intend to put their gay marriage bill on the fast track and expect it to pass fairly easily since democrats control both houses. republican governor douglas isn't in support of it, but he also recognizes that it is not an issue that would survive his veto, and it is expected that he will let it become law without his signature.
vermont, who was the leader in this fight by being the first state to approve of civil unions, is now poised to take the next step.
this train has already left the station. and other states can either get on board now, or they will eventually be forced to do the right thing. the time has come.
i am proud to be a vermonter.

I heard the "____ amount wealth has been destroyed" cliché and fallacy this evening on NBC news. Consider: the price of X (like a stock) has gone down since whenever. OK, now so and so gets less for it by selling it than before, but the buyer pays the exact same amount less to have it - that's no change in "wealth". Changes in prices of things do not and cannot destroy wealth. Real destruction of wealth is when buildings burn down, cars crash, war destroys things, and (in effect, but not counted that way) when Albert Einstein died, etc.
Posted by: Neil B ◙ on March 5, 2009 at 8:45 PM | PERMALINK
Neil, first of all you shouldn't be watching NBC. It's owned by GE, and, well, you know. Anyway, as far as 'destruction' of wealth, that's not a fair way to describe what happened, that's what they want you to think. What has happened has been a TRANSFER of wealth. And this was by design. Just follow the money.
We're in a class war -- a cold class war right now actually. That's what this is all about. Will the middle class prevail? I hope so.

Limbaugh doesn't deserve serious consideration. Getting outraged just feeds his idiocy. I think the appropriate response to that guy should be this:
It is better to be silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.

Vis Gupta: he also says he wants to stay on as a TeeVee personality. I guess it pays better than Obama and with fewer responsibilities (more time to sped with the family).
And speaking about responsibilities (and silly MSM)... NYT had a *front page* article today, abut Obama's hair going gray. Really... I can understand it being in the Style section, maybe; there are enough people who love that kind of "human interest" stories (myself among them). But, *front page* of the A section (news)???

I tried to go to www.democrats.org to add my two cents on the Rush Limbaugh epitaph contest. The site entered an infinite reload loop and then crashed my connection. Typical Democratic clusterfuck operation. Anyway, here's my not-too-original contribution:
Rush Limbaugh: The Mouth Rises Again
As for background, I'm thinking either the Confederate flag, the hammer-and-sickle flag of the old Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, or the Nazi flag (though there may be a copyright issues with the Jewmans as they continue to co-opt the latter in their 75 year quest to revive the old glory days of Canaanite genocide against latter-day Palestinians).
