KEEP ON TALKING, RUSH.... Ted Kennedy has long been a popular target for conservatives' ire, but since the Massachusetts senator was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor, and suffered a seizure on Inauguration Day, Republican attacks "have basically ceased."

Rush Limbaugh didn't get the memo.

Rush Limbaugh carved a new notch in his ever-expanding belt of tastelessness when he predicted Sen. Ted Kennedy would be 6 feet under by the time Congress passed health care reform.

"Before it's all over, it'll be called the Ted Kennedy memorial health care bill," the conservative radio host sneered on his show yesterday. [...]

Brian Wolff, executive director of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee denounced the remark as "reprehensible."

Media Matters has the audio.

What did Republicans have to say about their buddy joking about Kennedy's death? Not much -- the RNC and the party's congressional leadership didn't want to comment. Imagine that.

The DCCC's Wolff added, "Leader Limbaugh crossed the line. National Republicans must stand up to their leader, Rush Limbaugh, and tell him that enough is enough."

As is often the case, especially lately, the more Limbaugh talks, the better it is for Democrats.

This is a total gift for Democrats. Now there will be a huge push to get the bill passed before Ted passes. Lets watch CNN do a split screen of the GOP filibuster in Congress and a readout of Ted Kennedy's life signs.

"Leader Limbaugh" - a deliberate memeing by Democrats and a good one. REM that insensitive brutishness and contempt for "niceness" is a hallmark of rightwing schtick. Note for example this gem: http://www.fivefeetoffury.com/:entry:fivefeet-2009-03-06-0005/.

The ReRushlickin' Party is being defined "better" and better every day. More cowbell and more popcorn!

One easy way to tell who the next Republican leader will be: when he tells Limbaugh to shut the hell up, Limbaugh will shut the hell up

"Leader" - Fine, but, perhaps there are better choices in the German language.

What next, suggesting our President attend Ford Theater?

Hey, Rush's comment is crude and tasteless, but I can think of no better memorial to Senator Kennedy than an Act providing Universal Health Care. I think we should embrace his suggestion. In fact, I think we should call it KennedyCare, so that every American gets a daily reminder of which party looks out for their interests. Further, I would even make sure that every program that provides solid benefits to the poor, to working families and to the Middle Class includes the name "Democrat" somewhere in its title.

So Republicans are starting to get political heat from the leaders of their "base".

It's about time. I'm sick of how the media pounce every time a Democrat or liberal crosses some imaginary line, but let the right-wing noise machine go under the radar screen.

We need to start labeling them "the Rushpublican Party."

Posted by: Steve W. on March 7, 2009 at 8:16 AM | PERMALINK

Would it be gloating to point out that Limbaugh now is no worse than he ever was? Would newly abhorrent Republicans get the point anyway? Would their tender sensibilities be offended if they did? Should we care? Would we dare?

When Obama removes the prohibition against stem-cell research here's hoping that video resurfaces of Limbaugh mocking Michael J. Fox's Parkinson's disease while mimicking its symptoms like bloated ape. Good times.

Great line from the Op-Ed page of the NYT - Charles Blow, perhaps, coined the phrase, when he tied in Rush-Jindal-Steele, as the "Axis of Drivel".

Though he'd never admit it, Rush Limbaugh is so blessed to be a citizen of this nation where he is free to be as tasteless as he chooses - and let all who bother to pay attention know through his big fat mouth, and grotesquely prurient intellect! -Kevo

Notice how he said it on Friday? Now, we'll all have to tune in on Monday to how he responds.
His primary job is to sell his radio show, and DAMN he's good at it!

Posted by: johndri on March 7, 2009 at 9:16 AM | PERMALINK

Come Monday, Limbaugh will be saying that the outrage being expressed is just political correctness. Yes it is. That same political correctness that keeps progressive talkers and bloggers from scoring cheap political points at Barbara Bush's expense this week.

The ReRushlickins' made a Faustian bargain when they hitched to El Rushblow's wagon for political gain. Considering how dishonest he is and such a tool while pretending to "enlighten", we can call it a Fauxian bargain. BTW, it's hard to find someone as bad as Rush but throw in Hannity (always fishing for a "you're a great American" nibble) and Mike Savage, and you've got the Axis of Ego.

I hope I don't just live in my left wing echo chamber, but maybe this will wake up the vast middle of this country to the fact that the left is not the angry side of this country. Let's see -- a couple of tasteless comments on dailykos, v. Leader Limbaugh on a daily basis.... hmmm.....

Posted by: Alex on March 7, 2009 at 9:39 AM | PERMALINK

Three predictions:
1) Rush starts a Kennedy Death Pool on air. He picks July 18 (Chappaquidick 40th anniversary)
2) Rush repeatedly uses the phrase "Sen Ted Kennedy is still dead."
3) Republicans refuse to comment

Strange.... When I lived down South, the rednecks all complained that their young 'uns were being taught "Kennedy history".

I guess Rush was getting upset that he was losing attention to Carville and Begala, so he had to ramp it up to make sure it would be all about him again.

Posted by: Mnemosyne on March 7, 2009 at 12:26 PM | PERMALINK

++ for Tom's suggestion. Rush's tastelessness aside, calling our new healthcare KennedyCare would rock. And I do hope he lives to see that day.

Posted by: lux on March 7, 2009 at 1:11 PM | PERMALINK

For over 20 years Kennedy has been either the chair or ranking committee member on the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pension committee. So tell me folks, how's he done? How's your health care these days? How's your local school doing? How is your local union doing? And is your pension secure? I guess to you folks these areas are all doing great, thanks to Ted. They sure don't seem to be in good shape to me, but maybe I'm missing something.

Sorry, but as far as I can see, the only thing the Kennedys did for the US was to bring us the Vietnam War. What a great success that was. And will KennedyCare be extended to the four million or so Vietnamese currently suffering from birth defects caused by Agent Orange?

Posted by: mike on March 7, 2009 at 2:39 PM | PERMALINK

mike...

Forget the moonshot(s)?

Cuban Missile Crisis?

The Vietnam Waste wasn't solely a Kennedy creation.

Rush goofed.

He'll probably get away with it, for now.

Don't Rush to conclusions about Kennedy.

Posted by: Tom Nicholson on March 7, 2009 at 3:04 PM | PERMALINK

It's only a matter of time before Rush says something that will be totally indefensible and puts the GOP in a very bad place-- defend or critcize?

Aside from the Kennedy comment, yesterday I tuned in for a few minutes and he had a song about Barney Frank sung to ABBA's "Dancing Queen." (He seemed a tongue slip away from calling him Barney Faggot.) Between that and last fall's "Barack the magic negro" he's going to cross the line. Intellectual, my ass. The man is an offensive, bloated egomaniac who is filled with little more than bile against anyone who isn't conservative/GOP. People really don't have the stomach for this kind of crap right now.

As of now the MSM is paying more attention to Rush than usual. The GOP has been properly set up-- they proudly claimed him as one of their own-- this could happen next week or 6 months from now.

So just how is this different from the shinola the Rushatollah spouts daily from his "Excellence in Broadcasting" studio?

This stuff is his stock in trade.

Are you shocked, shocked that El Blimpo is tasteless and crude?
