WHAT'S WRONG WITH CHRISTOPHER HILL?.... President Obama has nominated Christopher Hill to be the next U.S. Ambassador to Iraq, and by all appearances, there's nothing even remotely controversial about the choice. And yet, Republican Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham are raising a fuss.

The problem, apparently, is that McCain and Graham, while acknowledging Hill's extensive diplomatic experience, believe Hill doesn't have a strong enough background in the Middle East. Matt Cooper thinks this is "odd."

McCain and Graham had no problem voting for Hill to be come George W. Bush's Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs even thought his previous experience was overwhelmingly European with one tour in Seoul. In general the country's supported the idea that senior State Department officials can move around the world and not have to prove their credentials each time they're assigned to a new region. McCain and Graham are imposing a new standard that seems odd. It's not wildly irrational to want an Iraq ambassador with Mideast experience but it's a bar that I've never heard Senators ask of any other career diplomat before.

Indeed, George W. Bush chose John Negroponte to serve as the U.S. ambassador to Iraq, based on his lengthy diplomatic career. Negroponte's background in the Middle East, however, was non-existent. McCain and Graham, at the time, not only supported Negroponte's nomination, they never raised any concerns about his relevant experience.

It's almost as if these Republican senators are being deliberately petty and partisan, just to annoy Obama. McCain and Graham? That couldn't be, could it?

For what it's worth, Hill's nomination should be a no-brainer. The White House seems unfazed by Republican sniping, and press secretary Robert Gibbs reiterated the president's strong support for Hill yesterday.

I've read that Zinni was nixed by AIPAC. Could they be related to this latest "expression of concern"?

I suspect McCain and Co. are more interested in someone with a history of diplomatic relations with Big Oil than the Middle East.

"It's almost as if these Republican senators are being deliberately petty and partisan..."

Steve, I appreciate the humor on a Saturday morning.

You must have missed the memo. The objectives of the rethugs is to do everything they can to undercut the Obama administration.

While only a select few will publicly state so, the rethugs want Obama to fail at everything.

Having failed at the economy and having failed at diplomacy and having failed at leadership for the past 28 years of republican presidencies, all that the rethugs have left for policy is "NO".

When Obama signed the recent bill to keep the government afloat he made a point to remind the country of the hypocracy of the Senators who voted against the bill while adding their own pork before the vote and the predictable obstructionist outcry.

I think he should do it at every opportunity.. When he introduces Hill to America he should reiterate the point, but name names.

"Negroponte had no Middle eastern experience and yet some of the same Senators who opposed Hill had no trouble voting in favor of Bush's choice. I wonder if these guys really enjoy being stupid?"

I can dream can't I? I mean isn't this the type of thing Biden could be good at?

[Ah, Egbert, No one missed you when you were not trolling these parts, and won't miss it when I delete your deliberate nonsense.]

Egbert - your comment: "So your feeling is that Christopher Hill should be "appointed" to Iraq ambassador (notice there's no question about whehter appointments are even democratic to begin with)even though the man has no diplomatic experience."

First of all, since you question whether appointments are even democratic, I would suggest you read the U.S. Constitution. Regarding Mr. Hill, their beef is that he doesn't have enough experience in the middle-east, NOT that he doesn't have diplomatic experience. I would suggest you google Hill - or even just look him up on Wikipedia. You obviously need to be educated.

Christopher Hill was one of Rudy Giuliani's foreign policy advisors during his presidential campaign. Since Rudy is one of McCain's Republican buddies, I'm betting that until Obama nominated him, McCain had no problem with him.
McCain just wants to make trouble for Obama. The battles he's picking show what a small man he is.

DUH!

They have already 'announced' this was their tactic...to obstruct at every opportunity.

Will this kind of stupid sniping by McCain finally convince the press corps that he is not and never has been the patron saint of bipartisanship? When hell freezes over.
