THE 'FATWA' PARTY?.... It looks like much of the California Republican Party has given up on moderation altogether. (thanks to reader M.R. for the tip)

The California Republican Party has been pummeled by some tough body blows in recent years -- and results at the ballot box have been just part of the pain.

Now, at a time when the national GOP is trying to find its voice and cultivate new candidates, California GOP activists have begun engaging in a new pastime: issuing "fatwas" to punish state Republican legislators deemed too moderate on tax issues.

This circular firing squad was on display last week at a "Tax Revolt" rally that drew 8,000 people to a Fullerton parking lot.... The raucous California tea party featured such dramatics as the spearing of a likeness of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's head, and the sledge-hammering of a pile of Schwarzenegger dolls, videos and movie memorabilia -- even an action hero lunch box.

The radio hosts' "fatwas" target a handful of moderate GOP legislators who sided with Democrats to end the state budget impasse. Their calls to recall those lawmakers have reverberated throughout the Republican grassroots.

Hmm. In 2003, far-right activists smashed the Dixie Chicks' CDs. In 2009, they've graduated to Schwarzenegger lunch boxes.

Republican consultant Bill Whalen told the AP, "It's becoming the fatwa party."

Far be it for me to give a state Republican Party advice, but this doesn't sound like a recipe for electoral success.

Does this mean that my Arnold action figure lunchbox is worth more now?

Posted by: mikeyes on March 17, 2009 at 3:24 PM | PERMALINK

It couldn't be worth any less.

I don't know whether to laugh or be worried.

Oh quiet, Steve.

Coming soon to GOP Twitters everywhere:

From hell's heart, I stab at thee; for hate's sake, I spit at thee!

The GOP and its supporters become more like terrorists every day. I've long thought the primary reason they were so gung ho to declare the 'war on terra' was to eliminate competition.

Posted by: doubtful on March 17, 2009 at 3:36 PM | PERMALINK

Do they really refer to these screeds as "fatwahs"? What is it with the Republican need to adopt the phrases of their enemies? Not long ago they were saying they needed to be like the Taliban.

Since they are the party of right to carry permits, I'm wondering when the "circular firing squad" goes literal.

Posted by: Capt Kirk on March 17, 2009 at 3:38 PM | PERMALINK

Gee...and here I thought that a "fatwa" was "more along the lines of an angry group of people tearing down someone's hate-radio broadcast towers. 8-})

Posted by: Steve W. on March 17, 2009 at 3:41 PM | PERMALINK

Steve, never interrupt the enemy when he is making a mistake.

Posted by: Steve LaBonne on March 17, 2009 at 3:50 PM | PERMALINK

Not to be repetative but ....

"For whenever the anger of divine spirits harms someone,

"it first does this: it steals away his mind
and good sense, and turns his thought to foolishness,

"so that he should know nothing of his mistakes."

or in other words ...

"Those whom the Gods would destroy they first drive mad."

And the Republicans sure must have made God or the Gods angry. How? I wonder.

Oh it figures the media would spell this wrong! It's really a fat-wad, named for the typical rethuglican profile.

They keep doing the outrageous crap in the hope that one time it will strike a nerve, like freedom fries. They will take the chance of looking like idiots to try and ignite the great 'popular' outrage they want to be out there. If outrage ignites in CA, it will burn up the rethugs first.

Wasn't Fat Wad Limbaugh's high school nickname?

Posted by: Chocolate Thunder on March 17, 2009 at 4:00 PM | PERMALINK

The "Conservatives" in the Illinois GOP seem to hate the moderates more than they hate the Democrats.

How common are these fratricidal wars in state GOP parties?

Posted by: Carl Nyberg on March 17, 2009 at 4:01 PM | PERMALINK

It would seem the Cal repubs have taken Sessions' suggestion to heart. Maybe we should call them the ReTalibans.

As an aside, wasn't it just a few years ago that these very same knuckleheads were talking about ammending the US Constitution to allow the Governator to run for President? It's tough to know what the right believes anymore - it changes so suddenly.

Posted by: JoeW on March 17, 2009 at 4:03 PM | PERMALINK

And on top of this craziness, didn't the head of the NRA say just recently that the "folks with the guns make the rules?" Scary stuff.....

Posted by: Fire Ant on March 17, 2009 at 4:17 PM | PERMALINK

It's an age old problem. People will always disagree with each other about something. And as a result, "you're either with us or against us" will eventually become "you're either with me, or against me".

And someone who was with you, but now isn't, is always hated more, than those who weren't with you to begin with!

Posted by: royalblue_tom on March 17, 2009 at 4:19 PM | PERMALINK

I hate to play the "what if" game, but could you imagine if a Dem had said that? Malkin's head might literally exploded, and Drudge wouldn't be able to find a siren big enough.

Sick of this crap, I really am.

"[The "Tax Revolt" rally that drew 8,000 people to a Fullerton parking lot... was organized by popular conservative talk show hosts John and Ken - John Kobylt and Ken Chiampou of radio station KFI in Los Angeles."

Jon and Ken were *very* active in getting the Gray Davis Recall going, and in getting Arnold elected.

How's that workin' out for you, boys?

Each day brings a new revelation about these 21st century Republicans. To me they risk becoming an extended mixed-metaphor everyone laughs at in the end, then the party will die! The question becomes what faction will replace the Republican party at the national level.

As for now, we need to start a death watch for Republicans and their Sacrosanct Party of NO! -Kevo

And no doubt public employees paid by tax dollars swept up the pummeled mess after they were done? Viva Michelle Malkin!

If the Democrats fail to deliver, people will turn to these freaks no matter how fascist and weird they are. Who else would they have? If things get bad enough, their snake oil will sell as well as any.

Beware of what you wish for.

With the Republican party dead (and deservedly so) and the Democratic party consolidating power through Comprehensive Immigration Corruption and the Jackpot Voter Breeding Program (JVBP por sus siglas en ingles), we end up with corrupt one party rule.

Hah. Hardly. A more progressive party would emerge, like the Green party.

Oh, how I long to live in an America where the Democratic party is the most conservative party, and racist dinosaurs like you are even more irrelevant than you are now.

Posted by: doubtful on March 17, 2009 at 5:54 PM | PERMALINK

the Jackpot Voter Breeding Program

Yeah, send that anchor baby Michelle Malkin back to where she belongs!

I wanna know if it really drew 8K people.

Posted by: Crissa on March 17, 2009 at 6:43 PM | PERMALINK

"It's becoming the fatwa party."

As Capt. Kirk pointed out, they've already compared themselves to the Taliban.

ReTaliban Party it is. Led by the Rushatollah, Ole' FadWad himself.

LOL. You can't make this stuff up!

Posted by: Cal Gal on March 17, 2009 at 7:41 PM | PERMALINK

i wanna know if it really drew 8K people.

i do too. now this is not anywhere close to accurate estimates, but if you watch this youtube of the event, you will probably agree w/me that there was no where near 8,000 people there.

pls. notice the width of space between people. there's plenty of room to walk around in that crowd. if there was 8,000 people there, that spaced out, they would have to occupy 3 or 4 football fields, imo.

i would guesstimate a generous 2,000 people, simply going by my experience in large demonstrations.

i was in the hollywood anti-war demonstration of a couple years back, w/10,000 people, which was jammed packed (not like this video) for about a mile of city streets.

as always, i think the hardly-ever-right wing is spinning their numbers.

Posted by: skippy on March 17, 2009 at 8:25 PM | PERMALINK

yikes! i failed to include the link to the youtube! my apologies:

tax revolt 2009

also pls. note the info on the video sez the "revolt" was held at "the sidebar cafe" in fullerton, cal.

while i have not been there, i can't imagine a "cafe" w/a parking lot big enough to hold 8,000 people.

Posted by: sk on March 17, 2009 at 8:27 PM | PERMALINK

Joe Lieberman would find this all terribly familiar.

Posted by: xx on March 17, 2009 at 9:46 PM | PERMALINK

The California Republican Party has never believed in moderation, and it's worked very well for them.

34% is all they need to hold the state hostage. They still have that, and they have used it to tremendous effect.

The sad fact is these lunch-box hammering idiots have much more say in determining the state budget than average, rational, and sadly a-political Californians do. They may be exercising retarded asshole power, but it's still power, and they're still winning.

Posted by: moot23 on March 18, 2009 at 3:13 AM | PERMALINK

Tax revolt, fatwas? Yep, they're well on the way to Taliban terrortory.

Who do they think will pay for fixing California's roads? AIG?
