Follow-up thought...When Joe Biden warned us last October that, early on in Obama's presidency, there would be "a generated crisis to test the mettle of this guy," people thought immediately of rogues in Iran, Russia or North Korea. Who'd have guessed that the biggest test of mettle would come from rogues only 225 miles up I-95 and through the Holland Tunnel?

The newest addition to the Axis of Evil--->AIG (ah, hell, the whole bunch of banksters and their camp followers). Some of us are not surprised that some terrorism comes clad in expensive pin-striped suits rather than keffiyehs.

AIG is truly the test.
There is so much obvious stench there that your average citizen, whether Democrat or Republican, feels the need for transparency and justice.
And, while the emotional temperature is high, this is not merely a case of irrational populist rage. There are simply too many suspicious facts out there for all to see NOT to get very angry.
What really happened to all those BILLIONS handed out so far?
Who controls the rating agencies?
What deals were made during Bush's tenure and how deeply involved were members of Obama's own team?
The explanation most people will offer is a culture of willful denial and irrational exuberance -- and that might be why the magnitude of the problem is so huge (kind of like NASA culture contributing to shuttle disasters), BUT...
there are humans somewhere, as with Enron, who acted in an unethical, irresponsible and possibly illegal manner.
If not, then the only explanation is that the system itself is so flawed that it needs a reboot. I don't want the government running the "too big to fail" institutions, but overseeing their breakup and restructuring might just be the ticket.
A little regulatory tweaking here and there won't help. You cannot regulate an irrational system into rational behavior -- you can minimize the risk by changing the structure.
Time to bust some trusts.
